Conti Breaks Ground on Asia Headquarters & Engineering Centre

On January 16 Continental AG held an official groundbreaking ceremony for its new Continental Asia Headquarters and dedicated Engineering Center in China. The new facility was first announced in July 2007 and Continental reports that a total of 60 million euros will be invested into the project, located in the Yangpu District of Shanghai. When complete the facility will encompass a total floor space of approximately 14,000 square metres, including a 14-floor office building. From May 2009 onwards nearly 900 Continental Group employees from the company’s Tire, Automotive and ContiTech divisions will be housed in the new premises. The site will also house one of Conti’s two key Engineering Center operations, supporting the design and testing of certain electronic products. Another facility with large-scale equipment for bench testing will be located in Shanghai’s Jiading District.

Lionax to Fit TPMS to Shanghai Buses

Lionax, the first Chinese company listed on Euronext, announced today that it had signed a contract with Shanghai Tuofeng Auto Parts Company to jointly supply Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS) for buses in Shanghai. Shanghai is the biggest city in China with a population of over 18 million. James Yang, Lionax CEO said: “It is a great honour to be able to supply TPMS for Shanghai, which is the leading city in China for commerce and the automotive industry. We are confident that this LIONAX product will be used in other Chinese cities in the near future.”

Geert Roelens Named Bekaert Group Executive VP

Bekaert’s board of directors have appointed Geert Roelens as Group Executive Vice President and member of the Bekaert Group Executive Committee, effective 1 March 2008. He will succeed Marc Vandecasteele, Group Executive Vice President AWP Steelcord, who will retire after more than 36 years of service. In his new position, Geert Roelens will be responsible for managing and developing Bekaert’s steel cord activities on a global level. Geert Roelens is currently General Manager steel cord products Asia, based in Shanghai (China). He joined Bekaert in 1988 and gained extensive international business experience in various management assignments in Belgium, the United States, Indonesia and China.

Reifen China 2008

After a successful debut in 2007, Reifen China returns to Shanghai between December 4 and 6, 2008. Once again the exhibition will be held at the Shanghai New International Exhibition Center and organized by a partnership between the globally renowned Messe Essen GmbH, Germany, and the China United Rubber (Group) Corporation (CURC).

CITExpo 2008

CITExpo has developed strongly in the six years since it was first held in Shanghai. As one of the leading tyre exhibitions in Asia, the CITExpo exhibition attracted almost 7,000 visitors in 2007, almost half from overseas. The organisers of the show are confident to increase these numbers even further with the 2008 event.

In 2008 CITExpo will take place between September 17 and 19, again at the Shanghai Everbright Convention & Exhibition Center.

Tyre Major Supplier US Zinc Sold

Aluminium and alloy products manufacturer Aleris International has agreed to sell its zinc business, which operates under the name US Zinc, to affiliates of Brazil’s Votorantim Metais Ltda. for US$295 million, with certain adjustments for working capital and other items. Closure of the transaction is subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions.

US Zinc is a supplier to a number of companies within the tyre industry, including tyre majors Goodyear, Bridgestone and Michelin. Amongst other items the company produces value-added zinc products, including zinc oxide, which is utilised in the vulcanisation of rubber products. US Zinc operates six zinc facilities in the United States and a newly built zinc oxide facility in China, located outside of Shanghai.

Automechanika Shanghai Home to 1,200 Exhibitors

With only a week to go before Automechanika Shanghai gets under way, more than 1,200 exhibitors from 23 countries & regions are confirmed for the show being held at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre. National pavilions from Germany, Italy, Korea and Taiwan will also be a feature of this year’s exhibition. In line with the profile of the global Automechanika brand, products on display at Automechanika Shanghai will include vehicle components, accessories and equipment for automotive repair and maintenance. The full spectrum of the OE and aftermarket will be represented, from budget to high-end offerings.

Alongside the exhibition is a comprehensive programme of special events, including the Automechanika Academy on December 5 – a series of eight lectures by leading auto industry professionals and academics from Chinese universities. All sessions will be conducted in both English and Chinese, and are open free-of-charge to all fair attendees.

First Reifen China Attracts Over 5800 Visitors

The organisers of the first Reifen China exhibition have published visitor attendance and exhibitor numbers from the inaugural “Asian Essen Show.” A total of 5812 visitors from 41 countries passed through the show between 14 and 16 November. Of these, 16 per cent were described as overseas visitors. 88 exhibitors from 13 nations took stands in Shanghai, with the vast majority (68 per cent) directly from the tyre, casing and tube business. 16 per cent of exhibits represented press, publishing and associations; while 4 per cent originated from the equipment and vulcanisation sectors.

