Pirelli Sponsors ‘Blade Runner’ Oscar Pistorius

The Pirelli Group communicates has sealed a sponsorship deal with South African athlete Oscar Pistorius. Pirelli Chairman Marco Tronchetti Provera described Pistorius as: “An extraordinary person. We are happy to be able to give him our support. For Pirelli, he could represent our new Carl Lewis; his story witnesses to the fact that will, passion and technology can vanquish any obstacles, improving the lives of many.”

“Pirelli” – added Oscar Pistorius – “is a great company and an important brand. This agreement is another sign, after winning my case to have the chance to participate in the Olympics, that barriers are in the eyes of the beholder, of those who believe them to be barriers. It would be a dream come true for me to be a testimonial like Carl Lewis.”

Maxxis Official Tyre Partner of Isle Of Man TT Races

Maxxis has been named as the Official Tyre Partner for the 2008 Isle of Man TT Races, which take place between Saturday, May 24 and Saturday, June 7. Maxxis will enjoy category exclusivity making it the only tyre manufacturer to be officially affiliated to the races and actively promoted by the organisers in all their communications.

The sponsorship package entitles Maxxis to significant trackside advertising, branding on the footbridge crossing the start straight, branding on the start line grandstand, hospitality, prime position advertising in the TT Programme and branding on the press and winners’ enclosure back drops and on the Isle of Man TT website.

BFG Official Tyre for Mustang Series

Michelin North America’s BFGoodrich brand is the presenting sponsor and official tyre of the Ford Racing Mustang Challenge for the Miller Cup.

The seven-race professional kicked off this past weekend at Road Atlanta, with all factory-built Ford Mustang FR500S race cars competing on BFGoodrich g-Force R1 tyres.

“BFG’s involvement in the Ford Racing Mustang Challenge for the Miller Cup goes beyond just our sponsorship involvement,” said Doug Brown, brand category manager for BFGoodrich brand. “BFGoodrich Tires wants to provide yet another avenue to recognise the efforts put forth by the drivers because we know they can count on the g-Force R1 tyre lap after lap and we want the competitors to be recognised for their racing ability as well.” (Tire Review/Akron)

Micheldever Appoints New Kumho Brand Manager

Micheldever Tyre Services has announced the appointment of Jason Burgess as its new Kumho Brand Manager. Micheldever holds the distinction of being the largest Kumho distributor in Europe, and UK sales of the brand are rapidly growing – indeed, Micheldever reports that Kumho has become an important component of the company’s continued growth, growth that saw 2007 tyre sales reach six million units.

Maxxis Renews Team Green Sponsorship

Maxxis has renewed its sponsorship of the Kawasaki Motors UK motocross and enduro racing initiative, Team Green, and will continue to supply the squad with tyres for the 2008 season. “After having a fantastic 2007 season with Maxxis tyres, we are delighted that the Team Green squad is receiving continued support in 2008,” commented Alex Brawn, racing co-ordinator at Kawasaki Motors UK about announcing the renewal.

“Since our riders take part in a variety of off road events, on two and four stroke Kawasaki machines from 85cc to 450cc, we need a range of tyres that will cater for all disciplines and conditions,” he added. “We make tough demands, but Maxxis tyres meet all our requirements, and this means our riders can challenge for race and championship wins.”

Second HiQ Motorsport Forum in Peterborough Today

HiQ says it is hosting an evening of Motorsport “thrills and spills” at its Whittlesey Road, Peterborough, store from 6.30pm to 8.30pm today. The idea is for the retail chain to give motoring enthusiasts a taste of the HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championships, which the company is officially sponsoring for the first time. The high octane entertainment will feature appearances from leading touring car team Seat and driver Darren Turner, who will give onlookers an insight into the world of competitive motor sport. Tonight’s event is the second motorsport forum to ever take place, following what the company called an “extremely successful event in Grays last week, which was attended by more than 100 people.”

Kumho Aims for Champions League

Manchester United’s recent Kumho-sponsored thrashing of Aston Villa 4-0 was described by BBC Match of the Day pundits as some of the best football for a decade. So as Man U extended their Premiership lead to six points, Kumho’s management reflected on how this sporting success could be mirrored for Kumho in the tyre trade, hoping that their team has not only turned a corner in Europe, but made progress towards it goal of entering the tyre world’s own Champions League.

Kumho Europe decided to leverage its platinum sponsorship of UK premier league leaders Manchester United by holding the Kumho Big Match Day on 30 March 2008. Being platinum sponsor gave Kumho the opportunity to drape the main entrance into Old Trafford with two enormous banners, offer interactive experiences and event zones at promotional booths outside the stadium as well as hospitality programmes for dealers and distributors who were invited to the match.

