Continental Eyes India and Russia

A report on the Bloomberg Business Week website suggests that Continental AG will decide this year on building car-tyre plants in India and Russia to tap those countries' growth while avoiding import restrictions. In an interview, Nikolai Setzer, head of Continental's car-tyre unit, said: "It's obvious that we need to have local production in India and Russia if we want to be a strong player there. We are still evaluating different concepts and ideas, but we do want to have a decision this year."

Continental Clarifies Tyre Labelling Report

Continental Tyre Group, the UK arm of tyre and automotive supplier Continental AG, has sought to clarify comments made on motoring website motortorque.com which criticised forthcoming tyre labelling laws. In an interview published on 4 May 2010 the website said UK managing director David Smith described the planned labelling system as “not worth the paper it’s printed on.”

However, Continental representatives said this was a misunderstanding of what was said: “In a response to a recent direct question regarding the upcoming EU label, the intention was to highlight the benefit to the consumer of the more encompassing tests carried out and published by a number of European motoring magazines and motoring organisations. It was also intended to highlight the consistent leading performance of the major tyre brands in these tests, regardless of which part of the world in which they are produced.”

Michelin Looks to Increasing Sales, Expects Demand Increase

Michelin has released its first quarter financial report with the figure of 3.9 billion euros in net sales (representing an increase of 12.2 per cent) riding high on its statement. The manufacturer has seen a decent return to favourable comparatives a year after the depth of the financial crisis dominated most balance sheets, though European original equipment truck sales were a notable exception, down 1.2 per cent (including figures for Russia and Turkey. In comparison, year-on-year change in the segment in all other regions was up, most spectacularly in South America (up 56.9 per cent) and Asia (up 24.2 per cent). The European passenger car and light truck OE segment was much stronger, with 30.2 per cent rises in net sales.

Nokian Preparing for Growth in 2010

The Western and Eastern Europe region grew in importance for Nokian Tyres throughout 2009. The Finnish tyre maker reports European sales accounted for 24 per cent of its total last year, up eight per cent from 2008. This percentage growth in sales occurred largely at the expense of those in Russia and the CIS, which last year made up only 20 per cent of Nokian’s total sales, as opposed to 34 per cent in 2008. Overall, the company reported decreased demand for its tyres in 2009, an occurrence it attributes to the financial crisis and lower vehicle sales. In its general overview of 2009, released April 8, 2010, the company confirmed that measures have been taken “to adjust production to reduced demand.”

Nexen Appoints Samsung Recruits as CEO and VP Sales

Nexen Tire has elected H.B. Lee as Nexen Tire vice chairman and CEO along with the appointment of Byung-Woo Lee as vice president sales division. Hyun-Bong Lee, the former CEO of Samsung Electronics, was elected as vice chairman and CEO in the meeting at the KOSPI 200 company’s recent annual shareholders meeting.

In spite of the economic downturn in 2009, last year Nexen Tire broke its all it records with sales of $760 million, 28 per cent up over 2008. According to the company, “this outstanding performance came from aggressive marketing strategy to US and European markets and uplifting brand power in Korean domestic markets.”

Marangoni Claims Leadership in Russian Retread Segment

Marangoni Retreading Systems reports that it is a strong position to capitalise on the initial recovery of the Russian truck market. The company reports that reliable estimates on the retreaded truck tyre sector, in the absence of official figures, show a market volume of around 150-200,000 tyres, half of which are retreaded locally and the other half imported, mainly from central and western Europe.

Marangoni Retreading Systems, which has been operating in the Russian market for over a decade, has made significant investments in developing important local retreaders, apparently achieving good results quickly.

What is April Fools’ Day?

According to Wikipedia, April Fools' Day or All Fools' Day is a day celebrated in many countries on April 1. The day is marked by the commission of hoaxes and other practical jokes of varying sophistication on friends, family members, enemies, and neighbors, or sending them on a fool's errand, the aim of which is to embarrass the gullible. Traditionally, in some countries, such as the UK, Australia, Canada and South Africa the jokes only last until noon, and someone who plays a trick after noon is called an "April Fool". Elsewhere, such as in France, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Russia, The Netherlands, Brazil, and the U.S., the jokes last all day. The earliest recorded association between April 1 and foolishness can be found in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales (1392). Many writers suggest that the restoration of January 1 as New Year's Day the 16th century was responsible for the creation of the holiday, but this theory does not explain earlier references.

