NIRA Dynamics expands its cloud solutions

NIRA Dynamics, a firm known best in the tyre industry for its indirect TPMS systems, has announced plans to expands its cloud solution in order to “create new possibilities for tomorrow’s autonomous cars”. For an autonomous car to know what distance it must keep to the car in front of it, it needs information about the current road conditions. If the vehicle is also aware of the road surface quality, risks are reduced even further. That’s where NIRA Dynamics and the firm’s Road Surface Information software come in. This software combined with NIRA’s Cloud cloud-based solution are said to enable just that. And now, in cooperation with Infocar, the company is taking the next step in the rollout of the solution.

Solid increases range of ABS sensors

Solid Auto UK has added several ABS sensors to its braking product range for Japanese and Korean vehicles. In total, seven ABS sensors have been added to cover 26 vehicle applications. These new additions are for Honda Civic (2006-12), Hyundai Santa Fe (2001-05) and Nissan Navara (2001>) vehicles.

Car systems can be hacked, warns NCC Group

Some car infotainment systems are vulnerable to a hack attack that could put lives at risk. The vulnerability was exposed by NCC Group after it found a way to carry out attacks by sending data using digital audio broadcasting (DAB) radio signals.

Modern cars are more hackable than ever

Modern cars are in danger of being hacked by criminal gangs, motoring experts have warned once again. Possible motivations for hacking are said to include theft of information, extortion and even causing vehicles to crash.

Security vulnerabilities in connected cars and in TPMS/RFID systems have been identified before (see “Automotive suppliers, smart cars, intelligent tyres and safety concerns” in last February’s magazine and “Researchers Hack a Hole in TPMS” in the September 2010 issue of Tyres & Accessories), but now attention is turning to cars fitted with wireless networks and Internet. The fear is that these connections can be exploited by hackers with access and control a car’s systems, including braking and acceleration potentially being overriding remotely, according to security consultants.

Fleets to benefit from Pirelli’s Cyber Tyre technology

Pirelli has extended its Cyber Tyre technology to the commercial vehicle sector through the introduction of Cyber Fleet, an ‘intelligent’ tyre that uses an electronic sensor and computer system to provide drivers and fleet managers with up-to-the-minute data regarding the tyre’s condition and the vehicle’s geographical position. The new product was unveiled at the manufacturer’s recent Truck Safety Day in Italy.
