No new future talks, workers angry at USW

Despite numerous reports that both sides were headed to a meeting with a federal mediator next week, it appears now that there will be no further negotiations between Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. and locked out USW workers at the tyre-maker’s Findlay, Ohio, plant, Tire Review reports. After both sides clearly stated that they would return to the bargaining table after the holidays and that a session with the mediator had been scheduled for 12 January, that supposed meeting was suddenly called off yesterday, with Cooper claiming that no such meeting was even scheduled.

Goodyear to webcast 2012 Global Auto conference presentation

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company has announced that it will webcast its presentation at the 2012 Deutsche Bank Global Auto Industry Conference in Detroit, Michigan, on 10 January. Darren R. Wells, executive vice president and chief financial officer, will provide a business overview and discuss the company’s strategies for approximately 40 minutes.

Chinese tyre makers lost share value in 2011

With China accounting for about 34 per cent of global rubber demand in 2011 and with demand for cars slowing last year in the People’ Republic, the varied economic climate is proving to be a challenging environment for the countries fast growing domestic tyre manufacturers.

According to China Daily and Bloomberg reports, China's economy is forecast to grow 8.5 per cent next year, the least in 11 years, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). Vehicle sales may rise by the least in 13 years in 2011, plunging from last year's record 32 per cent, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers reported.

Eldan introduces mining tyre recycling system

Eldan Recycling has developed tyre recycling equipment that enables owners to process whole car and truck tyres including super singles and even OTR and mining tyres. De-beading of the tyres is not required prior to processing. The company uses a modular approach, which covers all customer requirements on equipment to process at different levels down the “recycling road” including production of shreds, chips, granulate and powder – all having their own platform within recycling. The various standard plants are “multi-size”, which give the customer total control over the production of a various range of output sizes. By a simple and quick change of the screen combinations in the machines a different range of output sizes is produced.

Pirelli renews retread agreement with Vacu-Lug

Pirelli and Vacu-Lug have renewed the contract that means the Lincolnshire-based retreaded tyre manufacturer will continue as sole producer of the Pirelli Novateck range in hot and cold cure processes in the UK. The relationship between the two manufacturers dates back to April 2007 when a production agreement between the companies dictated that Vacu-Lug take over the machinery and moulds from Pirelli's own production facility in Burton-upon-Trent.

Conti promotes Seabra to Asia Pacific role

Continental has named the new executive vice-president for its replacement passenger and light truck tyres Asia Pacific business unit. Antonio Lopes de Seabra, formerly in charge of Continental Mabor in Portugal, takes over from Andreas Esser in the role and reports directly to Nikolai Setzer. Esser has taken over responsibility for Conti’s commercial vehicle tyres business unit, effective 1 January.

Triangle’s retreading operation gains green credentials

In December 2011 Triangle’s retreading operation, which at this point was running at 200,000 units a year was recognised as one of Shandong Province’s top 10 “Circular Economy Demonstration Projects” by Shandong provincial government. Triangle’ rubber products centre in Weihai, Shandong Province, is also known as production base number 3. This site has the capacity to produce 10 million rubber flaps and inner tubes, 5000 tonnes of rubber powder and 500,000 retreads a year.

Stalemate over Cooper’s Findlay plant continues

Tire Review reports that the Christmas and New Year's holidays brought no relief to the dispute between Cooper Tire & Rubber and its union-represented workers at its Findlay plant. Some 1,050 union workers remained locked out through the holidays, and Tire Review indicates the two sides will take their stalemate to a federal mediator this week.

Yokohama tweaks senior management roles

Yokohama Rubber has announced four senior management changes. The first of these to take effect is Hirohisa Hazama’s relinquishing of his position as general manager of Yokohama’s Tire R&D department. This change took effect 1 January 2012. Hazama will continue in his existing roles as corporate officer and general manager of the Tire Global Technical division. Yokohama has not named a successor for the Tire R&D role.

Cooper launches Discover S/T MAXX extreme off-road tyre

Cooper has launched its new 4×4 tyre for extreme conditions, the Discoverer S/T MAXX. The tyre’s compound and tread succeed the popular Discoverer STT. Cooper stated that the tyre will have its first serious test during the 2012 Dakar Rally, in which it will be fitted to Xavier Foj’s Toyota Land Cruiser 150; the third consecutive time the legendary Spanish driver will run on Cooper rubber. The tyre will be launched fully into Europe in February. It is M+S rated and available in sizes ranging from 16 to 18 inch.

Rzonzef new Commercial Sales VP for Goodyear Dunlop EMEA

Goodyear Dunlop has announced its appointment of Michel Rzonzef as the new vice president of its EMEA Commercial Sales and Marketing Product business unit, responsible for “driving a single aligned strategy and operating plan for commercial vehicle tyres”, according to the company’s announcement.

Yokohama releases English-language CSR report

The English language version of Yokohama Rubber’s 32-page CSR Report 2011 is now available. Two versions of the company’s corporate and social responsibility document are available – a print version, which is available to download as a pdf, and a digital version. This second option contains more detailed information than the print version, the company shares. Both versions were first published in Japanese in August 2011.

Report: Cheng Shin, Kenda earnings to grow fast in 1Q 2012

Taiwan-based tyre makers including Cheng Shin Rubber Ind. Co. and Kenda Rubber Industrial Co., are expected to see substantial growth in earnings in the first quarter of 2012 due to declines in raw material prices, particularly natural rubber. Furthermore, according to Taiwan Economic News, the European sovereign debt crisis means tyre manufacturers have slashed inventories to get rid of the risk in the prices of stocked goods.

Momentive and Sumitomo collaborate to produce AAA eco-tyre

Momentive Performance Materials Inc., has announced its collaboration with Sumitomo Rubber Industries, Ltd. on the development of Enasave Premium tyre, which earned the best rating (AAA) for rolling resistance under Japan Automobile Tyre Manufacturers Association’s (JATMA) labelling system. Launched at the Tokyo Motor Show, 2-11 December 2011, Enasave Premium is Sumitomo’s flagship tyre in its fuel-efficient tyre range.

Margins still tight in India despite lower rubber prices

The recent easing of rubber prices was understandably welcomed by tyre manufacturers, yet it represents no panacea for the industry; other costs, notably for energy, continue their upward trend. In India, these issues are accompanied by a weakening rupee. Financial daily the Business Standard reports that despite a 15 per cent fall in natural rubber prices, India’s tyre makers are facing ever tighter operating margins.
