Johnson Controls has revised its range of Varta-branded CV replacement batteries to replicate all OE applications. Johnson Controls is the largest European supplier of OE batteries to the truck and bus industries. The range of Varta PROmotive CV batteries now provides virtually total coverage of the UK commercial vehicle parc, with capacities ranging from 140 – 225 Ah.
Heavy Duty batteries are rated 140 and 170 Ah, while Super Heavy Duty are offered with 180 or 225 Ah capacities. All four products use calcium-silver technology to provide reserves of power for high loads at high temperatures and longer service life than conventional lead acid battery technology.
Wilson McCurdy Haulage from Ballymena in Northern Ireland has recently become a fan of Michelin’s XDN2 Grip tyres after fitting a set to the drive axle of a 580 hp Scania 6×2 tractor unit. The Michelin rubber is just what Wilson McCurdy Haulage needs as the days become cooler towards the end of the year, as the XDN2 Grip offers increased traction in wet conditions and excellent performance on hard packed snow and icy surfaces.
The Scania operates at 44 tonnes with a Heil petrochemical tanker and had previously encountered a slight loss of traction when running empty on wet roads, particularly whilst negotiating roundabouts. “We need a powerful tractor unit as this vehicle operates in a very rural area, but the driver reported that in wet conditions the traction warning light would be flashing on and off repeatedly,” says Bill McCurdy, a partner in Wilson McCurdy Haulage.
Aldi is fitting Michelin A2 Energy tyres to all vehicles based at its southern distribution centre in Chelmsford, Essex, following a 12 month road test which demonstrated a fuel saving of 2.3 per cent. The trial saw a 38-tonne Scania tractor unit (X268 KON) fitted with Energy tyres, with fuel consumption measured on a weekly basis and compared against figures for the same vehicle over the previous 12 month period.
Scania has rejected MAN’s takeover offer. The news follows speculation and then confirmation that German truck and bus maker MAN launched an unsolicited bid worth 9.6 billion (£6.5 billion) for its Swedish rival Scania. Volkswagen and Investor, a Wallenberg family firm, each own major blocks of Scania shares and the Financial Times suggested Investor may reject the offer. The FT also hinted at possible counter bids from other firms, including Paccar. Swedish truck maker Scania says its board met on Sunday 17 September and “unanimously decided not to support the proposals” from MAN AG.
German truckmaker MAN has confirmed it is interested in taking over Swedish rival Scania. MAN said the rationale for a takeover – which would result in the creation of a European market leading company – was “compelling”. Analysts estimate that any potential deal might be worth as much as 12 billion euros, (£8.1 billion).
Dekk Partner recently invited its Nordic suppliers and customers for a winter adventure at Gol Mountain in Norway. It was an intensive week with more than 400 visitors, all experiencing the best of the Norwegian mountains. Temperatures of -22 degrees in the morning (peaking at 6 degrees during the day) meant there was always enough snow-covered roads, but conditions were bearable.
MAHA UK Limited reached a milestone in UK growth when it received its 500th order for a truck brake tester at the recent CV/AT Show. The sale of MAHA truck brake testers in the UK has grown from only 1 sold in 1997 when MAHA UK started trading, to more than 500 in the UK market today.
MAHA UK now claims the position of market leader when it comes to truck brake testers and has recently won the tender to supply brake testers to VOSA for roadside testing. MAHA is the preferred supplier to Scania worldwide and MAHA UK also supplies truck brake testers to all the leading truck manufactures and bus companies throughout the country. MAHA has even supplied a truck brake tester to a workshop in the Shetland Islands.
Commenting on the development Gus Gregory, managing director of MAHA UK said: “The growth of MAHA truck brake testers must prove we have the best product, backed up by a nationwide service department.”
The public bus company of Greece’s second largest city, Thessaloniki, is to equip more than 500 of its buses with Wabco’s Integrated Vehicle Tire Pressure Monitoring (IVTM) systems.
Scania have awarded MAHA the status of Preferred Supplier for the supply of truck testing and service equipment. Scania wanted a uniform standard of service and test equipment for all their workshops throughout the world, to ensure that the very high standards that they require from their dealers are achieved.
Truck manufacturer Scania (minority shareholder VW) and electronic systems specialist gedas (100 % owned by VW) will co-operate in order to connect the fleetpark management system FAS (Fleet Analysis System) and the logistic portal “logiweb”. The planned telematic solution will make far-reaching analysis of the condition of a truck – for example the tyre pressures – possible via the internet.
