Talk in pounds, not PSI appreciated – Goodyear reports positive FOS feedback

Recently Goodyear launched its FleetOnlineSolutions Mobile Technical Evaluation (FOS Mte) for OTR tyre into the Europe, Middle East and Africa region business area. The internet-based tyre management programme allows fleet inspection reports to be filed online at the time of each visit, quickly giving the customer information on the performance of each tyre in the fleet. It also provides relevant information in actual cost terms for greater transparency.

Maxxis partners to expand retreading operation

Kian Hon Tyres Sdn. Bhd., the sole Malaysian distributor of the Maxxis tyre brand, is placing a greater focus on retreading the Taiwanese tyre maker’s products with the opening of an expanded retreading facility. The company says it has received the “full support and involvement” of Maxxis to construct a tread rubber production line and expand its retreading plant in Penang. Total capacity at the plant, which first entered operation in 1980, will increase to 120,000 retreads a year and 15,000 tread liners per month. The plant will be the primary retreading and tread liner production site for the Maxxis brand within the region.

A new distribution partnership between Lehigh Technologies and specialty chemicals and logistic solutions provider Andes Chemical Corporation will expand Lehigh’s geographic reach into Latin America and give the US-based company increased opportunities to meet growing demand for its micronised rubber powder (MRP).

Conti opens Berlin public affairs office

Harry Rogasch is reporting to Berlin as head of Continental’s new Liaison Office for Public Affairs. The office opens for business in the new year and Rogasch’s responsibilities will include representing the legislative and regulatory interests of the company's Rubber and Automotive Groups and engaging in dialogue with political, administrative, and regulatory institutions in the German capital.

New additions bring RTA membership close to 300

The Retread Tire Association reports a membership list approaching the 300 mark. The US-based retreading association has announced the addition of a number of new members, including Chilean retreading association Asociación De Renovadores Y Recauchadores De Neumáticos De Chile, Malaysian companies Eversafe Rubber Works, P Tread 1 Rubber Company and Sun Rubber Industry, plus – closer to home – Illinois-based firm Salem Tire Center. According to the RTA, the association has also gained several other new members, however they have opted to remain anonymous.

Tyre makers keen to work with materials manufacturers, says Lanxess

The results of a study involving questionnaires and face-to-face interviews with more than 70 experts from 32 tyre makers, including all top 20 suppliers, show 85 per cent of the companies questioned expect the new EU tyre labelling regulation will significantly impact their daily businesses. Most of those questioned also view the regulation as an opportunity rather than a burden.

Apollo launches 57-inch OTR tyre

The 11th International Mining and Machinery Exhibition (IMME) took place in Kolkata, India between 5 and 8 December. During the show Apollo Tyres launched the largest OTR tyre produced in the country, the XTRAX 40.00‐57.

Goodyear transferring stock to NASDAQ

On 7 December Goodyear Tire & Rubber announced it will transfer its stock exchange listing to the NASDAQ Global Select Market from the New York Stock Exchange. Goodyear’s common stock shares will begin trading on the NASDAQ Global Select Market on or about 18 December 2012 under the current Goodyear ticker symbol “GT.” Additionally, Goodyear’s 5.875 per cent mandatory convertible preferred stock will trade on the NASDAQ Global Select Market under the ticker symbol “GTPPP.”

Metzeler announces spring 2013 debut for Karoo 3

The successor to Metzeler’s Karoo and Karoo T will be available in spring 2013, the tyre maker reports. The motorcycling world gained a sneak preview of the new Karoo 3 at November’s EICMA motorcycle show in Italy, and when it hits the road next year the tyre will be available in three front wheel and six rear sizes. Metzeler describes the new knobbly tyre as a product “designed for bikers who love adventure and off-road travel.”

Toyo to open Toyo Tyre Malaysia in spring 2013

Toyo Tire & Rubber Co., Ltd. president and CEO Kenji Nakakura has announced a change in name for its forthcoming consolidated tyre manufacturing subsidiary in Malaysia. Formerly Toyo Tyre Manufacturing (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, the passenger and light truck tyre manufacturing facility will now be known as Toyo Tyre Malaysia Sdn Bhd. The factory will begin operation next spring.

Lower rubber prices push up Indian tyre shares

The Hindu Business Line reports that faling rubber prices in India led to shares in India’s major tyre makers rising up to five per cent earlier this week. The newspaper stated on 5 December that Apollo Tyres, MRF, JK Tyre and Ceat were amongst those to gain, and MRF stock hit an all-time high of Rs 11,892 (£135.32) on the Bombay Stock Exchange.

John McGlade elected to Goodyear Board

The Board of Directors at the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company now has 12 members following the election of John E. McGlade. When not sitting on Goodyear’s board, McGlade is chairman, president and chief executive officer of Air Products & Chemicals Inc.

Goodyear a Thomson Reuters “Top 100 Global Innovator”

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company has been named a Thomson Reuters 2012 Top 100 Global Innovator for the second consecutive year. “This recognition is further evidence that Goodyear is continuing its drive as the tyre industry’s innovation leader,” stated chief technology officer, Joseph Zekoski.

Goodyear declares dividend on 5.875% preferred stock

Directors of The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company have declared a quarterly dividend of 73.44 cents per share of mandatory convertible preferred stock. The dividend is payable 1 January 2013 to shareholders of record on 14 December 2012. The payout represents an annual rate of US$2.9375 per share.
