OEM Wheel Maker Names New President

Asahi Tec, manufacturer or OEM aluminium wheels and other automotive parts and systems, has appointed a new president and co-CEO. Hideo Ishii takes on these roles, as well as that of director and representative executive officer, following the company’s general shareholders meeting on June 28.

Mr. Ishii will be responsible for Asahi Tec’s Metal Forming Group and Diversified Business Group, and will act as co-CEO alongside Timothy D. Leuliette, who also serves as co-chairman of the company with Shoichiro Irimajiri. Mr. Irimajiri had been serving as president, co-CEO and representative executive officer, and is resigning from these posts to focus on the role of director and co-chairman of the company.

“Asahi Tec’s goal is to create a strong, globally competitive company that understands and supports global markets, cultures and customers to deliver leading-edge products worldwide,” said Irimajiri. “In his role as president and co-CEO, Hideo Ishii will play a key role in developing and executing the initiatives and strategies that will help realise that goal.”

Omega 3000 Extruder

Marangoni Retreading Systems has presented the Omega 3000, the latest version of its extruder for high quality hot retreading. Over the last few years the hot retreaded tyre market has become increasingly focused on the quality of the end product. In the building of retreaded tyres with hot retreading technology, quality is obtained by using compounds that are increasingly similar to new tyres and by applying the materials with precision, in terms of both quantity and distribution.
That’s why medium-sized retreading firms (producing 60-80 tyres per day) require a machine able to extrude “difficult” compounds, which is rapid, dependable, accurate and can be used on a wide range of tyre sizes.
Marangoni Tread introduced a modern extruder, the Omega, designed for the hot retreading market in 2003. Since then, the Omega has been continually updated in order to meet the needs of retreading firms and has become well established on the main European markets: France, Spain, UK and Italy.

Marangoni Tread has now produced the Omega 3000, considerably improved in many ways with respect to the first version. Updates include:
– Precision: the previous circumference and tyre profile measuring device has been replaced with a laser technology instrument.
– Rapid and simple use: software improvements have made it possible to increase process automation and to make machine operation more user friendly;
– Extrudable tyre size range: the previous 15-24 inch range has been widened to the new 13-25 inch range;
– Throughput: even when extruding “difficult” compounds, there is no reduction in machine throughput.

Pirelli Chairman Says Sale Proceeds to Go Back Into ‘Core Businesses’

(Akron/Tire Review) After months of wrangling and speculation, Pirelli SpA finally sold off its stake in struggling Telecom Italia SpA, vowing to reinvest part of the proceeds into its “core businesses.” In the deal announced Saturday, Pirelli and Benetton units Sintonia SA and Sintonia SpA are selling holding company Olimpia SpA, which owns an 18% share of Telecom Italia, to a group of investors headed by Spain’s Telefonica SA.

Dunlop GP Racer Wins Magazine Tyre Test

Dunlop, fresh from victory in the opening two rounds of the 2007 British Superbike Championship, scored another win in an independent test of superbike tyres. The test was conducted by leading UK monthly magazine ‘Superbike’, who tested the leading fast-road and track day tyres on the market. All the tyres tested were road-legal but aimed at the fast-growing track day market, where owners take road bikes onto race tracks where they can exploit the full-potential of their bikes.

‘Superbike’ tested eight different tyre brands at the demanding Albacete circuit in Spain. The magazine mixed subjective feedback with measured lap times, using three expert riders and a Suzuki GSX-R1000 superbike. The Dunlop GP Racer was declared equal first in the test, and also secured the fastest average lap time of the eight contenders. Superbike’s Jon Pearson declared the Dunlop-shod bike to “feel planted at full lean, especially on the faster, longer corners.”

Pirelli Moves to Replace Telecom Italia Chairman

While Pirelli’s tyremaking business continues from success to success the controversy surrounding the company’s ill-fated involvement in Telecom Italia continues. The company’s dissatisfaction with various aspects of Telecom Italia’s strategy were made manifest on April 4 when Olimpia, the company jointly set up by Pirelli and the Benetton family to control Telecom Italia, excluded the communication group’s chairman Guido Rossi from a list of proposed new board members. However this move, tantamount to sacking Rossi, was immediately contested by two other prominent Telecom Italia shareholders on the grounds that the decision violated consultation agreements.

Rossi, a well-known corporate lawyer, has acted in the capacity of chairman since last September, taking on the role following the resignation of Marco Tronchetti after he publicly clashed with Italian prime minister Romano Prodi, a close associate of Rossi. However the boot is now on the other foot, with Tronchetti, as chairman of the Pirelli group, striving to oust his successor at Telecom Italia.

