Credential Environmental has sold its hazardous waste division for £8.13 million giving the company’s tyre and waste business – Credential Automotive – a multi-million pound platform for growth through acquisition and new projects.
Wincanton is set to operate a newly-built central warehouse in the Slovak town of Senec for tyre manufacturer Goodyear Dunlop. Sources are reporting that Wincanton will manage the distribution of tyres throughout Slovakia, to the Czech Republic and to Hungary.
Whichever way you look at it 2005 was a significant year for Sapphire Energy Recovery. Not only the did the company successfully dispose of more than 100,000 tonnes of tyres, but it markedly increased industry awareness thanks to a high-profile (putting it mildly) advertising campaign. But neither achievement has gone unnoticed as the 2006 TAFF award nominations (see page 38) recognise the company on both counts. Furthermore Sapphire expects to process its 50 millionth tyre in the coming months, something that is particularly impressive when you consider that the company was only founded in 2000.
Baled tyres can play an important role in large civil engineering projects, research from Onyx Environmental Trust has found. The study focused on the use of bales made up of 100 tyres compressed together and tied with metal wires. Developed initially in the US as a tyre storage method, the system has now been adapted with a tyre bale for construction – the Used Rubber Recycling Operation.

Pirelli Tyres Australia (PTA) has recently awarded their domestic logistics activity to TNT Logistics for a minimum 3 year period. Under the terms of the Agreement, TNT Logistics will service Pirelli’s customer base from a central warehouse in Sydney with cross dock facilities established in Melbourne, Adelaide and Brisbane and Pirelli will be part of TNT’s new 25,000 m² logistics centre completed in August 2005 which is located in Erskine Park. TNT Logistics will also procure and manage on behalf of PTA a pool of purpose built stillages designed specifically for tyre storage to PTA’s specifications. “Pirelli is an important customer to TNT Logistics and we are delighted to further develop this relationship with Pirelli tyres in Australia,” emphasises Chris Demetriou, Director Business Development for TNT Logistics in Australia.
JIA Sources International Ltd, which specialises in the supply of Nitrogen generators for tyre inflation, has just unveiled its newest unit, the ‘NR 250’.
Described by JIA as ‘the ultimate in Nitrogen tyre inflation
Systems’, it is designed to meet the demands of medium to high volume tyre shops, producing a massive 4320 litres of nitrogen per hour.
It comes complete with internal storage tanks and an in-built vacuuming system (to remove the air from the tyre before refilling with Nitrogen), all housed in a free-standing, ergonomically-designed cabinet.
According to market research conducted by steel manufacturer Corus, the automotive industry is demanding premium quality steel at an unprecedented rate. Much of this demand comes from the Far East and Central and Eastern Europe, where tyre production is increasing at a rapid pace. In China alone, consumption of steel tyre cord has increased by 30 per cent a year since 2001. This year, the market is expected to grow to more than 300,000 tonnes. In response Corus has invested £14 million in rod mill enhancements to boost its ability to produce, handle and distribute these premium steels.
At the end of October Kevin Smith and Andrew Wilson, trading as ‘Tyre Shredders Fined £4500’, pleaded guilty to four charges relating to the keeping of waste without a Waste Management Licence at Derby Magistrates. The men also faced a charge of failing to comply with a notice requiring the removal of the illegally deposited waste.
The men were each fined £1600 Environmental Protection Act 1990 and ordered to pay costs of £650 each. Speaking after the case, Rebecca Warren, of the Environment Agency, said: “The incorrect storage of tyres poses both a threat to the environment and a fire risk. A Waste Management Licence sets down what needs to be in place to minimise these risks and therefore operating without one is both illegal and irresponsible. We will not hesitate in taking action against those behaving in such a way.”
Bridgestone Europe has opened its first European First Stop “Model Store” in Zaventem, Belgium in the presence of Francis Vermeiren, Mayor of Zaventem; Minekazu Fujimura, chairman, CEO and president of Bridgestone Europe; and Günther F Unterhauser, senior vice president sales and marketing.
Mahle Filter Systems UK has opened a new, purpose-built warehouse at Salisbury, doubling its storage capacity for automotive filters and engine components to 40,000 square feet. Investment in the new building was £2.5 million and it is equipped with the latest stock picking and handling systems. Products under storage include Mahle and Knecht oil, air, fuel and cabin filters and the range of Mahle Original engine components. Mahle says that the new facility will enable the company to meet its new business development strategy and to accommodate the expanding range of products for the UK and Irish aftermarkets.
Illegally storing 10,000 tyres cost a Halifax man more than £2,000, according to the Environment Agency. Halifax Magistrate’s Court fined Simon John McCormack a total of £500 and ordered him to pay compensation of £1,034 to SHD Holdings. A contribution of £500 to the costs of the Environment Agency, which brought the case, was also imposed.
Sales of exclusive brands are on the up, Belgian wholesale Deldo has reported. According to the company, its Eurowin, Wanli and Sunny brands make all the difference when it comes to winter sales. This year Deldo says it has increased its capacity of Nexen-produced brand Eurowin up to 550,000 tyres. Furthermore the company claims to have sold approximately half a million already, with over 60 per cent being delivered in the last three months. As far as the South China Tire Company-produced Wanli and Sunny brands are concerned, Deldo reports that stocks of Wanli have already sold out, with only five per cent of its Sunny tyres left.
The very latest device in the battle against the car thieves has been launched by security specialists, Autolok. Developed from the Autolok 2000, the new Autolok 2000 Plus incorporates the latest security technology and new user friendly features.
A 23,000 square feet converted warehouse in Byfleet has become the £1 million vehicle after-sales centre for the Lance Owen organisation in the area. The complex is home to a wide range of components and parts, including such diverse products as body panels, bumper units, exhaust pipes and tyres. Each component presented a different storage problem and the answer was a two-tier shelving installation from Link 51, providing more than 3 kilometres of shelving space alongside a number of specialist bays.
According to the site’s parts director, Stephen Kettle, the system is ideal, with 13,000 individual lines now held in stock. He said: “The Link 51 design allows us to store up to £1.5 million worth of stock and, with rapid turn round of, often, no more than one month a characteristic of our business, the need for a highly effective and accessible storage system is clearly vital. The Link 51 system meets this objective and also gives us the versatility we need to accommodate such a wide variation in product and component sizes and types.”
