Tests: Bad Aftermarket Exhausts Markedly Increase Pollution

Shocking results from one of Europe’s foremost vehicle emissions testing labs have revealed shortcomings in some (legal) replacement exhaust systems. The results show 20 times the level of harmful Nitrogen Dioxide and 50 per cent higher levels of damaging Hydrocarbons being emitted by non Type-approved exhausts, leading to calls from manufacturers such as Klarius for type approval to become mandatory in the UK, as it already is in Europe.

Extensive testing by Longbridge-based Emission Test Facility UK has called the quality of construction, design and materials used in exhaust pipe make-up into question. Emission Test Facility UK’s directors and testers, Tim Colgan and Graham Downing, tested a selection of non Type-approved exhaust systems against an original manufacturers unit and a fully Type-approved replacement model.

Pirelli “Delighted” With Opening GP3 Round

Pirelli’s return to open wheel racing after an almost two-decade absence got underway last weekend with the opening rounds of the inaugural GP3 series at Spain’s Circuit de Catalunya. A full grid of 30 GP3 cars lined up for the opening two races, held on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning, all fitted with Pirelli’s newly developed PZero 13-inch control tyres. Prior to each weekend’s races a soft, medium or hard compound tyre must be nominated for use by all drives, and on the weekend of May 8 and 9 – as will commonly be the case this year – the medium compound was employed.

Official – Pirelli Submitting F1 Tyre Supply Bid

On April 29 Pirelli officially confirmed it is to present a technical and commercial offer for the supply of tyres to all the teams in the Formula One world championship. The company says it plans to present the bid to FIA and FOA (Formula One Administration Limited) by 9 May, the date of the Formula One Grand Prix in Spain.

Jerez Circuit’s “Diverse Corner Layout” a Challenge for Bridgestone MotoGP Tyre

Following the postponement of the Japanese Grand Prix (thanks to a certain Icelandic volcano), Bridgestone is heading back to the scene of its pre-season testing in Jerez, Spain this weekend for the second round of the 2010 MotoGP Championship. The Jerez circuit is “a good test circuit because of the diversity of the corner layout”, says Tohru Ubukata, manager of Bridgestone’s Motorcycle Tyre Development Department. “This means that we require a tyre with a very balanced character to provide good handling from low speed to high speed and from flat corners through changes in elevation,” Ubukata continues.

Bridgestone Explains 2010 MotoGP Allocation Process

The second season of Bridgestone’s sole tyre supply to MotoGP got underway at the Grand Prix of Qatar on April 11. On the championship’s official Dorna Sports’ operated website, chief coordinator of the Bridgestone MotoGP project, Thomas Scholz, has given an explanation of the new tyre allocation process in use this season.

Delticom Reports 72% Profit Growth in 2009

German based online tyre retailer Delticom, owner of the mytyres.co.uk portal, has reported revenues of 311.3 million euros in the 2009 financial year, a year-on-year increase of 20.2 per cent. During the reporting period the company’s EBIT increased 78.8 per cent to 29.4 million euros, and Delticom notes that, in relation to revenues, this corresponds to an EBIT margin of 9.4 per cent – exceeding the forecast of 7 per cent. Consolidated net income for 2009 was 20.2 million euros or 1.71 per euro share, up 72.4 per cent from the previous year.

UK Brokerage Chosen for Spain, Portugal Tyre Warranties

UK insurance broker Garratts has landed a 700,000 euro contract to arrange tyre warranties for car dealers in Spain and Portugal. The Preston based broker was appointed by Spanish broker Sanz & Domecq to provide an annual warranty policy covering 411 workshops and 180 garages across the two countries.

February EU New Car Registrations Up 3%

European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association figures show that new car registrations over all European Union countries (excluding Cyprus and Malta, whose data was “unavailable”) rose 3 per cent in February 2010, compared with February 2009. A total of 974,346 new cars were registered in the covered territories. Compared to figures at the same stage of 2009 the small rise in February registrations means that there are 7.9 per cent more new cars on the EU’s roads in 2010. However, given that 2009 was a year in which financial turmoil prevailed, the evidence suggests that this rise has only partially eaten into the drop experienced from 2008; compared to figures recorded in that year, February 2010 has seen 15 per cent fewer registrations and 16 per cent fewer in cumulative year-to-date numbers. Spain, the UK, Italy and France all registered significant increases, while Germany, Romania, Hungary and Poland saw dramatic drops. In the same region, Renault Group, PSA Group (Peugeot and Citroen), Nissan and Kia were the manufacturers with notable increases, while Toyota Group saw a significant drop.

Conti: High Performance Segment Offers Attractive Growth Opportunities

Despite the continuing automotive industry downturn, Continental says it sees attractive opportunities in the high performance tyre market segment. Continental AG board member and head of the company’s Car Tyre Division, Nikolai Setzer, says new technologies and investment in research and development will aid Conti’s growth in this particular market. He also believes the company can boost its replacement market business through further success with OEM customers.

Hayes Lemmerz. Receives “A” Rating From Audi

Hayes Lemmerz International has announced that its Hayes Lemmerz Holding GmbH organisation in Germany has received an “A” level performance rating from Audi Ingolstadt for supplier project development and project engineering in connection with steel wheels produced for Audi at the wheel manufacturer’s plants in Manresa, Spain and Manisa, Turkey.

Apollo Completes Vehicle Dynamics Workshop in Chennai

Indian manufacturer Apollo Tyres has completed its second Vehicle Dynamics Workshop in the southern Indian city of Chennai. Apollo began the Workshop two years ago as a biannual platform for auto and tyre-makers, tyre testing authorities and homologation bodies to discuss vehicle dynamics, its facets, complexities, issues being faced and ways and means of addressing them. The company says the Workshop comes at a time when regulations across the world are being tightened, and both car and tyre makers are actively seeking ways to bring out products, which meet customer needs of safety, fuel efficiency, price and comfort while applying environmentally safe options.

Online Retailer Popgom Reports 7.3 Million Euro Turnover

Online tyre retailer Popgom was founded in France in 2008 by Christophe Tesseraud, previously European CIO at Michelin. The tyre major is a minority (approximately one-third) shareholder in the business behind Popgom, Tyredating SAS, and today the firm operates retail tyre portals in France, Spain and Germany. Company representatives claim that a site catering to the UK market will be established in 2010.

Conti Trade to Revise Customer Communications Strategy

Marketing agency Wunderman has reportedly been given the task of revising the Europe-wide customer relationship management and communications strategy for Conti Trade, the organisation in charge of Continental’s retail activities in much of Europe. In 2009 Conti Trade reported achieving a turnover of more than 700 million euros, with its Conti-Trade-Network covering more than a thousand service stations in Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Germany, Ireland, Norway, Poland, Slovakia, Spain and Switzerland.

Enrique Guix Joins Pelmar as Area Sales Director

Pelmar Engineering Ltd. has appointed Enrique Guix as area sales director for the Scandinavia, Spain, Portugal and South American markets. Guix worked for rubber machinery firm Gumix, S.A. in Barcelona, Spain for more than 17 years before Farrel Corp. acquired selected assets from Gumix, S.A. in 2006 in order to establish Farrel Spain, S.L., where Guix worked until the end of 2009.
