Reducing battery-related breakdowns with Conti intelligent sensor

Breakdown statistics collected by Germany motorists’ organisation ADAC indicate that its crews were called out to 2.6 million breakdowns last year. In almost one-third of these cases, motorists summoned the ADAC because their car simply failed to start due to a flat or defective battery. Battery-related problems are the single most common cause of breakdowns, and have been so for a number of years now. But in future, vehicles will be able to identify a low battery and report this to drivers via a smartphone app.

Tufty to feature in propaganda exhibition

Sixty years since he was created, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents' retired road safety squirrel Tufty Fluffytail will feature in an exhibition exploring international state-related propaganda from the 20th and 21st centuries, which opens next week.

Tufty, a red squirrel with signature blue and yellow clothing, was created by the late Elsie Mills MBE in 1953 to help communicate simple safety messages to children. Now, the ever-popular creature, who was joined in his adventures by Minnie Mole and Willy Weasel to name a few of his companions, will feature in the British Library's exhibition Propaganda: Power and Persuasion, from May 17 to September 17.

Ecowing 5% more fuel efficient than standard Kumho tyre – test

A fuel economy challenge staged by Kumho Tyres Australia has highlighted the fuel savings its ecowing ES01 can deliver. The company says that during the challenge its rolling resistance optimised tyre delivered a 5.1 per cent advantage in fuel efficiency in comparison with a conventional steel belted Kumho tyre.

Road traffic volume down slightly in 2012

The Department for Transport has released statistics relating to road traffic in Great Britain in the fourth quarter of last year and for 2012 as a whole. Over the year, the volume of all motor vehicle traffic fell by 0.4 per cent to 302.6 billion vehicle miles. Cars accounted for 79.4 per cent of all motor vehicle traffic, which is broadly the same proportion as in recent years.

Slow start to the year for UK motorbike sales

UK motorcycle sales were down 14 per cent in January, compared with the same month last year. According to the National Motorcycle Dealers Association, poor sales can be attributed to the “arctic weather” that affected much of the country during the middle of month.

Automating tyre handling with Crisplant

Crisplant, part of Germany’s Beumer Group since 2009 and today a leading global supplier of automated material handling systems, will launch its first automated material handling system specifically customised for the tyre production industry at next week’s Tire Technology Expo. Describing the new Crisplant Tire Tray Transportation and Sortation System, the company says it automates manual handling and provides traceability and tracking of individual tyres through every stage of the production process.

“By eliminating manual handling of tires throughout production, tyre manufacturers can enhance workplace safety and continually monitor and optimise process efficiency,” explains Crisplant managing director Klaus Schäfer. “In creating this new system Crisplant has used the same skills and expertise with which it has helped major distribution hubs worldwide, to transform their business to achieve lower operating costs and higher process efficiency.”

Of course, white road markings are only effective if you can see them and, in a comment issued before the RSMA report came out, Matthew Mycock, MD of Autoglass, referred to forthcoming DfT statistics that are predicted to show that over 1,000 more road accidents are reported in November compared to the average month, with November 19th being the worst day.

Continental launches Youth Safe-Driving Program in China

Continental, in collaboration with Safe Kids China, has launched the Youth Safe-Driving Program 2012/2013 at Tongji University in Shanghai.

Under the motto, "Be a Responsible Young Driver", the two-year program aims to enhance road safety awareness and promote safe driving behaviour among young drivers as well as reduce road injuries. Representatives from the Shanghai Municipal Centre for Disease Control and Prevention and the Automotive Studies School at Tongji University joined student ambassadors at the opening ceremony.

The Department for Transport has released statistics concerning British road traffic levels for the second quarter of this year. The statistics are divided into vehicle types (cars, light vans, HGVs and other vehicles – this latter category includes motorcycles).

Automechanika Middle East continues to grow

With 1,324 exhibitors from 56 countries and 20,715 visitors from 120 countries, the 10th Automechanika Middle East, held recently in Dubai, proved to be a very successful show. The upbeat trend at the exhibition was a direct reflection of the extremely positive outlook for the regional aftermarket, as underlined by Dubai's most recent trade figures.

ATS-E highlights October-March cold weather commuting

Tyre dealers have often emphasised the improvement in performance at sub-seven degrees Celsius that cold weather tyres offer, but the relatively mild weather of the 2011/12 winter may have diminished the upward momentum of consumer interest in the product. However, ATS Euromaster argues that an analysis of UK temperatures during peak driving hours in even the last winter shows that fitting cold weather products would have been worthwhile. Temperatures dropped below seven degrees Celsius during prime commuting hours on 147 separate days between 1 October 2011 and 31 March 2012. The statistics, provided by the Met Office, cover temperatures in 10 major UK cities from 7:00 till 9:00 and 16:00 till 18:00.

Michelin reports good start for mobile site

After being live for only a few months, Michelin says the mobile version of its corporate website has proven to be a huge hit. The French tyre maker describes the site’s stats as “encouraging” and says it has experienced a 135 per cent increase in visits. Other pertinent statistics reported by Michelin are that the average visit to the site lasts one and a half minutes, and 30 per cent of users are located in the United States, with 18 per cent in France.

Over one million drivers aged over 80

The number of drivers over the age of 80 in the UK has now topped one million according to information obtained by the Institute of Advanced Motorists following a freedom of information request to the DVLA at the end of January.

Another million incident-free hours for Cooper Tupelo plant

Workers at Cooper Tire & Rubber’s Findlay plant may still be locked out but at Cooper’s facility in Tupelo, Mississippi, employees reached one million man-hours without a lost-time incident during the course of this week. The achievement marks the second time Cooper's Tupelo employees reached the million-hour mark; in September 2010 they also passed a million hours without a lost-time case.
