Kaluga chosen as site for Conti’s Russia plant

Detailed information of Continental’s planned new factory in Russia has been released, and this shows that instead of selecting a site in the Ivanovo region as speculated, the new plant will be located in Kaluga, some 170 kilometres southwest of Moscow. In a press statement released July 1, Nikolai Setzer, head of the company’s Passenger and Light Truck Tires division and Continental AG Executive Board member, shared that the Kaluga plant will focus on meeting Continental’s strategic goal of achieving above-average and profitable growth, particularly in emerging markets.

Intact 4300 enables up to 63-inch shearography

The latest EM/OTR sector product from Steinbichler Optotechnik is the Intact 4300 tyre shearography machine. This unit machine is designed for the non-destructive testing of giant OTR tyres with an inner diameter between 45 and 63-inches, a width of 550 to 1550 mm and a maximum weight of 7500 kilograms. This most recent addition to the Intact series can clearly detect non-visible separation in the bead, sidewall and tread area within 20 minutes, enabling the easy identification of areas where belt separation has occurred. The first Intact 4300 is already in service with Togliatti, Russia-based company Povolzhskaya Shinnaya Kompaniya, the German manufacturer reports.

Federal and Consor discuss plans for Italy

Federal Tyres and the Consor Tyre Group report benefitting from their first joint attendance as exhibitors at a trade fair. During Autopromotec 2011 in Bologna, Italy, the two companies held their annual Italian distributors’ meeting. The meeting’s key aim was to emphasise and reinforce the common goal of improving the Federal brand’s image in the Italian market through supplying quality tyres.

This even applies to the humble automotive exhaust and was the case in 1984 when Howard Warren and Charles Cotton established CES (UK) Ltd. Corghi looking to expand into Brazil and China

In pursuit of the Italian garage equipment brand’s international intentions, Corghi has released details of the development strategy the firm is pursuing. According to Corghi representatives, the plan centres on so-called BRIC markets (Brazil, Russia, India and China) as the main guideline for growth. And for this reason the company reports it is making “significant investment in both the manufacturing and commercial side” of the business, investments that are said to be “already starting to bear fruit.”

GITI aiming for 10% market share

GITI Tire has appointed Richard Lyons to the position of general manager Europe as part of a series of moves that sees the firm implement a new organisational structure for its European operations. The structure, which took effect 1 May 2011, has been established following the departure of Michael Andre in March. Andre previously held the role of marketing director for passenger car tyres Europe and was managing director of the company’s Giti Tire Germany GmbH Deutschland subsidiary. Hervé Richert, GITI’s executive director, international sales and marketing described the new-look team a “direct consequence of GITI Tire Europe’s growth of business over recent years.” Writing in a statement detailing the reshuffle, he explained that it also follows the company’s “clearly defined strategy of building on strong relationships with its partners and customers with a focus on key markets in Europe and emerging markets” such as CIS and Russia.

Cordiant OE on Russian Polo

Sibur-Russian Tyres reports it has begun OEM shipments of Cordiant brand tyres to the Volkswagen plant in Kaluga, some 100 miles southwest of Moscow. The tyres will be fitted as original equipment on Polo saloons built at the factory, with the first Cordiant equipped cars rolling off the production line in June. The Russian tyre maker anticipates delivering up to 100,000 Cordiant tyres for the Polo and other Volkswagen Group cars by the end of the year.

GT Group signs exhaust control systems deal with Russia’s GAZ

Peterlee, County Durham based engineering company GT Group intends to add some 200 new employees to its current workforce of 300 after securing £50 million contract to supply exhaust gas control system for Russian vehicle manufacturer GAZ Group. GT Group intends to boost output of its heavy-duty diesel engine exhaust gas control systems to 100,000 units per annum within three years.

Analysts: Bullish Pirelli meets expectations

During a recent roadshow with financial analysts Pirelli & C Spa chairman Marco Tronchetti Provera told the market watchers that the tyre industry is benefitting from an unprecedented combination of favourable conditions. Morgan Stanley analysts agreed, explaining that the Italian tyremaker’s upbeat comments support the bank’s thesis and “overweight” rating: “Pirelli remains an attractive second derivative play on booming premium car demand, offering unmatched premium tyre and emerging market exposure.”

Conti to commence Russian PCR manufacture in Q4 2013

Continental has confirmed news first reported last year on its intention to erect a new factory in Russia. Alexander Lührs, head of media and press relations for the German manufacturer’s Passenger & Light Truck Tires division, told Tyres & Accessories that approximately 200 million euros will be invested in a greenfield plant initially capable of producing four million passenger car tyres a year. Production is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2013, Lührs added.

‘Ambitious growth strategy’ paying off as Lanxess profits jump 60% in Q1

The year has started well for Lanxess. After achieving what it calls its “best-ever quarterly result in the first quarter,” the German specialty chemical company says it is on track to achieve EBITA pre-exceptionals in excess of one billion euros in 2011; during the first quarter its EBITA pre-exceptionals rose 38 per cent year-on-year to 322 million euros, with double-digit growth recorded in all its segments and regions. The company’s sales increased 29 per cent year-on-year in the three months to March 31, 2011 due to higher volumes and price increases that helped offset rising raw material costs. EBITDA margin pre exceptionals rose to 15.5 per cent in the first quarter from 14.4 per cent a year earlier and net profit increased 60 per cent year-on-year to 166 million euros.

Emotional involvement the aim of new Bridgestone Europe advertising

Towards the end of April television viewers in the UK and several other European countries were amongst the first to experience the latest corporate advertising campaign produced by Bridgestone Europe. These television commercials form part of a new multi-prong advertising approach that also involves print, billboard and web advertisements. Bridgestone Europe says the campaign, which was produced in close cooperation with Bridgestone Corporation, will also be used in Bridgestone markets outside of our region.

Reports: Thai tyre and rubber industry slowing after Japan earthquake

Thai news reports are warning that “over 30,000 workers in the rubber-based industry have been affected” following the earthquake/tsunami disaster that hit Japan recently. Quoting figures issued by the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), the reports cited FTI Rubber Based Industry Club President Dr Chayo Trangadisaikul as saying: “15 domestic car tyre manufacturers have reduced production capacity by 30 – 40 per cent and cut overtime operations; thereby, over 30,000 workers in the industry are affected.”

Eurotire Ukraine training centre opens its doors

Eurotire’s Ukraine training centre, located in Dnepropetrovsk, has opened its doors. According to the company, the Eurotire Training Center will act as an educational facility for Eurotire employees and customers alike. Training will include technical, safety, commercial, and industrial instruction. The aim of Eurotire’s training centre is said to be to further education in the mining industry regarding all OTR related matters. Jack James, a long-time OTR veteran and experienced OTR instructor, has been named director of the centre.

Improved core business gives Nokian a ‘flying start’ to 2011

The quarter one results released by Nokian Tyres plc on May 6 show the group’s net sales to have increased 57.3 per cent to 289.2 million euros in the three months to March 31, 2011 and profit up 211.1 per cent year-on-year to 62.4 million euros. For the rest of 2011, the Finnish tyre maker anticipates operating profit, which during the first quarter jumped 241.8 per cent year-on-year to 183.8 million euros, will “improve clearly” compared with 2010; this may be helped by a 30 per cent increase production capacity during the year, largely in its Russian plant. The challenge posed by raw material costs remains, however, and Nokian anticipates these will this year be 30 per cent higher than in 2010. To counter this, Nokian is preparing for “further tyre price increases during 2011.”
