The National Franchised Dealers Association has revealed that petrol sales fell 10 per cent in March to a record low of 1.31bn litres. The month followed growth of around four per cent in February, when drivers took advantage of prices 22p per litre lower than the year before.
March 2015 was the best month for car registrations in Britain since twice-yearly number plate changes were introduced in 1999, reports the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders. A total of 492,774 cars were registered last month, 6.0 per cent more than a year earlier. The SMMT says “new products and attractive finance packages, underpinned by low interest rates” helped deliver this record result. Growth was led by the fleet sector, which experienced year-on-year growth of 11.6 per cent. A total of 734,588 new cars were registered in the UK during the first three months of 2015, 6.8 per cent more than in the first quarter of last year.
“It is encouraging to see that the commercial vehicle market continued to grow in February with registrations up 19.5 per cent”, said Sue Robinson, director of the National Franchised Dealers Association. February marked the tenth consecutive month of growth in the CV market – up to 40,491 units. Van demand sustained its upward trend and grew 17.9 per cent, and for the second month running, truck registrations increased 31.7 per cent to 2,518 units.
Figures released for February by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show that the UK new car market has grown for a 36th consecutive month – a record growth period. The new car market grew 12.0 per cent in February with 76,958 cars registered and this marks the UK’s first three straight years of increases.
SMMT figures on new car registrations showed a positive start to the year as the numbers grew 6.7 per cent in January to 164,856 units – the strongest January since 2007.

The SMMT’s new car registration figures for September show that sales were up 5.6 per cent; the biggest September since 2004. The new ‘64’ number plate boosted volumes, with September marking the 31st consecutive month of growth in the new car market.
Following the SMMT’s publication of new car registration figures for August 2014, the National Franchised Dealers Association has predicted that September, and the newly introduced 64-plate, will bring further increases.
“Sales of commercial vehicles continued to increase in July with registrations up 25.8 per cent”, said Sue Robinson, Director of the National Franchised Dealers Association which represents commercial vehicle and franchised car retailers across the UK, commenting on the SMMT’s van and truck registration figures.
