Rubber Recycling Companies Call for More Recognition

The head of one of the UK’s leading specialist rubber recycling companies says there should be more recognition for the contribution such firms make to protecting the environment, conserving natural resources, creating jobs and boosting exports. Michael Hopkinson, chairman of Rosehill Polymers of Sowerby Bridge, West Yorkshire, says that dealing with the UK’s huge amount of waste rubber is a growing problem which needs to be addressed urgently at government level. Rosehill Polymers, established nearly 30 years ago, utilises around 3,600 tonnes of recycled tyre rubber annually most of which is converted into products for the rail industry by a system which incorporates Rosehill’s own Flexilon polyurethane binder formulation.

Cooper Outlines Efficiency Improvement Plans

Cooper Tire & Rubber Co’s has announced plans to gain $170 million by the end of 2008 through cost cuts and profit improvements, according to an official filing. Cooper said it will reduce annual spending by $70 million and boost profit by $100 million with “better pricing and a change in our manufacturing strategy.” The plans also include operating three of the company’s US tyre plants around the clock while staffing a fourth with temporary workers during peak periods to help return the biggest share of its business to profitability.

Tyre Specialist Rolls Out New Sprinter

A North Lincolnshire tyre specialist has become one of the first companies in Britain to rubber stamp the new-generation Mercedes Sprinter van. Grimsby-based North Lincs Tyres has just taken delivery of a high-roofed Mercedes Sprinter 311CDI Long from Immingham dealer H and L Garages. Proprietor Tony Woods bought his first Mercedes van when starting the business in 1994, and has remained loyal to the famous three-pointed star ever since. The latest arrival is the sixth Sprinter on his growing fleet.

Kplus 30 Boosts Kraiburg’s Sales

One year after being launched, the high-performance Kplus 30 special compound tyres from Kraiburg Austria are successfully established on the market. Of the 11,000 tonnes of precured treads, that the company sold in Europe, 1,500 tonnes were notched up by the premium range Kraiburg plus, representing a remarkable 13 per cent of total sales.

In Germany, the pre-cured Kplus 30 currently generates eight per cent of sales. That brings the current overall market share of Kraiburg plus to two per cent in the core market of precured tyres. In conjunction with its twelve authorised retreading partners, who together cover more than 50 per cent of the Kraiburg precured retreading market, Kraiburg is planning to gradually further exploit the existing market potential in Germany. Three months ago Kraiburg welcomed a new, strong partner: Feneberg, a company based in Kempten, Germany. With 16 locations, the plant in the Alpine region of Allgäu now covers the entire southwest.

Goodyear Sells Cord Operations to Hyosung: Update

Following earlier reports of Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company agreeing to sell its global tyre fabric operations to Hyosung Corporation, the company has released an official statement giving details of the transaction. Goodyear and its affiliates will receive $80 million for their tyre fabric manufacturing plants and assets, which include operations in Decatur, Alabama; Utica, New York; Americana, Brazil; and Colmar-Berg, Luxembourg, subject to post-closing adjustments. The facilities, which employ about 1,000 people, produce and treat fabric that is used in Goodyear’s tyres.

Pneuman Heads Cooper Sourcing Group

(Akron/Tire Review) Wayne Pneuman has been named manager of curing, bladders and the global materials sourcing group for Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. In his new role, the 27-year Cooper veteran will be responsible for the technical aspects of the tyre curing process both domestically and internationally as well as the technical approval and control of raw materials on a global basis.

Pirelli Cuts the Mustard With Double Win at Dijon

The sixth round of the International FIA-GT Championship saw double success for Pirelli, with the Maserati MC12, driven by Davies-Biagi, dominating the race. In second and third places came two Aston Martin DBR9s, which were running on Pirelli rubber. In the intensely competitive GT2 category, the Ferrari 430 GTC – also shod with P Zero Racing tyres – led its class from start to finish.

Amtel Tyre Production Begins at Moscow Plant

Amtel-Vredestein N.V. has announced that it has begun production of its Amtel brand of tyres at the Moscow Tyre Plant-M; only weeks after the company announced its intention to acquire the factory. The company has also met its promise to make the plant more environmentally friendly by shutting down rubber mixing at the facility.

Hyosung to Buy Goodyear Tyre Cord Plants

Korean company Hyosung Corp. is to take over four tyre cord plants from Goodyear Tire & Rubber for an undisclosed price, although various sources are quoting a figure of $80 million. Hyosung will acquire 100 per cent of Goodyear subsidiary Utica, plus it will assume control of the tyre manufacturer’s cord factory at Decatur. The other two factories are sited in Luxembourg and Brazil. In addition to the acquisitions, Hyosung has struck a deal – reportedly worth $3.2 billion – to supply Goodyear with tyre cord.

Natural Rubber Prices Continue to Fall

The price of natural rubber fell by five per cent earlier this week, to $1.80/kg. Analysts at the Deutsche Bank say that this brings the price close to the level in January this year ($1.75/kg) and is a 35 per cent drop from the peak price last June of $2.80/kg.

Driving in the north calls for tyres designed for Nordic conditions. To meet these demands Nokian Tyres has developed brand-new summer tyres especially suitable for the rough, wet and grooved roads, and for the challenging and changeable conditions in Russia and the Nordic countries. RMA Sees Tread Stock Shipments Up

(Akron/Tire Review) RMA says that continued economic growth will lead to a 1.7 per cent boost in tread rubber shipments for truck tyre retreads through the end of this year. That forecast falls below 2005’s 1.9 per cent shipment growth rate, RMA said. If the prediction holds, it will mark the fourth consecutive year that shipments increased.

Cooper and Avon Winter Tyres Join the Market

Cooper Tire & Rubber Europe launched its Weathermaster Snow winter tyre in May 2006 ready for the winter selling season. This T-speed rated tyre is available in 21 sizes, covering 13 – 160-inhc rim diameters. The broad range of sizes fit many small and medium cars from the new Peugeot 107 to Ford Focus and VW Golf.

Marangoni Pneumatici has been active in the industrial tyres sector for 20 years with percentage growth figures around the double-digit mark for each of those years. Now in order to fulfil growing demand for its products, Marangoni is evaluating the possible expansion of its total production capacity through a project in “a competitive labour cost country.” Marangoni’s existing industrial tyre capacity offers a range of products including resilient solid tyres, press on bands tyres and pneumatic tyres. The current manufacturing site is ISO 9001 certified.
