Cooper’s North American Head to Retire

Cooper Tire & Rubber Company has announced that Dick Stephens, president, North American Tire Division, will retire from the Company. Stephens’ impressive career at Cooper spans 28 years.

“Dick has made a great and significant contribution to the growth and success of the company as well as advancement of our technology around the world. His guidance, expertise and determination will be missed and we wish him well,” said Tom Dattilo, Cooper’s chairman, president and CEO.

Michelin Announces North American Price Hikes

(Akron/Tire Review) Michelin North America (MNA) plans to implement price increases on all of its brands and lines in the coming months. The increases, ranging from 2.5 per cent to 5 per cent, cover replacement tyres sold in Canada and the US. MNA will boost prices on its Michelin, BFGoodrich, Uniroyal, associate and private brand replacement passenger and light truck/SUV tyres in the US by up to 5 per cent as of 1 August.

Tanzanian Plantation Politics

Members of the Tanzanian Parliamentary Committee for Investment have called on the government to transfer ownership of the Muheza Rubber Plantation in Tanga Region to General Tyre factory in Arusha to raise rubber production and create more job opportunities.

The MPs made the recommendation after visiting the factory and discussing how best to increase the supply of raw materials from within the country (as opposed to Malaysian sources), particularly from the rubber plantation in Muheza, the local Sunday Observer reported.

Falcon Tyres posts 300 per cent growth in net profit

Falcon Tyres Ltd has recorded a 300 per cent increase in net profit since it was bought by the Indian Ruia group. Falcon Tyres registered a net profit of 36.3 million rupees compared with 9.2 million in 2004 – 2005. Total company turnover stood at 2.55 billion rupees against 2.19 billion the same time last year. The company announced 25 per cent dividend for its shareholders, which was 2.50 rupees per share, the highest in its history.

JK Tyre to Up Prices

According to JK Tyres’ CFO, A K Kinra, a 7 – 8 per cent price increase should offset increased rubber costs. “The increase in the cost is very high. There is no way the tyre industry can sustain on its own, so to take care of that cost increase, it has to go for a price increase. That has compelled us to increase tyre prices also,” Mr Kinra told India television news sources.

JK Tyre to Raise Prices

In India, Mr. A K Kinra, Chief Financial Officer of JK Tyre, has said that the company will increase tyre prices by up to eight per cent from 1st June, explaining that the step was necessary to offset growing raw material costs, notably the rising price of rubber. He said that, in Malaysia, the price of rubber has risen by 85 per cent in a year and, as rubber constitutes up to one third of the cost of raw materials, the price increase was inevitable.

New Footpaths from Old Tyres

Research in the USA has led to the development of a footpath surfacing material, made from scrap tyres. The new surface is said to be both cheap to produce and provides a “joint-friendly surface” for pedestrians and joggers.

Consultant Fired Over a Year Ago, Cooper Says

(Akron/Tire Review) Recent television news reports concerning Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. using an ex-con to conduct accident site investigations were more than they appeared to be, according to Cooper. According to a Cooper spokesman, the tyre maker did employ Frank Ruggier to investigate vehicle accidents on its behalf, but fired him “over a year ago” when the company discovered Ruggier had previously been convicted of insurance fraud and grand theft.

RMA Says Scrap Study Shows Tyre Age Not a Performance Issue

(Akron/Tire Review) A study undertaken in the USA by the Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA) claims there is no correlation between the end of a tyre’s “safety performance” and its chronological age. RMA released its study data earlier this week after examining some 14,000 scrapped P-metric and LT-metric tyres late last year, comparing each tyre’s date of manufacture to the date it was examined.

TV Reports Allege Cooper Tire Suit Evidence Issues

(Akron/Tire Review) Television news reports in Cincinnati, Cleveland and Detroit over the last week allege that Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. hired an ex-convict to investigate some allegedly tyre-related accidents on its behalf, collect evidence and deliver the accident site evidence to Cooper headquarters in Findlay, Ohio. In the televised reports, Cooper denied that its tyres are faulty or are to blame in tread separation accidents.

Ludwig Downgrade Drops Goodyear Shares

(Akron/Tire Review) Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. share prices dropped to a new 52-week low May 22 after an industry analyst downgraded the company’s stock. Goodyear’s stock fell as low as $12.22 per share in trading Monday before finishing the day at $12.71, down from the previous low of $12.78 per share, according to exchange reports.

World First as New Rubber Road and Rail Highway Trial is Announced

Trials of the world’s first all rubber road and rail highway, funded by WRAP (the Waste & Resources Action Programme), are now underway in association with Holdfast Level Crossings Ltd. The HoldFast Rubber Highway (HRH) has the potential to recycle an average of 354,000 tyres in every one mile stretch of rubber highway. WRAP is funding the trial following an open call for demonstration trials using UK post consumer tyres in a range of new applications. The trial will incorporate 8,000 vehicle movements over an eight week period to assess early life performance of the HRH.

WRAP Launches Competition to Boost Used Tyres Reprocessing

A new capital support programme has been launched by WRAP (the Waste & Resources Action Programme) aimed at creating new reprocessing infrastructure for used tyres. The capital programme will provide financial support towards the costs of plant, equipment and infrastructure for projects in the UK in order to increase recycling of used tyres into value added markets, including re-treading facilities.
