39 per cent of Saudi Car Crashes Caused By Worn Tyres

The illegal Saudi Arabian worn tyre trade is reportedly thriving despite the implementation of deterrent fines. According to an Arab News report that quote official statistics, used tyres cause 39 per cent of car accidents in the country every year. The people involved in such accidents said to be generally families travelling at high speeds in their cars on tyres they believe are safe. The lack of awareness of the importance of tyre safety in the region is exemplified by the fact that several media reports have been needed to warn drivers of the risk of using second hand worn tyres, or factory-rejected new tyres.

“The summer is the most important season for us, since tyres get damaged as a result of high temperatures,” said Mohamed Thabet, a Yemeni worker at a local tyre shop. Stacked on the wall of his shop were used tyres for sale — some of them so worn that frayed strands of fibre can be seen in patches, Arab News reported.

Michelin to Run Air Fill Up Roadshow

Michelin’s European ‘Fill up with Air’ campaign is coming to nine UK locations, the NTDA has reported. The roadshow will enable motorists to have their tyres checked and the pressure adjusted for free. DfT statistics show that 6 per cent of all fatal motorway accidents in the UK are caused by under-inflated tyres. In addition, driving with your tyres under inflated by as little as 8psi causes a three per cent increase in fuel consumption. If everyone pumped their tyres up to the correct pressure, UK motorists would save an estimated £1 billion a year in fuel costs.

Michelin’s ‘Fill Up With Air’ roadshow has been running in Europe for a number of years and offers drivers the opportunity to have a free tyre health check conducted by technical experts from Michelin. The roadshow will take place in the following locations:

Goodyear Honoured for US NASCAR Charity Auction

Goodyear, exclusive tyre supplier to the top three racing divisions of the US NASCAR championship, announced on July 24 that its ‘Get There’ charity auction has raised US$24,000 for The NASCAR Foundation and its driver affiliated charities. The auction, which saw fans place bids for 43 authentic race used Goodyear Eagle tyres, each signed by top drivers and including important race statistics, was reportedly highly successful, and as a mark of appreciation Goodyear was awarded the honour of being named a “Champion Friend of the Foundation” for the 2007 NASCAR Nextel Cup season. This is, according to the foundation, the highest distinction for charitable participation that can be conferred upon a one-time donor.

“As a long-standing supplier of NASCAR, we’re very proud to help support The NASCAR Foundation and its important mission,” said Stu Grant, Goodyear’s general manager of global race tyres. “Goodyear would like to thank all the fans who bid on these unique race-used Eagle tyres and helped us raise so much money for The NASCAR Foundation.”

IRSG: Rubber Consumption to Reach 32 Million Tons by 2020

The International Rubber Study Group (IRSG) reported during the World Rubber Summit last month in Bangkok that world rubber consumption is now forecast to reach 31.8 million tons by 2020, representing an increase of around 10 million tons compared to 2006. The IRSG underscored the importance of developing better statistics and forecasts. “Industry is in serious need for improved data, but it is increasingly difficult to obtain and derive such statistics,” IRSG officials said. They called on all stakeholders to cooperate with the Group in developing innovative ways to obtain better statistics on all aspects of the rubber industry.

Injury and Death Rates for Mechanics Exceed National Average

(Akron/Tire Review) The Bureau of Labor and Statistics (BLS) has released an article in Compensation and Working Conditions Online that concludes automotive technicians are more likely to be killed or injured on the job than the average U.S. worker. The article reports that from 2003 to 2005, 147 technicians were fatally injured at work – a death rate of 5.3 per 100,000 workers.

The fatality rate for all occupations is 4 per 100,000 workers. Additionally, there were 15,560 non-fatal injuries and illnesses to technicians in 2005, down roughly 10 per cent from 2003. There were around 954,000 U.S. technicians during this time.

Most of the injuries and illnesses reported during 2005 were due to contact with an object or equipment or overexertion. Assaults and violent acts accounted for 30 per cent of workplace fatalities in 2003-2005.

South African Govt. “Not Interested” in Tyre Safety

According to a representative from South Africa’s SA Tyre Recycling Process Company, the nation’s Department of Transport and the South African Bureau of Standards are “not interested” in setting standards to ensure that all second-hand tyres sold are safe. This apparent lack of interest comes despite statistics showing approximately 25 per cent of all road accidents in South Africa are caused by sub-standard tyres.

Speaking at a waste management summit in Cape Town, Etienne Human from the SA Tyre Recycling Process Company made reference to the results a recent survey. These results indicated that 80 per cent of tyres were unfit for further service when removed from a vehicle. However instead of being scrapped many of these tyres were instead re-sold, often at the side of the road, and quickly resumed their working life on South African roads.

