Fleet sales mean March new car sales up 11.5 per cent YOY

The car registration data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) for the month of March shows that the UK new car market recorded its first ‘growth’ since August 2020, with 29,280 more units registered during March compared to the same month last year. However, the month represents the anniversary of the first lockdown in March 2020, when the pandemic brought Britain to a standstill and registrations fell by -44.4 per cent.

NFDA Dealer Attitude Survey shows improving satisfaction levels

The National Franchised Dealers Association (NFDA), which represents franchised car and commercial vehicle retailers in the UK, carries out the Dealer Attitude Survey twice a year. The survey has taken place continuously since 1989. With a total of 2,585 responses from 32 participating dealer networks, the survey received a response rate of 59.5 per cent. “It is positive that despite the significant disruption faced by our industry over the past twelve months, dealers are, on average, fairly satisfied with the relationship with their respective manufacturers”, said Sue Robinson, Chief Executive of the National Franchised Dealers Association (NFDA) which represents franchised car and commercial vehicle dealers in the UK, commenting on the results of the NFDA Dealer Attitude Survey winter 2020/2021 published on Monday 15 March 2021.

Optimistic reactions to January car sales figures

Despite the gloomy January figures, there are signs of optimism in the UK car industry. Sue Robinson, Chief Executive of the National Franchised Dealers Association (NFDA), which represents franchised car and commercial vehicle retailers in the UK, said that the steep fall in sales was expected as a result of the January lockdown, but she went on: “Retailers are optimistic about the year ahead, provided that dealerships will be allowed to reopen as soon as it is safe to do so.”

UK LCV market finishes year down -20.0 per cent

Figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) reveal that UK new light commercial vehicle (LCV) registrations ended 2020 down -20.0 per cent, with the van market rounding off the year in decline following three months of growth. 292,657 vehicles were registered in 2020, as the impact of Covid and uncertainty over the future relationship with the EU brought down demand toward the end of the year, with registrations in the final month of the year dropping -1.0 per cent, albeit with volumes consistent with previous Decembers.

Consultation on Motor Vehicle Block Exemption launched: NFDA and AECDR respond

The European Commission has this week launched the public consultation on the Motor Vehicle Block Exemption Regulation (Commission Regulation (EU) No 461/2010). The purpose of the consultation is to assess whether and to what extent the objectives of the Motor Vehicle Block Exemption Regulation (MVBER) are fulfilled. Motor vehicle distribution and after-sales agreements are currently subject to Commission Regulation (EU) No 461/2010 (MVBER).

Electric Vehicle Approved (EVA) scheme reopens for dealers to drive EV uptake

The Electric Vehicle Approved (EVA) accreditation scheme reopens today (12 October 2020). EVA recognises dealers’ expertise in the electric vehicle sector and promotes industry standards for the benefit of the consumer. The scheme encourages dealerships to further develop their ability in selling and servicing electric vehicles, as the country continues to move towards a zero-emission future.

NFDA applauds PM’s ‘skills speech’

The National Franchised Dealers Association (NFDA), which represents franchised car and commercial vehicle retailers in the UK, has welcomed the Prime Minister’s “Skills Speech”, given at Exeter College yesterday. Boris Johnson said: “So I can announce today that we will be expanding apprenticeships, reforming the system so that unspent funds can be used more easily to support apprenticeships not just in big companies, but in the SMEs where there is so much potential for job creation”.

NFDA electric vehicle group debates key EV issues

The National Franchised Dealers Association (NFDA) EV group was established in 2019 to support dealers’ efforts in the EV sector and, in turn, provide NFDA with feedback on the key issues facing the industry that the association can use in support of its lobbying efforts with the relevant Government departments. The launch of the EV Group coincided with the significant growth of the NFDA’s Electric Vehicle Approved (EVA) scheme launched by NFDA and endorsed by the Energy Saving Trust (EST) as well as the Government’s Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) in 2019.

‘Return to form’ for car retailers

July was the first month since the lockdown all dealerships across the UK were able to stay open through the whole month, a fact that is reflected by the uptick in car sales, Sue Robinson, director of the National Franchised Dealers Association (NFDA), said.

NFDA comments on FCA’s Motor Finance Discretionary Commissions ban

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has confirmed it will introduce a ban on motor finance discretionary commission models. The announcement followed a consultation in October 2019. “In the light of consultation feedback and the additional operational pressures which the sector is facing at present the FCA has agreed to give firms limited additional time to implement the new rules, with the ban coming into force on 28 January 2021”, FCA said.

NFDA survey reveals post-lockdown automotive retail

The National Franchised Dealers Association (NFDA), which represents franchised car and commercial vehicle retailers in the UK, has run a survey of dealers of all sizes to understand the implications of the COVID-19 lockdown on the automotive retail sector. The survey asked dealers questions about their return to work including the percentage of dealerships that reopened, current online activity, and levels of customer booking as well as phone enquiries.

NFDA comments on Government’s ‘plan for jobs’

The Chancellor has announced a new £2 billion Kickstart Scheme will be launched to help employers create jobs for young people at risk of long-term unemployment. Funding available for each six-month job placement will cover 100 per cent of the National Minimum Wage for 25 hours a week – and employers will be able to top this wage up.