BTCC Goes to Grays

HiQ’s recently launched sponsorship of the British Touring Cars Championship (BTCC) means the HiQ branch in Grays, Essex will host an race-themed entertainment on Thursday 27 March. HiQ is hosting the evening of thrills and spills at its London Road store from 6.30pm to 8.30pm, to give motoring enthusiasts a taste of the HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championships, which the company is officially sponsoring for the first time.

The entertainment will feature appearances from leading touring car team Vauxhall and driver Tom Onslow-Cole, who will give onlookers an insight into the world of competitive motor sport. A question and answer forum will take place with the team from 7:00pm to 8:00pm and an autograph signing session will also be held, to celebrate the latest round of the BTCC, which takes place at nearby Brands Hatch. 10 free pairs of tickets will be up for grabs as well, to celebrate HiQ’s sponsorship of the championships.

Maxxis Enters Second Year of XRRA Rock Racing

2008 will see Maxxis maintain its title sponsorship of the Xtreme Rock Racing (XRRA) Series for a second year. The Maxxis XRRA Series is covered extensively on cable’s Speed network and started this March with the first race in the western division, followed by the eastern division opener in April. US finals are scheduled for September, while the series also has international perspective – the German Championship runs between April and October.

“I believe that we are starting to see the industry recognising the series as the Maxxis XRRA. With the factory support we receive, not to mention the individual event support of Creighton King, we believe this is a great opportunity to capitalise on our momentum coming out of 2007. Santa Pod Partnership Marks Marangoni’s 2008 Tuning Market Offensive

Following its debut appearance at Autosport International, Marangoni Tyre is aiming to build the brand through a title sponsorship agreement with the ‘speed’ venue. Yokohama Enters Partnership with Mazdaspeed

Mazda’s motor racing support operation in North America, Mazdaspeed Motorsports Development, has announced Yokohama Tire as a new partner for the B-K Motorsports Lola B07/46-Mazda MZR-R LMP2 team as of 2008. The multi-year partnership is, according to Mazdaspeed, more than just a sponsorship arrangement, with Yokohama acting as a key contributor to the team’s overall programme in terms of technical and marketing collaboration. The announcement of Yokohama’s partnership was made simultaneously to a similar agreement with BP.

BFNAT Super Bowl Spots Set

Bridgestone/Firestone North American Tire’s sponsorship of the NFL and the upcoming Super Bowl halftime show will certainly give the company’s Bridgestone brand massive exposure. And BFNAT plans to leverage the opportunity with two commercial spots during the game on February 3.

Even though BFNAT had bought two 30-second commercial spots for the broadcast, the tyremaker produced three TV spots. The two schedule spots – entitled “Scream” and “Unexpected Obstacles” – will air during the second and third quarters. The third spot – “Lucky Dog,” a 60-second commercial – will now be used in movie theatres nationwide, and will begin rolling after the Super Bowl.

Yokohama Sponsoring NBA Teams

Yokohama Tire Corp. signed sponsorship deals with three National Basketball Association (NBA) teams, according to Dan King, Yokohama vice president of sales – the San Antonio Spurs, Boston Celtics, and the Golden State Warriors. Yokohama’s latest sponsorship move follows partnerships with three NFL teams, the Baltimore Ravens, Cleveland Browns and Atlanta Falcons, plus UCLA and USC college football. Yokohama also sponsored two minor league baseball teams last season, the Triple-A Columbus Clippers and the Double-A Reading Phillies. (Tire Review/Akron)

Marangoni has announced major sponsorship deals with Santa Pod Raceway at Autosport International 2008. This begins with Marangoni being title sponsor of the first major tuning show of 2008, The Fast Show on 9 March, then associate sponsor of Jap Show on 22 June. Avon Tyres Back in Expanded GT Championship

Avon Tyres is heading into its third year of title sponsorship of the high profile UK sports car racing championship, the British GT Championship. Since 2006, iconic cars including the Aston Martin DBRS9, Ferrari 430 and Dodge Viper have battled it out for the British GT Championship, with 500bhp machines racing at the UK’s top circuits on Avon tyres.

This year, a new category has been introduced. To be known as GT4, the category features sports cars based more closely on production models than the race-bred GT3 machines that spearhead the series. “Last year’s championship was fantastic as it went down to the final round, and 2008 looks set to be even better,” said Julian Baldwin, managing director of Cooper Tire Europe. “As well as a good entry of GT3 cars already signed up to fight for the overall title, there has been a lot of interest in the GT4 category, both from new and existing teams. It all helps to add even more evocative sports cars to the grid and showcase our products in the most spectacular way.“