Michelin Thailand Urges the Use of Radials

The Thailand division of radial tyre pioneer Michelin has urged local truck and bus business operators to switch to radial tyres in the interest of safety, cost effectiveness and environmental benefits. The president of Michelin Siam Co. Ltd, Prayong Hirunyawanich said that although the company has sold radials in Thailand for 16 years, their sales are still overshadowed by those of conventional bias tyres. Statistics show that about 1.8 million tyres are fitted to trucks and buses every year, but only half a million – 28 per cent – of these are radials.

The use of radial tyres is low because consumers are not aware of the products and they are turned off by the initial 30-50 per cent higher price compared with bias tyres, says Netiphand Hutasingh, Michelin’s truck and bus marketing manager. “Most consumers first think about their spending if they switch to radial tyres but they do not really know the benefits they will receive from the products in the long run,” he commented.

Chinese Tyre Production Reaches 283 million units

Data from Chinese National Bureau of Statistics reveals 2005 witnessed a sustainable and steady growth in the tyre industry. The data, quoted in a paper recently published by research and markets, reports that output reached 283 million units, up 18.7 per cent over 2004. Sales revenue totalled more than 80 billion yuan (£5.2 billion).

Strong Growth in China

Analysts have reported strong growth in both tyre production and exports in the Chinese market, with exports growing at a substantially faster rate than production. Quoting data obtained from the National Bureau of Statistics, analysts state that 2005 was a year of steady growth for China’s tyre industry, with output reaching 283 million units, an increase of 18.7 per cent over the previous year. This equates to sales revenue of more than RMB80 billion ( £5.25 billion ).

Complex Car Electronics Mean More Malfunctions

Seasonal demands for replacement car batteries show no signs of diminishing, says battery expert Varta. In fact, despite new automotive technology and sophisticated control systems, the number of breakdowns caused by electronic malfunction has increased by 20 per cent over the past two decades. An evaluation of 1.9 million breakdowns handled by the German ADAC motoring organization in 2004 revealed that electronic-derived breakdowns account for 36 per cent of all call-outs.

New NTDA Web Site

The NTDA has launched a new updated website at www.ntda.co.uk. The professionally designed site features links to useful information including the NTDA conference report and the association’s Tyrelink scheme. It also features details of recent announcements from the NTDA, not to mention diary dates and useful links. The re-launch follows an unfortunate bout of web vandalism that saw the NTDA site temporarily hijacked by hackers at the end of September. NTDA representatives told Tyres & Accessories that the association has completely solved this problem with the new site. According to official statistics, the NTDA sites receives up 2 million hits a year from 2000 unique users each month – T&A is certainly a regular visitor.

Matador Extends Casing Warranty to Include Second-life with Bandag

Slovakian tyre manufacturer Matador has decided to extend the warranty on its casings to a second tyre life when its products are retreaded by a Bandag Dealer in Slovakia, Hungary, Poland and the Czech Republic. Matador now recommends Bandag for the second life of its casings.

The collaboration with Bandag dealers streamlines the truck-tyre division of the Púchov-based manufacturer. Matador and Bandag have been operating in the same Eastern European countries for many years, going to market with complementary products and skills. The extended casing warranty for Bandag retreading is a logical next step towards providing end-users with cost-effective tyre solutions.

ATS Euromaster Launches Safe2Drive Scheme

ATS Euromaster has introduced an innovative “Safe2Drive” scheme for all employees who drive while at work. The move is designed to ensure 4,000 employees will have their driving skills individually assessed and, where necessary, improved to ensure they become more advanced and safer drivers technically, practically and behaviourally.

Concerned at the risk of its employees being involved in road incidents while behind the wheel on business, ATS Euromaster recruited DriveTech (UK) Limited, a company that specialises in reducing occupational road risk and improving driving standards. Record Recovery Levels for Responsible Recycler Scheme

Statistics newly released by the Tyre Recovery Association show that for the first time members of the Association (all of whom are affiliated to the TIC Responsible Recycler Scheme) collectively recovered over 320,000 tonnes of waste tyres in 2005. This represented more than a 12 per cent increase over the 2004 figure (285,000 tonnes) and is the first time the Scheme has passed the 300,000 tonnes barrier. Indications suggest this figure will rise even further in 2006. The UK industry is estimated to generate 475,000 tonnes of used tyre arisings annually.

“One in Four German Motorists Speed” – Report

A study carried out by Continental revealed that 25 per cent of motorists in Germany “frequently” drive faster than the legal speed limit. However, when it comes to assessing other motorists’ behaviour, 92 per cent believed that other motorists speed “often, very often, or always.” It will probably come as little surprise that younger drivers are the worst offenders, with almost half of the 18-25 age group exceeding speed limits.