Pirelli Negotiating Share Buyback

(Tire Review) Company chairman Marco Tronchetti Provera confirmed that Pirelli SpA is in talks to repurchase a 39 per cent stake in its tyre unit. Tronchetti Provera made the statement in Shanghai on November 30, where Pirelli launched its 2008 Pirelli Calendar. Pirelli sold the 39 per cent stake in Pirelli Tyre to a group of banks in July 2006 for 740 million euros. The original plan was to take that share public with an IPO. “We are very confident that there will be an agreement,” Tronchetti Provera told media in Shanghai, but he added that negotiations could take months.

New Pirelli Calender – “Pearls of the Orient”

The new Pirelli calender 2008 will show “The Pearls of the Orient“ at its official presentation at the Shangri-La hotel in Shanghai tomorrow. It will be the first calender presentation ever to take place in Asia. In doing so Pirelli not only highlights the fact that Asia is becoming increasingly important to the Italian corporation, but also points out Pirelli’s ambitious goals with regard to the Asian markets.

Tire Technology Expo 2008 to be Largest Ever

The organisers of the Tire Technology Expo 2008 are confident that next year’s show will be the largest yet and boast its best ever conference programme and speaker line-up. Held between February 19 and 21, 2008 at the Köln Messe exhibition centre in Germany, the exhibition is, despite its location, organised by Surrey’s own UKIP Media & Events, organisers of the Testing Expo China event held alongside CITExpo in Shanghai.

Next year’s Tire Technology Expo will host more than 140 exhibitors and therefore floor space has been increased, and those attending the show will also be able to enjoy the free gala dinner and Tire Technology International Awards for Innovation and Excellence presentation held on the evening of February 20.

The Tire Technology International Awards for Innovation and Excellence are being judged by an international panel of renowned tyre industry experts and their criteria reflects the true scope of the products and equipment that will be on show at Tire Technology Expo 2008, with categories comprising:-

Chinese Star Set for Pirelli Calendar

(Akron/Tire Review) According to Reuters, Pirelli has selected Chinese movie star Maggie Cheung as the lead model for its upcoming 2008 Pirelli Calendar, which will be shot entirely in Shanghai. Fashion photographer Patrick Demarchelier will photograph Cheung and 10 other women for the 35th edition of the calendar, which comes out Nov. 29 – days after the formal opening of Pirelli’s new tyre plant in Yanzhou.

Full House at CITExpo

The organisers of this year’s CITExpo in Shanghai, Reliable International Exhibition Services, have announced a full house. Although six weeks still remain before the doors open on September 12, every last piece of exhibition space has been booked and allocated. This means that visitors will have the widest possible range of companies and products to become acquainted with during their time at Asia’s largest tyre show.

Tianyee Tire Company develops leak-proof tyre

(Rubber Asia) Shanghai Tianyee Tire has effected a revolution in leak-proof tyre technology by developing the Tianyee Tyre, a Chinese version of safety tyre which can replace run-flats.

The technology involved is characterised by a 2-3 mm thick layer of synthetic rubber, known as memory polymer, coated on the inside wall of an ordinary tyre. Once a foreign object pierces the tyre, the memory polymer coating will envelop it entirely so that the tyre will not leak. When the foreign object is removed from the tyre, the memory polymer coating will automatically block the hole. As a semi-solid layer, the memory polymer coating helps the punctured tyre remain leak-proof at 20- 100 ° C. Shanghai Tianyee Tire recently showed off the unique properties of the tyre at the 4th China International Automobile & Modified Car Show.

Bridgestone Confirms F1 Tyre Choices

Following three days of testing at Belgium’s recently reconfigured Spa-Francorchamps circuit Bridgestone has deemed the time right to reveal the tyre compounds to be used by competitors for the final races of the 2007 season.

“Last week’s (July 10-12) test at Spa provided the final pieces of information we needed before we could confirm our choices of Bridgestone Potenza compound for the remainder of the season,” said Kees van de Grint, Bridgestone Motorsport head of Track Engineering Operations.

The usual soft and medium compounds will be put into play at the Italian, Belgian and Japanese Grands Prix, while the race in Shanghai will see the use of medium and hard compound tyres. At the season finale in Brazil Bridgestone has opted to make use of the soft and super soft tyres.
