Tyrexpo Asia Success

ECI International has announced record figures for the fifth edition of Tyrexpo Asia, which took place at the Singapore Expo Centre from 13-15 September, 2005. Just under 3,000 tyre industry specialists visited the exhibition, as did 100 exhibitors, occupying 5,000 sq.m of stand space and displaying a wide range of products including tyres, tubes, garage equipment, retreading materials and equipment as well as a variety of ancillary products and accessories. Overall Tyrexpo Asia 2005 achieved a growth rate of 20 per cent compared to the previous event in 2003.

Nokian Officially Opens Russian Factory

The official inauguration of Nokian Tyres’ new tyre plant will take place today in Vsevolozhsk, Russia. The plant is already in operation, and the first tyres were manufactured in June 2005. Invitations to the ceremony have been sent to Finnish and Russian high-ranking authorities, partners in the construction project, customers, media representatives and the company’s own personnel.

Supply Direct Installs UK’s First Robotic Wheel Aligner

Supply Direct has recently installed the UK’s first robotic wheel aligner. The Nussbaum manufactured ‘WAB01’ is one of less than 30 worldwide and is located in Hodgsons-Toyota in Newcastle, which opens in early October.

According to Supply Direct, the installation of robotic equipment is not only a turning point for the company but also a turning point for the UK motor industry. It has revolutionised wheel alignment, saving time for workshop engineers therefore providing customers with a much faster and accurate service, the company says.

Nokian i3 Aims At Volume Sector

Nokian has introduced a new tyre, aimed at small and family-sized cars. Called the i3, the tyre is T-rated and comes in 14″ and 15″ sizes, with a few 13″ sizes also available. Altogether there are 11 sizes, for aspect ratios of 70, 65 and 60 series.

Alcoa Offers to Buy $11 Million Stake in Russian Facility

Alcoa has announced that it has offered to purchase the remaining 18 per cent of the Belaya Kalitva (BKMPO) fabricated aluminium plant in Russia still held by shareholders following its acquisition from Rusal in January 2005.

Lay-offs Set at Amtel Plant in Russia

(Akron/Tire Review) All, apparently, is not that rosy with Amtel Holding, which recently unveiled its plans to integrate the Vredestein brand in Russia. A significant slowdown in sales in Russia has forced the company to begin laying off workers at its Krasnoyarsky, Russia, factory, and reducing output at the passenger and light truck tire plant by half.

Amtel Tells of Vredestein Plans in Russia

(Akron/Tire Review) As part of its introduction of the Vredestein brand to the Russian tyre market, Amtel-Vredestein Holding said that it would import some 30,000 Vredestein brand tyres from The Netherlands and produce another 15,000 Vredestein tyres at its plant in Kirovsk, Russia.

Next year, Amtel-Vredestein will import 200,000 tyres and produce about one million Vredestein branded tyres in Russia, the company said. Amtel has been reorganised as Amtel-Vredestein, 37 per cent of which is owned by Amtel Holdings Holland and 63 per cent by Amtel Exports, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Amtel Holdings Holland.

Amtel is Officially Selling Vredestein in Russia

Amtel has begun producing and selling Vredestein tyres in Russia following its acquisition of the Dutch company Vredestein Banden several months ago. The company plans to import around 30,000 tyres and produce another 15,000 under the brand at its Kirov plant this year.

It further expects to import 200,000 tyres in 2006 and to produce approximately 1 million at its Kirov location. The company makes 150 per cent more profit on tyres sold under the Dutch trademark than on its own brand.

Amtel owns the Voronezh, Kirov and Krasnoyarsk and Belaya Tserkov tyre plants, Khimvolokno of Kemerovo and the Volgograd Technical Hydrocarbon Plant all in its domestic market. It produced 14.39 million tyres in 2004 whilst Vredestein’s Dutch plant produces about 5 million tyres per year. It also has sites in India and Indonesia that produce tyres for agricultural use and an independent enterprise in Malaysia that makes bicycle tyres.

Nokian’s Strong Growth Continues

Net sales of Nokian Tyres plc were up by 17.8% to 295.4 million euros in the first half of the year (250.8 million euros in the corresponding period in 2004). Operating profit amounted to 46.1 million euros (32.8 million euros).

Cordiant Brand Launched in Cyprus

Following the first indications that the company would launch a new brand earlier this year, the Sibur Corporation has now officially launched the new “Cordiant” line. The launch took place at a media event on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus, where journalists had the opportunity to get some first impressions of what is supposed to be Sibur’s new flagship brand. Sibur expects Cordiant to lay the foundation stone for the future success of the new tyre holding company which is due to be founded by the end of this year. Sibur also plans to use its modified brand strategy to focus more closely on the European markets, with the first successful step having already been taken in Eastern Europe.

International Tyre Club Heads for Warsaw

The next International Tyre Club event will be held at the ultra-modern Warsaw Inter Continental Hotel between 29 – 31 March 2006. Recent ITC events have been held in Prague, Budapest and most recently, in Lisbon.

Hi-Q Appoints Chris Kisby as Director Retail Operations UK

Chris Kisby joins Hi-Q, the Goodyear Dunlop retail network, from his position as key account director within the company’s consumer business unit, where he has worked for three years. During this time, Mr Kisby focused on key accounts such as Kwik Fit Europe, ATS and Hi-Q Retail.

Amtel-Vredestein Secure Investment

Amtel has secured a sum of private equity capital totaling US $70 million (£40 million). Following its recent acquisition of Vredestein the company has arranged equity financing from two leading groups, Alfa Group and Temasek Holdings, representing both domestic and international investors.

Alcoa Restructures Passenger Car Rim Business

Alcoa is planning to develop a range of forged aluminium passenger car rims, which will be produced alongside the company’s forged truck products. The wheels will be produced at Alcoa’s Samara, Russia, plant and will also be made available for sale in the European market. At the same time the company is set to embark on a restructuring programme designed to improve efficiency, shedding five per cent of its total international workforce. This means up to 800 jobs in the company’s wheel business could be lost. The wheel restructuring programme is expected to cost the company between $65 and $70 million – roughly half of this will be down to severance costs.

Alcoa acquired the casted wheel business as part of the large purchase of competitor Reynolds in 1999. This acquisition saw the company take over factories in Italy (Ferrara), Venezuela and North America. However, Alcoa never really seemed happy with its casted aluminium passenger car rim strategy.
