Grouptyre’s 4×4 ‘margin and massive stock’

If you want a company that offers both margins and “massive stocks,” Grouptyre believes its Evergreen, Federal and Goodride lines are the way to. According to the company, Grouptyre offers all the premium brand 4×4 products the market knows of as well as what it calls its “margin generating exclusive brands”. The company rounds off its description of its proposition by pointing to what it calls its “unrivalled” delivery service: “You can be sure of obtaining the right 4×4 tyres, just when you need them, with all the support you need from a market leading organisation.”

Conti introduces alignment indicators to European commercial range

Excessive negative or positive camber and incorrectly set toe cause tyres to wear out prematurely, and for more than a decade Continental has included a straightforward method of detecting this on its US market commercial vehicle tyres. Truck tyres sold by Conti on the other side of the pond feature what are known as Visual Alignment Indicators, or VAI, on the shoulder ribs. The German tyre maker refers to VAI as an “extremely simple” system that enables incorrect wheel alignment on trucks and trailers to be easily recognised without the need for complex electronic measurements. Now Continental is set to introduce VAI into selected items within its European product range.

Sibur, Reliance JV to meet India’s synthetic rubber needs

The biggest petrochemical company in Russia and Eastern Europe has entered into a joint venture with India’s largest private company to produce butyl rubber. On 21 February Sibur and Reliance Industries Limited jointly announced their intention to establish a facility in Jamnagar, India capable of producing 100,000 tonnes of the substance per annum. The plant will be operated by the joint venture company Reliance Sibur Eleastomers Private Limited, which will be India’s first butyl rubber manufacturer and the world’s forth largest supplier.

Retread, recycle, repair – Kal Tire discusses the ‘three Rs’

It’s now more than two years since the Kal Tire Mining Tire Group acquired a majority shareholding in Derbyshire-based OTR Tyres, and the company says retreading at its Alfreton facility shows that despite increasing raw material costs and a major shortage of good, retreadable casings, demand for a quality product still exists. In the past 12 months Kal Tire’s UK retreading plant utilised in excess of 1.3 million pounds (590,000 kilogrammes) of rubber compound in the retreading of more than 3,000 off-road tyres.

Deals reached between Cooper, unions

No need for undue excitement. An agreement has been ratified between Cooper Tire & Rubber and workers based in Findlay, Ohio – but they aren’t the locked-out workers embroiled in the fracas oft reported by Tyrepress.com over the past couple of months. The three-year contract with the US tyre maker involves truck drivers represented by the Teamsters union. Final approval of the new contract was given on 18 February.

Work begins on new Casumina plant

Groundbreaking has taken place at the site of the future Casumina radial plant in Vietnam’s Binh Doung Province; on the morning of 16 February the company, Southern Rubber Industry Joint Stock Company chairman and CEO Nguyen Ngoc Tuan presided over a ceremony marking the start of construction work at the 12 hectare site. Stage one work is expected to be completed next year and will give the plant an initial capacity of 350,000 tyres per annum. Completion of stage two is planned for late 2015 and will increase capacity to 600,000 tyres, while stage three, scheduled for completion in 2017, will give the plant a 1,000,000 piece annual capacity. Total investment in the plant amounts to VND 3,380 billion (£101 million).

Environmental award for BluEarth-1

At this month’s Pneu Expo 2012, Yokohama’s flagship eco tyre the BluEarth-1 was awarded a Pneu Expo Innovations Trophy. Trophies were given for excellence in one of three categories: environmental actions, shop equipment innovations, and service innovations. The Japanese tyre maker was awarded the trophy for environmental actions, recognising the BluEarth-1’s contribution to bettering the environment through improved vehicle fuel economy.

European launch for Yokohama’s BluEarth AE-01

Almost a year ago Yokohama Rubber introduced the first of its BluEarth series, the BluEarth-1, into Europe. Now the European BluEarth portfolio is to be extended with the release of the BluEarth AE-01 fuel-efficient range of standard passenger car tyres. Scheduled for introduction into our region in March, the AE-01 will be available in 40 sizes from 205/55R16 91H to 155/80R13 79T. Following the tyre’s European launch it will also be introduced into other global markets.

