Richbrook has launched a flash new digital tyre pressure gauge billed as “essential for day-to-day driving or precision track-day set up.” Not much bigger than a typical keyring, the compact gauge measures in both PSA and BAR to a +/- 1% level of accuracy – akin to a much larger unit. A smart blue LED display, unlike black or red is easy to read in any weather, day or night.
A most useful addition has been made to the motorist’s arsenal: Richbrook has released a digital tyre pressure guage that is not much bigger than the average keyring, yet boasts an accurate gauge that measures in both PSA and BAR to a +/- 1 per cent level of accuracy – a degree of accuracy typically found in much larger units. A blue display is intended to facilitate measurement reading in all weather and lighting conditions. and the unit’s design also incorporates an inbuilt flashlight and key clip, making the gauge a handy travel companion in all manner of situations.
Many would reasonably argue that our country’s economic system has recently taken a blow to the head, but during this time when the “credit crunch” is complicating our lives, NE Wholesale is seizing the opportunity to distibguish itself from the majority of the tyre distribution market. As companies prepare to “cut costs” and customers are “clinching their belts”, NE Wholesale says it is remaining committed to its three-year strategic plan.
As Kwik-Fit points out, it’s not just bald tyres that cause danger – old ones are also problematic. New research commissioned by the company found that as many as 16.7 million motorists’ tyres could be suffering from premature ageing, a condition that tends to affect tyres more than five years old.
While tyres contain anti-oxidising chemicals to slow down the rate of ageing, factors such as infrequent use and poor storage can accelerate the ageing process and render them unroadworthy. This is why tyre manufacturers recommend that tyres over five years of age should be visually inspected for signs of premature ageing. To help identify their age all tyres display a coded date of manufacture, something that – no surprises here – three-quarters of British motorists are unaware of. But even so, Kwik-Fit notes that the average punter is unlikely to be able to translate the ‘tyroglyphics’ that appear on the side of the tyre.
On January 1st 2010, European Directive 76/796/EEC comes into force. The new Directive prescribes limits on the permissible percentage of processing oils containing PAHs (polycyclic aroma¬tic hydrocarbons) which are subject to declaration. It will be illegal to produce tyres which do not conform to the specified limits. Processing oils plasticise the rubber compound, making it more flexible and pliable during the blending process.
However, Kraiburg’s retreading partners needn’t worry, as the company started to adapt all its precure retreads back in 1997 and completed the process at the beginning of 2007. The aim was to ensure that customers adhering to the Kraiburg three-year shelf life policy for precured treads would not have non-compliant goods in stock at the beginning of next year.
A plan to open a £6 million tyre recycling plant in Clayton-le-Moors (between Blackburn and Burnley) is “likely” to go ahead, local newspapers have reported. According to the Blackburn Citizen, the waste recycling centre, has been recommended for approval subject to a list of conditions from planning officers. A decision is expected tomorrow Wednesday 7 July 2009.
Arcom, based in Rzezawa, Poland reported an exceptionally busy stand at the Autopromotec Trade Fair in Bologna, saying that “although there is a global economic crisis this was not apparent to us in Bologna”. The company says that it had stands at the previous two fairs but found this occasion to be the most fruitful. In fact, Arcom continues, it was even more fruitful than the fair in Essen which is very specific to the tyre industry and after only two days the Arcom stand had more visitors than in a five day period in previous years. Most of these visitors were Italians, though the company also reports a significant international following too.
MRF, the first Indian tyre manufacturer to produce aviation tyres for military aircraft, has secured an order from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), one of Asia’s largest aerospace companies. The initial supply contract, reports the Financial Chronicle, is for some 400 to 500 tyres for HAL’s Chetak multi-purpose helicopter. India’s defence authorities have also reportedly asked the company to develop tyres for other types of military aircraft.
We’ve been bombarded with a multitude of Trinny & Susannah style homely to comely shows and home renovation programmes along the lines of ‘Changing Rooms’, but to date vans have been largely left out of this makeover mania. One UK company – Vanstyle – intends to change all this. Following the news that a fire had caused some damage to the Welsh TyreGenics operation last Friday (27 March), a spokesperson for Begbies Traynor, administrators of TyreGenics got in touch with Tyres & Accessories to explain that the damage was sustained by a storage facility and not the plant itself, while also revealing that the administrator was confidant of finding a buyer for the business. The business announced that it had gone into administration earlier in January, 18 months after opening as a joint venture between Credential Environmental, BOC, FieldTurf Tarkett and RTI Cryogenics in July 2007. The £4 million recycling plant has a processing capacity of 80 tonnes per day.
The spokesperson stated last Friday: “Last night we were made aware that a large fire had started at a secure outdoor storage facility that TyreGenics leases from a local haulage firm around half a mile from the TyreGenics plant at Baglan Industrial Estate. There were around 2,500 one tonne bags of recycled rubber crumb at the facility and all of this product appears to have been lost to the fire, the cause of which is being investigated by the police. Although the fire produced large amounts of thick black smoke, the fumes were not toxic.”

Borough Recycling Services, a company hoping to construct a new tyre shredding plant near Folkingham, Lincolnshire, has been fined £10,000 after it was found to be storing a quantity of baled tyres 100 times greater than is allowed by law at its existing Kirton Holme-based operation near Boston. The company admitted that it had failed to obtain the correct permits for storing the tyres, alongside other related charges brought after the Environmental Agency visited the site.
