MESNAC buys Wyko Tire Technology

Qingdao, China based tyre manufacturing equipment maker MESNAC Co. has taken a 100 per cent equity position in US firm Wyko Tire Technology. In its relatively short history MESNAC has rapidly grown to the number four position in its field and speaking to Tyres & Accessories in China at the end of November, company executives hinted that the next phase of growth would be both outside its native China and would include acquisitions such as the latest Wyko purchase. MESNAC has indicated it will retain the Wyko brand and continue to provide normal service and support to customers, with no disruption in business.

Research into China tyre label underway

At the Lanxess Rubber Day China, held in Beijing on 2 December, Jiang Jian from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology informed delegates that preparations for a Chinese tyre label are already underway. “With regard to potential guidelines for tyre labelling in China, we are comparing the stipulated standards with the present conditions. We have already made a start with research in this area.”

Mitsubishi to establish new subsidiary for tyre machinery

Japanese company Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) has announced plans to establish a new subsidiary that will take care of its industrial machinery business, including rubber and tyre machinery. This new, wholly MHI-owned company will come into being on 1 April, 2012 and be created by integrating MHI’s industrial machinery business, which is currently operated by the company’s Industrial Machinery Business, Technology & Solutions Division, and three existing MHI group companies, including MEC Engineering Service Co., Ltd. (MEC).

Bridgestone shows off airless tyre at Tokyo show

Michelin has its Tweel, Goodyear the lunar Spring Tire, and now Bridgestone has unveiled its own airless tyre at the Tokyo Motor Show. The Japanese manufacturer’s take on the airless concept employs a mesh of thermoplastic resin spokes that support the tyre’s tread. The spokes are positioned tangentially from the tyre’s centre and the outer tread layer is made from tyre rubber; all tread and inner components are produced using 100 per cent recyclable materials, Bridgestone states.

Getting workers back on the job our first priority, says Cooper

In a statement updating the progress of negotiations over its Findlay, Ohio factory, Cooper Tire & Rubber reports that the United Steelworkers union has rejected its offer to extend the recently expired worker’s contract. An extension of the contract that expired on October 31 would have allowed plant workers who are USW members to get back on the job as early as the weekend of 3-4 December and enable production to continue as usual while Cooper and the Union continue negotiations towards a new long-term contract. While Cooper’s statement did not specify the length of the extension sought, non-profit news magazine In These Times reports that Cooper wants to extend the current agreement by one year.

Green tyres 50% of Chinese total by 2020, projects Lanxess

In connection with its Rubber Day China, which takes place in Beijing on December 2, specialty chemicals company Lanxess has reported on a study it commissioned the Technical University of Munich to undertake. This study indicates that the proportion of ‘green tyres’ in China is likely to increase to up to 50 per cent of the entire tyre market by 2020. China, Lanxess notes, already accounts for a third of global tyre production; around 400 million passenger car tyres are produced there each year.

Casumina to construct new pcr plant

Vietnam’s Southern Rubber Industry Joint Stock Company, or Casumina, has reportedly signed a Memorandum of Understanding with a US partner and will erect a new passenger car tyre factory. Work on the new plant should begin before the end of the year and the project’s stated total cost is VND3.7 trillion (around £112 million), including an investment of some £19 million from the US partner. The factory is expected to enter operation late in 2012 and have an annual output of 1.5 million tyres per annum. Two thirds of the new factory’s output is said to be earmarked for the US market; other named export markets are Canada and Australia.

CZ Tire completes purchase of Hangzhou Zhongce share

The sale of China Enterprises Limited’s share in Hangzhou Zhongce Rubber Company to CZ Tire Holdings Limited for RMB600,000,000 or approximately US$94.41 million has been closed, China Enterprises reports.

Cooper Findlay deal rejected

Despite news to the contrary, Tire Review shares that union workers at Cooper Tire & Rubber’s hometown Findlay, Ohio, plant still do not have a new contract with the tyre maker.

New ETRMA stats show European retread recovery in 2010

In its recently released 2011 ‘European Tyre & Rubber Industry’ statistics, the European Tyre & Rubber Manufacturers Association states that retreading managed to stage an almost complete recovery in Europe during 2010. Quoting Europool figures, the ETRMA shares that after experiencing a 21 per cent decrease within the region from 2007 to 2009, with unit sales dropping from 5,800,000 to 4,561,000 during this time, in 2010 retread unit sales rose 22.9 per cent year-on-year to 5,605,000. The number of retreads sold within Europe last year is thus only 3.3 per cent lower than 2007 levels, the ETRMA notes.

Cooper, USW reach tentative Findlay agreement

Findlay, Ohio-based news source The Courier states that Cooper Tire & Rubber reached a tentative three-year labour agreement on 23 November with the representative chapter of the United Steelworkers union, Local 207L. No specific information has been disclosed about the agreement, which covers unionised workers at Cooper’s Findlay factory and succeeds the old agreement that expired on October 31. Local 207L members will meet on 26 November to hear details of the agreement and a vote on the deal will take place the following day.

Bridgestone announces North American off-road, retread price rises

Base prices for Bridgestone, Firestone and Continuum off-road tyres and Continuum pre-cure tread rubber and retreading materials are to increase by 15 per cent in the United States and ten per cent in Canada. Announcing the new pricing, which takes effect 1 January 2012, Bridgestone Americas Commercial Solutions president Kurt Danielson commented: “We are committed to providing our customers with products of the highest possible quality and value. While we make every effort to absorb rising costs, increases related to market conditions, supply pressures, global competition and manufacturing expenses have made these adjustments necessary at this time.”

Goodyear adds a plus, subtracts rolling resistance

You need to look carefully to spot the ‘+’ sitting alongside the familiar Marathon name, yet the addition of this symbol is said to represent a sizable decrease in rolling resistance and thus reduced vehicle operating costs. Goodyear has introduced its latest generation commercial vehicle tyre range, the Marathon +, and says rolling resistance in its new LHD II+ and LHS II+ drive and steer tyres is seven per cent lower than in their predecessors.

Reifen China 2011 opens

Reifen China 2011 opened its doors today to increased exhibitor numbers over the 2010 edition, with the exhibition's space records reportedly having been broken back in May. Exhibits appear to be mainly dominated by large and medium sized Chinese and Taiwan-based tyre manufacturers with the addition of relatively small tyremakers, wheel firms and equipment manufacturers also in attendance. Some well known names in attendance include: Hangzhou Zhongce Rubber Co., Ltd., Double Coin Holdings, Shandong Linglong, Cooper Chengshan Shangdong Co., Ltd., Nankang Rubber Tire Corp, Shandong Wanda Boto Tyre, Guizhou Tyre Co., Ltd and Shandong Hengfeng Rubber & Plastics Co., Ltd to name but a few.

Cooper, union negotiations ‘getting intense’

Unionised workers at Cooper Tire & Rubber’s Findlay plant in the US state of Ohio remain on the job, even as its leadership continues contract negotiations. Ohio-based industry publication Tire Review reports that workers represented by the United Steelworkers’ Local 207have been working for three weeks without a contract as the two sides continue negotiations – and these negotiations have been described as “getting intense.”