Goodyear reacts to tyre manufacturing innovation award

The endorsement of Goodyear’s truck tyre retread cushion life extension as “Tyre Manufacturing Innovation of the Year” by Tyre Technology International has been greeted with “honour” by Jean-Claude Kihn, chief technical officer for The Goodyear Tyre & Rubber Company. The Multi-Piece Cushion technology was called “a big advantage for Goodyear Authorised Retreaders.”

Cooper workers to participate in ‘justice’ road trip

The lockout at Cooper Tire & Rubber’s Findlay plant in the US state of Ohio has been in effect for almost three months now. And while the tyre maker is keeping quiet about how or even if it plans to reach a mutually acceptable agreement with the United Steelworkers union, the situation is being kept in the public eye by the union. On 15 February the USW announced a joint project with the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers, and Grain Millers International Union (BCTGM). Called “From Fargo to Findlay: A Journey for Justice”, the project involves locked out workers from Findlay and a BCTGM represented factory embarking on a road trip from Fargo, North Dakota (where the aforementioned factory is located) to Findlay. The USW says the road trip’s aim is to “focus attention on the most recent wave of greed-motivated corporate attacks on workers and their unions.”

Work starts on Sumitomo’s South America plant

Ground breaking for Sumitomo Rubber Industries’ first tyre factory in Central and South America recently took place in Fazenda Rio Grande City, Brazil. A ceremony was held on 27 January to mark the commencement of work on the new plant, which is scheduled to start operation in October 2013. Around R$560 million (£206.8 million) is being invested in first-stage construction work at the plant. By the time this initial stage project is operating at full steam at the end of 2016 the Fazenda Rio Grande City plant will produce 15,000 passenger car radials per day (2,200 tons per month).

Goodyear increases 2011 sales, earnings despite low Q4 volumes

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company has reported increased sales and earnings for the fourth quarter of 2011 and the full year. In the Europe, Middle East and Africa region the company improved on its 2010 figures, with segment operating income up to $627 million, compared to $319 million in the previous year. The company’s fourth quarter represented a slowdown in the region, shipping fewer tyre units than in 2010 – 16.9 million vs. 17.7 million – and it predicted that 2012 would be down by up to nine per cent in European consumer business, with worse predicted for the commercial original equipment market. Chairman and chief executive officer, Richard J Kramer commented on the company’s overall sales and segment operating income records by saying the company had “successfully managed a challenging economic environment.”

Indonesia to form ‘mega’ rubber company

Indonesia's government plans to invest US$5.6 billion consolidating 15 state-owned businesses into a large single rubber and palm oil company. The Jakarta Globe reports that the 15 businesses, which last year generated combined sales of some $4.5 billion, will be consolidated under parent company PT Perkebunan Nusantara III. The planned Indonesian merger echoes the plantation merger that occurred in Malaysia in 2008, when the government there combined three state-owned planters to form Sime Darby.

Avon deploys new tyre for British GT Championship

The Avon brand, manufactured by Cooper Tire & Rubber Company Europe Ltd, has unveiled the fourth generation of its GT racing tyre since it took over as sole supplier and title sponsor of the series in 2006. Avon Tyres Motorsport technical manager, Mike Lynch, believes the new tyre will be around a second quicker than its predecessor around most circuits on the British GT calendar but, importantly, will also be durable enough for teams to use strategies demanding longer stints.

Goodyear joins automotive green group

Goodyear Tire & Rubber has become the latest company to join The Suppliers Partnership for the Environment (SP), a collaboration between automotive manufacturers and suppliers and the US Environmental Protection Agency that aims to create new business-centred approaches to environmental protection; solutions that address green issues while providing value throughout the automotive supply chain.
