Hankook sponsors Royal International Horse Show

Hankook Tyres recently sponsored The Royal International Horse Show, one of the biggest outdoor shows in the UK, in a move to reach out to a new audience. The Royal International Horse Show, which took place at its venue at Hickstead, attracting more than 15,000 visitors. The event ran over 6 days (26 – 31 July) and was televised on Sky Sports. Spectators were given the opportunity to see a wide variety of show jumping, eventing, dressage and showing competitions from the world’s elite horses and riders.

NZ tyre shop tackled over use of All Black name

Major football teams such as Manchester United and Germany’s HSV have gladly taken on tyre makers as sponsorship partners, but unauthorised affiliation is another matter entirely. A tyre shop in Auckland, New Zealand discovered this recently when it fell foul of the New Zealand Rugby Union.

Kumho kicks off with Austrian football sponsorship

Austrian football team SK Rapid Wien has welcomed Kumho Tyres as its newest sponsor. Upon signing an agreement on July 15 the Vienna based club, which participates in the Austrian Bundesliga, stated that in Kumho it had found a prestigious sponsor. The three-year deal between Kumho and SK Rapid Wien gets underway immediately.

Zircotec supports 10 teams at Formula Student

Coatings specialist Zircotec supported 10 teams at Formula Student 2011, which was held at Silverstone last weekend. The firm’s ceramic coatings were used by a number of the participants including University of Hertfordshire, Coventry University and Cambridge, the latter adopting Zircotec’s patented carbon composite coating to protect a composite bulkhead. “Zircotec believes that Formula Student is an extremely worthwhile activity, helping participants to understand and implement the technologies of today’s contemporary race cars,” says Zircotec’s managing director Terry Graham.

Pirelli named as Russian Cup sponsor

It isn’t Bridgestone as previously announced, yet a tyre maker will act as sponsor to the Russian Cup after all. The tyre maker in question is Pirelli, who on July 16 announced it will be the “institutional sponsor” for the Russian Cup’s 2011-12 season. Pirelli says it chose to sponsor the Russian Cup to consolidate its brand awareness in a rapidly growing market. It adds that Russia, where Pirelli has been present since 1985, represents one of the areas in which the group’s growth strategy is focused and – referring to plans for establishing a factory there – where it aims to have a direct industrial presence.

No Russian Cup sponsorship – Bridgestone to “explore opportunities” in Russia

An announcement was made on July 15 that Bridgestone would serve as title sponsor to the Russian Football Union’s (RFU) Russian Cup during the 2011-12 season. However Bridgestone reported on July 19 that on the same day as this first announcement was made, the RFU revealed its selection of a company other than Bridgestone as the event’s title sponsor.

Bridgestone title sponsor of ‘Russian Cup’ football championship

Title sponsorship for a major Russian football event will feature a familiar name this year – on July 15 Bridgestone Corporation announced the Bridgestone brand will serve as title sponsor of the Russian Football Union’s Russian Cup during the 2011-12 season. The nationwide football tournament will be officially titled the “Bridgestone –Russian Cup” will continue until May 2012. Premier league teams, who compete in the event alongside first division, second division and amateur clubs, begin their participation with the 1/16 finals that begin on July 17. The tournament’s winner will represent Russia in the UEFA Europa League.

Michelin’s Chennai training centre gets underway

On July 15 the very first course will commence at the new Michelin Training Centre at the tyre maker’s Chennai site. The centre, which officially opened on May 30, has been set up to improve the employability of people in the local area; the first course held there will impart English language skills, and other courses, including computer skills, accounting and vocational programmes, are already planned. The Michelin Training Centre is located within the Thervoy Kandigai Industrial Park in Chennai’s Thiruvallur district, where the Michelin is investing Rs 40 billion (£560 million) in a truck and bus tyre facility.

Westlake sponsors NTDA annual golf day

Westlake Tyres has announced that it will sponsor the NTDA’s annual golf day, which will be held on 15 September at the Oxfordshire Golf Club. The brand’s sponsorship will make it the title sponsor of the day. “Westlake Tyres strongly believe that the NTDA is doing a great job of promoting the interests of tyre retailers to a higher professional standard and that is why it is an enormous pleasure sponsoring their Golf Day event. We really look forward to strengthening our partnership with this particular trade association in the UK,” stated Jorge Crespo, European general manager of Eskay Tyres.

Kumho unveils German Facebook page

Kumho Tire Europe GmbH has launched a new Facebook page for its fans in German-speaking markets, www.facebook.com/KumhoTireEurope. The company says the page includes sections dedicated to its tyres, motorsport and football, plus event-specific sections such as the IAA 2011 show or the upcoming Kumho Winter Experience 2012. In addition, as exclusive partner to the Bundesliga team HSV, Kumho Tyres will offer sweepstake prizes that include VIP tickets for the 2011/2012 season. Another current offer is VIP tickets to this year’s 24-hour race at the Nürburgring.

The prevalence of motorsport and rally involvement amongst tyre manufacturers is testament to its effectiveness as a brand promotion tool. Yet most events, in Europe at least, take place in the summer months, and maintaining a profile through motorsport in the colder part of the year requires a measure of creative thinking. Kumho, through its German operation, did just that and kept its name on the lips of European petrolheads during the winter of 2010/11 through its sponsorship of the ‘Drift & Drive’ rally school in Finland.

Infinity Tyres sponsors the first race of 2011 at York Racecourse

Infinity Tyres, part of the Al Dobowi Group recently sponsored the first event of the 2011 horseracing season at York racecourse in a meet which was long awaited by racing professionals and fans. This sponsorship was conducted in conjunction with Bond International, distributor of the brand in the UK and it is reported forms part of two firms’ strategy to “to get closer to the customer”, as Reg Bond, owner and managing director of Bond International, stated. “To promote a brand, you must go to the consumer and a tyre means little to a consumer, what grabs him, is something special, and this is special.”

Yokohama Tire expands baseball sponsorship with Phillies deal

Yokohama Tire Corporation has added a second Major League Baseball team to its US sport sponsorship portfolio after signing an agreement with the Philadelphia Phillies. Included in the Phillies sponsorship deal is Yokohama signage in strategic positions, such as behind the home plate and on the first and third base lines, pre-game, post-game and in-game spots on the Phillies flagship radio station throughout the season, in-stadium displays and in-game announcements on the public address system and LED scoreboard.

Kumho expands football sponsorship with Germany’s HSV

Manchester United sponsor Kumho Tyres has extended its European football activities by signing on as an exclusive partner to German club Hamburger SV. The Hamburg-based team, which is currently ranked seventh in Germany’s premier Bundesliga championship, welcomes Kumho as sponsor starting in the 2011/12 season. As part of the two-year contract between Kumho and HSV, the tyre maker’s advertisements will be displayed in the stadium and in other relevant media, including at press conferences, on game entry tickets, official teams photos and on the HSV website.
