Giti Tire Group turnover slightly up, income stable in 2012

Last year the Giti Tire Group increased its revenue by 2.1 per cent while its net income remained virtually at 2011 levels. The company told our sister publication Neue Reifenzeitung that revenue increased year-on-year to 3.02 billion euros; in 2011 the total revenue for Giti Tire and PT Gajah Tunggal, with their factories in China and Indonesia, was 2.96 billion euros. Operating profit jumped 42.9 per cent to 258.53 million euros, a figure that represents an 8.6 per cent yield on turnover. Net income decreased 0.3 per cent year-year to 113.17 million euros.

Signing ceremony held for Yokohama’s US plant

On 29 April 2013, Yokohama Rubber signed an agreement with the US State of Mississippi, making plans to build a truck and bus tyre plant in West Point official. Hikomitsu Noji, president and representative director of Yokohama Rubber and Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant represented the tyre maker and State at a signing ceremony held at the West Point Ritz, near the site of the future company plant. The facility will be located approximately 149 miles (240 kilometres) from state capital Jackson.

North West Logistics signs ATS-E, Michelin tyre deal

UK and European transport specialist North West Logistics has signed an agreement with ATS Euromaster to implement and manage a 100 per cent Michelin policy across its fleet of 60 trucks and 50 trailers. Ainsworth & Martin acquired the company in 2010 and has recently merged to form a single operation based in Accrington, Lancashire. Neither company had a formal tyre policy in place before the merger, utilising local dealers to fit many different brands to their vehicles. Now mobile technicians from ATS-E’s Blackburn site seven miles away will carry out routine fleet inspections, as well as regrooving, twinning and turning tyres on the rim to increase their longevity.

Avon becomes Time Attack series tyre partner

Avon Motorsport has taken its place alongside Pirelli as one of two tyre companies sponsoring the Time Attack series in 2013. At the first event of the year at Cadwell Park Avon tyres were used to claim the overall fastest lap, a new Time Attack lap record in qualifying, and second place overall in the intensely close Pro Class final, thanks to the Mitsubishi Evo of Gareth Lloyd. Time Attack organiser, Andy Barnes praised Avon for recognising the potential of the championship, and the good fit with the brand’s products provided by the series.

Goodyear reports higher Q1 earnings, outlines 3-point Europe plan

Although Goodyear Tire & Rubber shipped fewer tyres and generated lower sales in the first three months of 2013 than a year earlier, the bottom line for the quarter was much healthier. The only regional disappointment was, predictably, Europe – and Goodyear says it will address weakness in the European markets by implementing “additional productivity improvements”. Specific details regarding these measures have yet to be announced.

Yokohama to Build TBR plant in the US

On 26 April, Yokohama Rubber announced plans to set up a new plant to manufacture truck and bus tyres in the United States. The plant will be established with a capital investment of US$300 million and construction work will begin at the site in West Point, Mississippi by September 2013. The Japanese tyre maker intends for production to start in October 2015 and says the factory will have an annual production capacity of one million tyres.

Française de roues focusing on original equipment

When listing off the major European alloy manufacturers, it isn’t hard to forget the “Française de roues” plant in Diors, smack in the middle of France. The company, along with Dial, is the only cast alloy wheel manufacturer remaining in France. The wheel maker has been established for a number of years and was known as Montupet before its parent company announced plans at the start of to divest its wheel business to Indian company Deltronix.

ATS Euromaster names new group MD

Ian Stuart is to retire at the end of May 2013 after seven years as group managing director of ATS Euromaster, the UK’s largest comprehensive tyre specialist. He will be replaced by Peter Allen, who is currently commercial director of Michelin Canada.

‘Don’t change anything’, F1 teams tell Pirelli

The first four races of this year’s Formula One season have been invariably followed by murmuring about the tyres used, most recently from Red Bull Racing, who despite a Vettel victory in Bahrain called for Pirelli to change its tyres for the remainder of the season. But in an interview with Reuters, Pirelli motorsport director Paul Hembery claimed that the “vast majority” of teams implore the tyre maker not to change anything.

Toyo to relocate head office in 70th year

Toyo Tire & Rubber Co., Ltd. has announced its plans to build a new head office in Itami, Hyogo Prefecture next to the site of its Tire Technical Center. The Japanese manufacturer, whose current head office is in Osaka said that the company plans to relocate in August 2015, the month in which Toyo will celebrate its 70th anniversary.

Rubber prices reach new low

Back in October 2011, analysts at Deutsche Bank predicted that natural rubber prices would average US$4.50 a kilogramme in 2013. At the moment it looks as if that projection way off – last week, natural rubber prices reached a new low, sinking in excess of eight per cent to $2.50 a kilogramme.

Goodyear a Boeing Supplier of the Year

On 18 April, the Boeing Company honoured Goodyear Tire & Rubber as one of its 17 most exceptional suppliers. Goodyear was selected from a pool of more than 23,000 Boeing suppliers from around the world and received a Boeing Supplier of the Year award at a ceremony held in San Diego, US. The tyre maker was awarded in the Electronics/Hydraulics/Mechanical category.

Rimstock winter wheels initiative “a success”

Rimstock introduced a range of Team Dynamics winter alloy wheels for the first time this season. The company has been impressed with the results, labelling the new initiative “a success” despite a mostly quite mild 2012-13 winter season. The company said it is “looking to expand the programme further for 2013”, with “two large OE marques” interested in adopting a winter programme. The programme works similarly to the trend of storing summer tyres in “tyre hotels” over winter widely used in Europe, but with take-up in the UK only occurring over the last few winters. Rimstock believes it is becoming attractive with the trying grip conditions and poor road maintenance of Britain’s winter roads, to protect original equipment wheels when temperatures drop.

Pearl River diversifying into non-tyre businesses

Pearl River Tyre (Holdings) Limited reports that the disposal PRT Capital Pte Ltd took place on 16 April 2013. Upon completion of the HK$85 million (£7.2 million) deal, PRT Capital will cease to be a subsidiary of Pearl River Tyre and the financial results will no longer be consolidated with that of the group.

Commander to retire as head of Lanxess’ Butyl Rubber business

Dr. Ron Commander, head of Lanxess’ Butyl Rubber business unit, will retire at the end of this year. Before this takes effect, the 62-year old will spend his final six months or so with the specialty chemicals company in a new, Canada-based role. Commander’s new position will take effect on 1 July, and on that date he will be succeeded as head of the Butyl Rubber business unit by Dr. Guenther Weymans, who is currently head of Lanxess’ Keltan Elastomers business unit.
