Kumho revamps V710, Adds LX Platinum

Kumho is making some improvements to its championship-winning Ecsta V710 and is adding eight more sizes to the tyre’s lineup. First introduced in 2004, the V710 is Kumho’s top-of-the-line DOT competition tyre. The tyre has won more than 75 SCCA Solo National Championships in the last four years, as well as dozens of divisional Club Racing championships, the company said.

“Even though the V710 has continued to fare well in competition and in independent comparison tests by magazines such as Grassroots Motorsports, we knew it was time for some changes,” said Rudy Consolacion, Kumho motorsports manager. “We raised the bar when we introduced the V710 three years ago, and with the changes we’re making we’ll raise the bar again.”

US Release for PCL Accura Mobile

PCL hopes to make further inroads into the US market with the unveiling of Accura Mobile – a brand new portable Nitrogen (N2) Tyre inflation cart. The company reports that customers at the 2007 SEMA show were eager to view this new product, which is scheduled for release on the American market at what the manufacturer calls a competitive price.

Featuring the same accuracy levels as the rest of PCL’s Accura range, Accura Mobile features an N2 “convert and purge” feature for air inflated tyres and a “top-up” for nitrogen inflated tyres. It can be used with either an N2 bottle or generator. With six hose outlets for multi tyre inflation it can provide high speed on site or off site inflation and is especially designed for US applications.

Kumho Close to US Tyre Plant Decision

(Akron/Tire Review) Kumho Tire Co. is indeed planning to build its first US tyre plant, and hopes to announce its location by the end of this year. Dr. Sae Chul Oh, Kumho’s president, revealed the plans at last week’s SEMA Show in Las Vegas. Company officials said that as many as five locations in Georgia and Alabama are being considered. The South Korean tyremaker is seeking a location that gives it the best access to US auto plants, a skilled labor force, optimum labor costs and ample access for workers and management. The plant will be based on Kumho’s modular Automated Production Unit technology, which it unveiled a few years ago in South Korea.

At the same time, Oh said, the company is also considering a plant for Europe. Oh said that for now only one will be built, and it appears the US is the first choice. A European plant would most likely be located in Eastern Europe.

TIA Tackling Issue of Look Alike Tyres

(Akron/Tire Review/sg) During the SEMA Show the Tire Industry Association (TIA) unveiled a new “policy resolution” about the industry’s growing concern over so-called “look-alike” tyres, products with tread patterns that allegedly mimic or are identical to popular major brand models. According to the TIA, most of the look-alike tyres released in the US are for commercial vehicles, though there have been some passenger and light truck/SUV tyres on the market.

The TIA has pledged to work with the Rubber Manufacturers Association in the sharing of information pertaining to the problem. “We are glad to work with manufacturers on this issue”, said Paul Hyatt, the TIA’s past president. “It only makes sense when you consider the insurance liability issues our members are faced with on a regular basis.” Roy Littlefield, TIA executive vice president, said: “It is apparent that import tyres have raised a whole host of issues in general, and look alike tyres specifically bring serious questions about quality and safety.”

CMA Launching New OTR Tyres at SEMA

(Akron/Tire Review) The SEMA Show will see the launch of new 33- and 35-inch radial OTR tires by China Manufacturers Alliance. The Double Coin 35/65R33 L-5 loader tyre and 24.00R35 E-4 haulage tyre are the latest additions. Company officials stated the new tyres have “uniquely aggressive tread patterns for long wear, a smooth ride and excellent traction, as well as an all-steel casing for puncture resistance and enhanced retreadability.” CMA said the 33-inch loader tyre comes with a 122/32nds of original tread depth while the 35-inch radial haulage tyre has an original tread depth of 86/32nds.

New Run-Flat From Yokohama

(Akron/Tire Review) Yokohama Tire Corporation will unveil its new Advan ZPS run-flat at this week’s SEMA Show. The first run-flat in the Advan line-up, the Advan ZPS can be driven up to 50 miles at 55 miles per hour after the loss of air, the company said. ZPS stands for Zero Pressure System, and the Advan ZPS will be available in 2008 in 13 sizes.

Kumho Launching New Luxury Touring Line

(Akron/Tire Review) Kumho Tire USA plans to launch a new luxury touring tyre at the upcoming SEMA Show. The Ecsta LX Platinum features an asymmetrical tread, three dimensional “waffle” sipes, and a jointless nylon cap, and comes with a 60,000-mile limited treadwear warranty, the company said. The tyre has a UTQG rating of 600 AA, and will be available in 36 H-, V- and W-rated sizes covering 14- through 19-inch wheel diameters.

The SEMA Show is again around the corner, taking place between October 30 and November 2 in the Las Vegas Convention Center. In attendance at SEMA in 2007 is Federal Tyre, who wishes to extend its hospitality to existing and new friends.

Don’t laugh, the world of tattoos and that of tyres are, unlikely as it may seem, coming together at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas. One of the most highly regarded female tattoo artists in the US is joining Dunlop Tire to deliver the ‘Maxxed Out Awards’ on October 31. NHTSA Administrator to Speak at TIA Breakfast

(Akron/Tire Review) NHSTA Deputy Administrator Jim Ports will be a featured speaker during TIA’s Breakfast With the President, set for Tuesday, Oct. 30, during the upcoming SEMA Show. The event will start at 6:45 a.m. at Caesars Palace.

“We are looking forward to the Deputy Administrator discussing the many NHTSA regulated issues that affect the tire industry,” said TIA Executive Vice President Roy Littlefield. “This is a tremendous opportunity to meet one-on-one with Ports. TRIB Sets Vegas Board Meeting

(Akron/Tire Review) Tire Retread & Repair Information Bureau (TRIB) plans to hold its Board of Directors Meeting on Monday, October 29, the day before the SEMA Show starts.

The meeting will run from 2 to 4 p.m. at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas; the specific meeting room will be announced later.

TRIB said its board meetings are open to guests and the tyre industry press.