CTO Investigates Tyres

Botwana’s Central Transport Organisation (CTO) is investigating suggestions that some governmental departments bought retreads from Spain thinking they were new tyres. The CTO says it has information to confirm that the tyres in question are not retreads.

However, Botswana’s national press agency (BOPA) has released a confusing report on the subject. “The word retread was used to conform to the European Environmental Standards meaning that the tyre is recyclable,” CTO general manager, Lt. Colonel Moakofhi Modisanyane is quoted as saying in response to a BOPA enquiry.

Love and Lottery Tickets

The British, it seems, have two passions: romance and gambling. A survey commissioned by the German tyremaker Fulda shows that 66 per cent of British people claim that they would take their partner out for a romantic dinner if they were given an extra £50 to spend a year, while 11 per cent said they would spend the extra money on lottery tickets.

Auto Parts Maker Announces Closure

The bankrupt US automotive parts manufacturer Delphi Corp. announced on February 22 that it plans to close its Puerto Real factory in Cadiz, southern Spain. A union representing employees at the plant has stated that as many as 1,650 workers will be affected by this closure.

Lodge Coaches First to Fit Michelin X Coach XD

Chelmsford-based Lodge Coaches has become the first operator in the UK to fit Michelin’s new X Coach tyres to a vehicle in its fleet. The X Coach 295/80 R22.5 X Coach XD tyres incorporate elements of Michelin Durable Technologies – the name given to three new patented technologies which have allowed Michelin to develop a self-regenerating tread pattern and to make advances in tyre architecture.

And Finally….Italy’s Homeless Have Their Own ‘Michelin Guide’

(Akron/Tire Review – Reuters) It looks like a guidebook, with its glossy pages, fold-out maps, and tips on where to eat and sleep in Rome. The only difference is that its readers are homeless. The new edition of what its authors have dubbed a “Michelin Guide for the Poor” was presented on Jan. 10 as promoters warned that the ranks of the have-nots in Italy’s capital were growing.

2007 No Easier for Bridgestone Teams – Trulli

Toyota Formula One driver Jarno Trulli believes that Bridgestone’s existing tyre partners will not have an advantage over their competitors in 2007. The sport’s leading teams, including McLaren and Renault, have been compelled to switch to the Japanese supplier following Michelin’s F1 departure at the end of the 2006 season, but 32-year-old Trulli insists that the new 2007 ‘control’ tyre is a vastly different animal to Bridgestone’s 2006 equivalent.

Thumbs Up to Bridgestone

Toyota F1 driver Ralf Schumacher, brother of retired world champion Michael, has voiced his approval of the new 2007 Bridgestone tyres after testing at Spain’s Circuit de Catalunya.

Following Michelin’s withdrawal from Formula One all drivers will compete on Bridgestone tyres as of next year, and despite concerns raised by other drivers Schumacher stated that he was pleased with the tyres.

The Prost Legend, Take Two

Between 1985 and 1993, legendary French driver Alain Prost won four Formula One World Championships, (all of them using Goodyear tyres). Thirteen years later, the Prost name tops an international podium again with Alain’s son, Nicolas Prost, winning the Formula Three event at Montmelo, Spain last weekend, the penultimate round of the Spanish F3 Championship. Prost used Birmingham-built Dunlop tyres to carry him to this landmark first win.

Bridgestone Opens European Logistics Centre in Zeebrugge

With the completion of expansion work at the Zeebrugge warehouse, Bridgestone has opened its new 87,500 square metre European Logistics Centre (ELC North). The 9 November inauguration was conducted by Mr Takashi Urano, chairman, CEO and president of Bridgestone Europe, Mr Yves Kerstens, vice president logistics and supply chain management, Bridgestone Europe and Mr Joachim Coens, chairman – managing director, Zeebrugge Port Authority.

Bridgestone Finalises F1 Contracts

Bridgestone Motorsport has finalised contracts for the provision of Bridgestone Potenza Formula One tyres with the Renault F1 Team, Team McLaren Mercedes, Honda Racing F1 Team, BMW Sauber F1 Team, Red Bull Racing and Scuderia Toro Rosso. The six new teams are expected to run on Bridgestone F1 tyres for the first time at the Barcelona winter test in Spain, provisionally scheduled for 28-30 November, 2006.

After six years of competitive tyre supply, the FIA Formula One World Championship is about to enter a new era with Bridgestone as the sole supplier of F1 tyres from 2007 to 2010. The new teams will be joining Bridgestone’s current stable of five teams: Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro, Panasonic Toyota Racing, WilliamsF1 Team, Spyker MF1 Team and Super Aguri F1 Team.
