Conti Invests in China Engineering Centre

Continental’s Automotive Systems Division has announced plans to build a dedicated engineering centre in China. On July 10 the company announced in Shanghai that 48 million euros have been earmarked for the project, which will be comprised of two facilities, an office site with design and test labs in the Yangpu District of Shanghai and a site containing large-scale equipment for bench testing. This second site will be an extension of the existing Continental Automotive Systems Shanghai facility in Jiading. The Yangpu site will also serve as the new Asia headquarters of Continental’s Automotive Systems, ContiTech and Passenger & Light Truck Tire divisions. Both facilities will be fully operational at the beginning of 2009 and provide employment for about 450 people, with the potential for this number to increase to 600 by 2011.

Challenge Bibendum Returns to China in 2007

Michelin’s Challenge Bibendum has been seeking solutions to the downside of motoring since 1998, and this year the event returns to the city that last played host to the Challenge in 2004 – Shanghai, China’s largest city and economic hub. This choice of venue is particularly appropriate given China’s growing global profile and its status as the world’s fastest growing vehicle market and vehicle producer, and a brand new location – the Automotive Exhibition Center, part of the Shanghai International Automobile City (SIAC) – has been selected to host the event between November 14 and 17.

As in previous years Challenge Bibendum will tackle pressing issues such as CO2 emissions, traffic congestion, vehicle fatalities and security of fuel supply. And while each of these problems has been present in the West for some time, the burgeoning economies of the world’s most populous countries, China and India, has created a new urgency for the development of alternatives to the status quo. Challenge Bibendum recongises that the change to more environmentally, economically and socially responsible vehicles and infrastructure will not occur organically, and thus entrepreneurs, industrialists and scientists from around the world have been invited to Shanghai to share their vision and present technical solutions to policy makers and the media.

Conti Names Appointments for New Business Units

As of 1st July Dr. Andreas Esser (48), who has headed Continental’s global Original Equipment Car Tires business for many years, will be responsible for the company’s newly-created business units Replacement Business Car Tires and Replacement Business Truck Tires Asia, based in Shanghai. At the same time Nikolai Setzer will take over as head of Continental’s Original Equipment Car Tires business. Dr. Esser previously held this position for over six years, whilst Nikolai Setzer was responsible for the OE Car Tires business in North and South America.

Creating the two new business units enables Continental to consolidate its growing activities in the car, MPV/light van and commercial vehicle tyre replacement business on Asia’s booming market, and Continental believes this move demonstrates the company’s interest in this continent. In his new position Dr. Esser will report directly to Manfred Wennemer, chairman of the board at Continental AG and head of the Car Tire division, as well as to Dr. Hans-Joachim Nikolin, who is a member of the board and is also responsible for the Commercial Vehicle Tire division. Dr. Esser headed the Original Equipment Car Tires business unit for over six years and under his leadership Continental became number one in Europe for OE sales and number three in North America.

Hankook’s T-station Enters China

Hankook has opened the first of its T-station centres outside of Korea. In mid-April the company announced the opening of a company-owned branch of Hankook’s one-stop automotive aftermarket service shop chain in the Chinese city of Shanghai, the first of many T-station centres the company plans to launch in China. Currently five distributors from various parts of the country have applied for franchises, and Hankook predicts that it will open 300 franchised centres in the next five years, as well as other company owned centres.

China is the first market outside of South Korea in which the T-station concept has been launched. The chain has been operating in its home market for almost three years, and at present some 100 franchised T-station centres – with equipment leased from Hankook – are operating within South Korea.

Toyo Displays at Auto Shanghai

Toyo Tire & Rubber are exhibiting at Auto Shanghai 2007, being held at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre between Sunday, April 22 and Saturday, April 28. At its exhibition booth the company is showing off the highly acclaimed Proxes Series, including the Proxes CT01, Proxes T1R, and the semi-racing tire Proxes R888. Toyo hopes this display will reinforce the company’s ‘brand image of high quality and uniqueness’.

