Get it Right With Goodyear

It is received wisdom that the vast majority of 4×4 vehicles never leave the tarmac, let alone spend weekends up to their axles in mud, yet image is still very important. Drivers like their vehicles to look as though they could tackle Mt. Everest on a winter’s day, even if their most taxing journey is the school run.

Tyres play an important part in this image creation – aggressive, knobbly tyres certainly look the part but, says Goodyear, fitting these tyres just for their looks can be counter-productive. While many 4×4 drivers want their vehicles to look tough and rugged, they actually want on-road performance similar to that of an ordinary saloon car.

RMA Honours Plants for Safety Improvements

(Akron/Tire Review) Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA) honored 63 tyre and rubber manufacturing facilities improving their worker health and safety. RMA’s Safety and Health Improvement Program (SHIP) Awards were given at RMA’s annual meeting, held 25-27 February.

Goodyear Named Penske ‘Supplier of the Year’

(Akron/Tire Review) Penske Truck Leasing Co. tapped Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company as its top supplier for 2005, the seventh straight time it has claimed the honour. Goodyear was rated first among all suppliers according to Penske’s quality rating system. Goodyear provides Penske with replacement and retread medium truck tyres in North America, as well as fleet management services.

Maxxis Trepador 4×4 Has Competition Pedigree

The Maxxis bias ply M-8060 Trepador competition tyre has enjoyed considerable off-road success – so much so that Maxxis has developed a radial version for day-to-day use. The M-8060 Trepador radial is designed to combine excellent traction with smooth handling and is available in 37×12.5 17, 37×12.5-16 and 40×13.5-17 sizes.

An aggressive directional tread element arrangement ensures a uniform tread contact area for sure-footed handling on all wet and dry surfaces, while the multi-stage staggered shoulder lugs give added control on uneven terrain, especially boggy ground and snow.

Watts Industrial Tyres Expands Brazilian Output

Gloucestershire, UK-based, Watts Industrial Tyres has expanded its production facility in Brazil, together with its joint venture partner, Souza Pinto Ind.& Com. De Artefatos De Borrahca Ltda.

Watts and Souza Pinto commenced manufacturing of a limited range of resilient solid tyres in late 2001, and have expanded the facilities product range over the last four years. The initial strategy in setting up the facility was to service the rapidly growing Brazilian market, as well as taking advantage of the opportunities presented by the Mercosur markets. The Brazilian Watts factory and central warehouse is based in Lorena, on the main Rodovia Presidente Dutra highway between Sao Paolo and Rio de Janeiro, and has grown from a 1,300 square metre facility to its new current size of 4,400 square metres.

Indian Government Joins the IRSG

The International Rubber Study Group has announced that the Government of India will join the Group on 1 April 2006. India’s total rubber consumption has been increasing steadily since 1960 at a rate of 6.8 per cent/year to reach 968,000 tonnes in 2004. This makes India the fourth largest rubber consuming country, behind China, the USA and Japan.

Cooper Appoints New Mickey Thompson Wheel Product Manager

(Akron/Tire Review) Cooper Tire & Rubber Co.’s Mickey Thompson brand division has hired Carl Robinson to the new position of wheel product manager. Robinson had been Weld Wheel Industries Inc.’s director of motorsports and president of Race Wheel Enterprises Inc. in Dania, Fla. Robinson has also helped develop various testing devices for wheel and tire assemblies and is a past member of the S.F.I. Wheel Certification Committee, Cooper said.

Firestone Staff Stopped From Collecting for Liberian Workers

The United Steel Workers (USW) has angrily denounced the management of Bridgestone Firestone’s LaVergne, Tennessee plant for preventing members from collecting cash to help workers in Liberia. The USW said Liberian workers were struggling to provide for their families and accused the manufacturer of “human rights violations.”

Strong Sales Increase Toyo’s Income in 2005

(Akron/Tire Review) Toyo Tire & Rubber Co. reported that operating and net income increased 26.4 per cent and 12.9 per cent, respectively, for the first three quarters of its 2005 fiscal year. Sales in North America rose compared to previous years, according to Toyo, and OE and replacement sales in Japan also increased due to rising vehicle production and higher demand for winter tyres in the country.

Cooper Recall Details

(Akron/Tire Review) The voluntary tyre recall launched by Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. on 13 February includes Cooper, associate and private brand tyres it produced as far back as February 2004, according to documents found on NHTSA’s web site. Cooper itself has issued no public information about the recall.

Of the approximately 288,000 tyres Cooper is recalling, some 183,000 were produced between February 2004 and 21 January 2005. These tyres – predominately designed for light truck/SUV applications – were being recalled due a slow leak that may be caused by a “contaminant in the upper sidewall,” according to an Associated Press report.

Advanced Compound Fillers Increase Fuel Economy

Fuel prices have been increasing across the board since 1988. Drivers today have to spend more than twice as much per litre of petrol used than at that time. And the trend is set to continue. In fact, the International Energy Agency (IEA, Paris) expects demand for all types of fuel to significantly increase – by as much as 50 per cent over the next 25 years.

So much for the bad news. But there is also good news –chemicals company Degussa AG (Dusseldorf), intensified the work in its Advanced Fillers & Pigments Business Unit aimed at improving the properties of truck and car tyres alike. This work has led to fuel consumption reductions of up to eight per cent – depending on how figures are compared. Based on an average of 150,000 kilometres per truck, this could result in annual fuel savings of approximately 2,500 litres – a substantial amount.

Cooper Declares 136th Straight Dividend

(Akron/Tire Review) Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. announced a quarterly dividend of 10.5 cents per share on common stock. It is the company’s 136th consecutive quarterly dividend.
