Hayes Lemmerz to supply Strick

Hayes Lemmerz International, Inc. has announced that its Commercial Highway Division reached an agreement with Strick Corporation to supply 100 per cent of all standard, non-specified, wheel end components for Strick in 2004 and 2005. This includes CentruMount(R) Steel Wheels, Cast Hub and Drums and Centrifuse(R) Brake Drums. This agreement continues to support the Division’s goal of providing major trailer manufacturers with innovative and quality components. Strick Corporation produces custom dry freight vans.

Quality award for Goodyear Philippines

Goodyear Philippines Inc. has been recommended to receive the latest global quality certification standard, ISO/TS 16949:2002. The standard specifies quality system requirements for design, development, production and installation of automotive-related products. Goodyear Philippines is the first of the company’s factories in the ASEAN region to achieve the new standard.

EC presents eSafety road map

The European Commission presented a road map for safer and intelligent vehicles at the ITS World Congress in Madrid. Erkki Liikanen, commissioner for enterprise and information society, presented a detailed action plan for eSafety over the years 2004-2008. It aims for rapid take-up of active safety systems using advanced information and communications technology. As part of the pedestrian protection agreement, the automotive industry will equip all new motor vehicles with anti-lock breaking systems (ABS) from 1 July 2004. Liikanen said he wants the industry to seriously consider electronic stability programmes (ESP) as the next standard safety features in all vehicles in 2005. 2006 should be a realistic target year to introduce eCall, which allows vehicle safety-related information to be passed to a public service answering point in the event of an accident. He also thinks collision warning kits using 24 GHz short range radars should be fitted in new cars from 2007.

25″ tyre from Pirelli

Pirelli has introduced a new tyre, aimed specifically at the Hummer H2 tuner market, the Pirelli Scorpion Zero 315/40 VR25 XL. As well as looking good, Pirelli says that the XL rating means that the tyre can safely take the weight of vehicles such as the massive Hummer SUV. The standard OE size tyre for the Hummer is 315/70 R17.

Bridgestone/Firestone signs deal with Paccar

Bridgestone/Firestone North American Tire have signed a ten-year agreement to continue to supply tyres as OE on Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks and other Paccar vehicles. Bridgestone was named as “standard OE tyre” by Paccar back in 1991 and are supplied on all new vehicles in the USA unless the customer specifies otherwise. In Europe, Paccar supplies vehicles under the DAF, Foden and Leyland names.

Cooper-Standard Automotive controls Jin Young Standard

Cooper Tire & Rubber Company’s Cooper-Standard Automotive has increased its ownership position in Jin Young Standard of South Korea from 49 to 90 percent and has changed the name of the company to Cooper-Standard Automotive Korea, Inc.This transaction will give Cooper-Standard Automotive a significant presence in Korea through a well-established company, and will facilitate the expansion of its automotive sealing operations in the growing Asian automotive market. Dug Soo Kim, president of Jin Young Standard prior to this transaction, will continue to head the company’s operations.

Michelin OE On New Porsche

The recently-launched Michelin Pilot Sport tyre will be fitted as standard on the new Porsche 996 GT3. The sizes are 235/40 ZR18 (front) and 295/30 ZR18 (rear).

Amcast Sells Speedline

Amcast Industrial Corporation has announced that it has sold Speedline, its Italian wheel subsidiary, to a European-based company. The net proceeds from the sale will be negligible. Byron O. Pond, chairman of the board and chief executive officer, said, “Speedline’s recent operating performance has had a significant, detrimental impact on Amcast’s profitability. The transaction should return the remaining Amcast businesses to positive net earnings in its third fiscal quarter.”The company also received news that the New York Stock Exchange believes the company is below the criteria for the NYSE’s continued listing standards. The company no longer meets the equity standard, which requires a listed company to have an average market capitalization of not less than $50 million over a 30 trading-day period and stockholders’ equity of not less than $50 million. The company has expected this action and is reviewing its available alternatives to assure a continuous public trading market for its common shares.

Wood Communications To Distribute Pirelli Optical Cables

Pirelli Telecom Cables and Systems has appointed Wood Communications as a distributor of its DeskWave range of optical data cables in the Republic of Ireland. Produced primarily for LANs and other network applications, the standard range is available from one to 48 fibres available in a range of fibre types. Custom-made cables from Pirelli with higher fibre counts, alternative fibre types or with copper and fibre elements combined, are also available to future-proof cable installations. Wood Communications was established in 1924 and is one of Irelands leading distributors of network products.

Michelin Full Year Sales Down

Michelin is expected to announce a small drop in sales to 15.54 billion Euro from 15.75 billion Euro. Analysts say this is likely to be due to the weak dollar. They also suggest that Michelin will increase prices to meet growing costs of oil-based raw materials. An announcement from Michelin is expected later today after the close of the stock market. Michelin’s full results are expected in two week’s time.The company’s share prices were pressured last Friday when Standard and Poor’s put the group on negative credit watch over unfunded pension liabilities. However they were given a 4.6 lift on Tuesday by good news from the auto sector suggesting a revival was under way.

Goodyear “Disappointed” At Rating Downgrade

Goodyear president and COO Robert Keegan said the company was “disappointed” at the decision of Standard & Poor’s Rating Services to lower its rating of Goodyear’s debt by two degrees, from BB+ to BB-. This is the minimum rating required as a condition for borrowing in some cases. Keegan said that Goodyear was “fundamentally sound” and that the company’s plan to improve operational and financial performance was on track, adding that 2003 “will be a transition year for Goodyear.”

Nigerian Standards Organisation Destroys Sub-standard Tyres

The Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has recently destroyed large amounts of sub-standard goods in a move designed to emphasis the need to improve the quality of goods traded in Nigeria. The latest batch of goods to be destroyed included second-hand tyres imported and sold by Sanusi Gbenga Tyres Enterprises. According to a spokesman for SON the tyres which were branded Dunlop, Michelin, Continental and Kleber were full of flaws, cracks, blisters, and foreign materials. These, according to him, are unreliable and potential death-traps.