SRT Reports 8.1 Million Tyres Produced in 2009

Sibur-Russian Tyres reports producing a total of 8.1 million tyres during 2009, including 5.4 million passenger car and light commercial vehicle tyres, 2.4 million commercial vehicle tyres and 300,000 other sorts of tyres (such as aviation and motorcycle tyres). The company plans to increase production by 14 per cent during 2010.

Foundation Stone Laid at Yokohama’s Russian Plant

On March 23 the governor of Russia’s Lipetsk Oblast region, Oleg Korolyov, participated in a stone laying ceremony for Yokohama’s new tyre factory in the Lipetsk special economic zone. The ceremony, also attended by Yokohama Rubber managing director Mr. Suzuki along with Japanese and Russian government officials. In his welcoming speech, Mr. Suzuki stated that “Russia has become one of the three largest markets for us, on par with the US and China.” He added that Yokohama looks forward to working together to establish the Yokohama R.P.Z. L.L.C facility.

Passenger Car Tyre Markets Show Strong Growth in Feb – Michelin

Michelin’s market data for February 2010 shows a marked strengthening of passenger car and light commercial vehicle sales to OEM customers in a number of key regions. The OE passenger car and light commercial vehicle tyre market grew 47.0 per cent year-on-year in Europe (including Turkey but excluding Russia), 54.4 per cent in North America and 49.9 per cent in China. This gives a year-to-date growth of 42.9 per cent, 77.6 per cent and 91.3 per cent for the three respective regions.

CGS Aiming to Lead Agro/Industrial Tyre Imports in Russia

Following yesterday’s announcement that the company is opening a Russian and CIS market office, CGS Tyres has stated its aim of becoming “In the long term we are aiming to become the leading importer to the Russian market and the Commonwealth of Independent States in the agricultural and industrial tyre segments,” Jozef Rúček, who will manage the new Moscow office, commented. General manager and chairman of the board of CGS Tyres, Jaroslav Čechura, explained the company’s strategy: “Recent developments at manufacturers of agricultural machinery and equipment in Russia – such as Claas, John Deere and the Same Deutz-Fahr Group – have brought increased interest in our products in the region. The Russian market is huge, and we view it as a great opportunity for further expansion.”

CGS Tyres Opens Moscow Office

CGS Tyres has increased its operations in the Russian market by opening a new representative office in Moscow. According to the company, the Russian presence enables a better coordination of CGS Tyres activities not only in Russia, but also in the Commonwealth of Independent States. “At the same time CGS Tyres’ Moscow office provides to our local business partners the same level of customized services that the company guarantees on other developed markets,” company representatives said in a statement. CGS Tyres reported aims to become the leading agricultural and industrial/construction tyre importer in the Russian market.

China Market Growth Three Times Global Average

An estimate given by Sumitomo Rubber Industries suggests that sales of tyres in China will increase at three times the global rate. Bloomberg reports company president Tetsuji Mino as saying sales will increase about ten per cent per annum from just under 150 million tyres in 2009, compared with a global growth of three per cent. “We are sure that China is the most promising market,” Mino said. “Car ownership is spreading from wealthy people to ordinary consumers.”

Pirelli – 20% More Capacity by end of 2011

During the company’s 2009 full financial year conference call on March 10, Pirelli Tyre CEO Dr. Francesco Gori discussed a number of plans for this and the coming year. “Our strategic guidelines for 2010 confirm our strategic positioning in line with our business plan,” he stated. “And the distinctive strategic features are focused on the strong and truly global brand that made us improve once more our position in the top consumer segments. It selected exposure in emerging markets with a focus on Latin America, where we are clearly number one, the Middle East, Africa and Asia. Our expectation for 2010 is to further improve our revenues in the industrial business by fully exploiting the potentials in those geographies.”

Conti’s Tyre Plant the Key to Brazilian Market

The Brazilian tyre market is one of the world’s largest and due to its growth has been counted amongst the most important emerging markets, the so-called BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India and China), for a number of years now. For the last five years German manufacturer Continental has produced tyres in Brazil and during this time – despite long-established and powerful competition – has built up a solid business there. While Continental sees itself as well positioned in Brazil’s replacement tyre market and already holds a four to eight per cent market share, when Tyres & Accessories visited Continental’s tyre factory in Camaçari, Brazil, we learned that the company now intends to further establish its deliveries to OEM customers.