Toyo hopes to further enhance the image of Toyo Tires in the Chinese market through this exhibition, and views Auto Shanghai 2007 as just the first in a series of local motor shows that the company plans to attend in China.

GITI Tire Named GM 2006 Supplier of the Year

(Akron/Tire Review) Shanghai, China-based GITI Tire Group was presented with the General Motors 2006 Supplier of the Year award on Mar.ch31 at in Orlando, Florida.

The 15th annual award recognizes supplier performance in quality, service, technology and price. This year, GM honoured 89 suppliers for outstanding performance in 2006.

Vic DeIorio, executive vice president of GITI Tire, accepted the award on behalf of GITI Tire. “This recognition by GM is truly motivating for us and we want to express our sincere gratitude for honouring us with this outstanding award,” said DeIorio.

Conti Misses Mark in China Sales

(Akron/Tire Review) Continental AG fell short of its stated 2006 sales goal in China, posting 230 million euro in sales, according to China Business News. Conti had established a goal of 350 million to 400 million euro in sales of its automotive systems products.

The sales figures do not reflect products made in China and exported, the report said.

Conti has a 50/50 joint venture with Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp., and has announced plans to build two technology centres in China this year.

2006 a Trademark Year for Shanghai Tyre & Rubber

Shanghai Tyre & Rubber Co. has been singled out as a company to watch amongst China’s many tyremakers by recently released statistical data from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), which indicates that the company is listed amongst the top filers in the world’s developing economies wishing to protect their intellectual property. Specific details regarding the number of trademark applications submitted by Shanghai Tyre & Rubber have not been released.

NR Prices See Another Jump

(Akron/Tire Review) Natural rubber prices continue to rise and dive, wreaking havoc among tiremakers and other rubber-based manufacturers. Rubber prices on the Shanghai Futures Exchange increased 2% on Jan. 31 to an estimated $2,800 per ton, according to Bloomberg News, its highest price since August.

Michelin China Reproached for Environmental Standards

China’s State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA) has reproached one of Michelin’s factories, the Shanghai Michelin Warrior Tire Company, for failing to alter its activities after violating environmental regulations. In 2006 SEPA accused the tyremaker, who entered the Chinese market in 1998, of failing to follow relevant eco-friendly regulations in China, and now SEPA says Michelin has failed to reach the required manufacturing and waste standards.

Fourth CITExpo Deemed Success

(Akron/Tire Review) The fourth annual China International Tire Expo (CITExpo) drew to a close 8 September, and was deemed a “record breaking success.” Held at the Shanghai Everbright Convention and Exhibition Center, the three-day event saw some 200 exhibitors showcase their latest products and technology in a 10,000-square-meter exhibition area.

Citexpo Organisers Hope to Repeat the Reifen Success

Last December the organisers of the China International Tire Expo (Citexpo), staged a successful tyre show with record breaking figures in terms of visitors and exhibitors. According to the organisers, there’s a good chance that at the next Citiexpo (in Shanghai this September) this success will be repeated. Wilko Fong and Joe Ho from the organising company explain why: During the Reifen exhibition in Germany – the world’s biggest tyre exhibition – they actively contacted potential exhibitors and have introduced themselves to potential visitors with their own stand in Essen. You may think that the Reifen show in Germany is impressesive with 470 exhibitors and 17,000 visitors – Citexpo has already reached a third of this with last year’s show.

Many of the conversations on the Shanghai Baolong Industries Company Limited stand at Essen concerned the rising costs of raw materials and the effect that this has had on Shanghai Baolong and its products; notably brass valves and wheel balancing weights.

Goodyear Says Asia Sales to Rise in 2006

Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. says it expects sales in Asia to rise 6 per cent this year compared with an 8.5 per cent increase in 2005, Asia Pacific President Pierre Cohade told Reuters. “We anticipate the industry in Asia to grow 5 per cent this year and we are aiming to gain 6 per cent,” Pierre Cohade said on the sidelines of an American Chamber of Commerce event in Shanghai. Cohade said the forecast was based on a mild slowdown in growth in the China market, one of its major growth drivers.
