Vauxhall Ampera wins alternative Monte Carlo Rally

After winning the "Car of the Year 2012" award, the Vauxhall/Opel Ampera has now also won the 13th International Monte Carlo Rally for electric and alternative propulsion cars.

Four Amperas ranked among the top 10 vehicles. The French duo Bernard Darniche and Joseph Lambert managed to beat the entire competitive field. On Sunday, the final day of the contest, the revolutionary electric vehicle reached the finish line in the capital of the Côte d'Azur principality.

Nexen tyre wins Red Dot Design Award 2012

Nexen has been awarded the Red Dot Design Award 2012 for its N9000 tyre. “Our N9000’s competitiveness is proven by its latest win, as the Red Dot Design Award 2012 is widely known as one of the world’s top three global design accolades,” said Lee Hyun Bong, CEO of Nexen Tyre. “This is a great achievement for our design strategy as it comes so close after Nexen’s other wins, the IF Design Award 2010 and Good Design Award 2011.”

Pirelli rear F1 tyre design reacts to new aerodynamic regulations

Pirelli will enter its second season of Formula One as exclusive tyre supplier this weekend at the Australian Grand Prix; previewing the race, the tyre manufacturer has outlined another of the ways its tyres have changed since last season, responding to new aerodynamic and technical regulations, which have had a profound impact on car design. The banishment of blown diffusers – with the exhaust outlets now having to exit the car higher, pushing the centre of pressure forwards – have resulted in reduced grip at the rear, meaning that Pirelli has had to rise to the challenge of increasing the grip given by its rear tyres.

Toyo A23 OE on 2013 Mazda crossover SUV

Toyo has announced a new original equipment deal in the US, where its all-season A23 tyre has been selected for the Grand Touring model of the 2013 Mazda CX-5 compact crossover SUV. The Toyo A23 will be supplied in size 225/55 R19.

Apollo to unveil Aspire 4G in Geneva

At next week’s Auto Salon in Geneva, Apollo Tyres is unveiling its latest UHP summer passenger car tyre. Known as the Aspire 4G, the new range will be available in W and Y speed ratings. Further details will be available following the tyre’s official launch on 7 March.

New Tatneft range, sizes for 2012

Russian tyre maker Tatneft has announced the introduction of a new tyre range and new sizes in several of its product lines. All new for 2012 is a 4×4 range from its Viatti brand. The Viatti Bosco A/T will debut in a size 205/70R15 fitment. Tatneft says this new range has been specially designed for the growing crossover utility vehicle segment and is said to combine comfort with a quiet, stable and efficient ride. It is also able to withstand heavy loads, the manufacturer states.

Southampton based alignment specialist Supertracker, who says its ongoing success is centred around a competitive mixture of wheel alignment speed and efficiency, reports that its latest STR410 unit is able to provide customers with an accurate alignment in just 59 seconds.

At home in Clermont-Ferrand? It’s all a matter of accessibility, says Michelin

Discussions are currently underway over plans to extend the French rail network with a new, second high speed line between Paris and Lyon. The project is known as the LGV POCL (short for Paris, Orléans, Clermont-Ferrand and Lyon), and at present four potential routes are being evaluated. The decision ultimately arrived at is, French media sources indicate, of high interest to Michelin, whose headquarters are situated in Clermont-Ferrand. Michelin managing partner Michel Rollier is reported to have described the POCL line as key to Clermont-Ferrand’s continued attractiveness to the tyre maker.

Mileage, grip a focus for latest ContiMilestone

Continental has unveiled a new motorcycle tyre for the custom and cruiser sector, the ContiMilestone 2012 Mileage Plus. This new version of the ContiMilestone is said to offer a new for 2012 compound that, combined with deep tread, delivers even more mileage without compromising levels of grip; silicone technology has been used in the new compound, and Continental says this guarantees good wet grip without reducing mileage. Tread wear is also reduced through the tyre’s breaker construction – the tyre maker states that it ensures even pressure in the contact area.

Dunlop’s fastest-fitting success in Dubai

The battle of the supercars in the Dunlop Dubai 24 hour race is made possible by the frenetic activities of tyre-fitters in the pit lane, which the headline sponsor and tyre supplier calls “the world’s busiest fast fit centre”. During the 24 hour race, the Dunlop team fitted over 3500 racing tyres. At peak times, during the opening stages of the race when all the cars were competing, the team was fitting, inflating and balancing a Dunlop tyre every 15 seconds.

Toyo Tires to support Robby Gordon in 2012 Dakar

Toyo Tires will fit its Open Country M/T-R tyres to Robby Gordon’s Team SPEED in the 2012 Dakar. Two of Robby Gordon’s specially built Hummer H3 racers will compete for the overall win; defending 2011 Dakar winner, Nasser Al-Attiyah joins the team in the #300 Qatar/Toyo Tires Hummer H3 while Gordon will drive his bright orange #303 SPEED Energy/Toyo Tires entry. Past off-road racing champions Gordon and Toyo Tires first competed in the Dakar in 2006. “Toyo Tires and I have worked hard over the years to develop a tyre combination that is right for the HUMMER,” said Gordon.

Stema wins tyre plant upgrade contract

A collaboration between Italian engineering company Stema Service Srl and Control Techniques Italy has resulted in a substantial contract with one of Italy’s “leading tyre manufacturing groups.” According to the companies, the project, with Unidrive SP AC drives used throughout, has produced energy savings, increased production and resulted in a reduction in maintenance costs.

Pirelli ends its first season in Formula One for 20 years at Interlagos this weekend, with 71 anticlockwise laps, an uphill start-finish straight that increases the risk of the anti-stall mechanism kicking in at the start and varying elevation in Brazil.
