Goodway and Indag Consider Partnership Options

Goodway Rubber and Indag Rubber Ltd are considering their partnership options after signing a memorandum of understanding on 23 August. According to the document the companies are now considering “joint opportunities to…strengthen both parties’ market position in the rubber compounding and retreading industry.” The firms are expected to announce whether it is feasible for them to enter into a “strategic partnership” within six weeks of signing the memorandum.

Goodway to Boost OTR Tyre Exports

Goodway Integrated Industries Bhd is aimining to increase exports of its off-the-road (OTR) tyres, following an agreement to enter into a joint business venture with World Rubber Trading, a Greece-based tyre distributor.

According reports in Malaysia’ Business Times, Goodway's 75 per cent owned subsidiary Bigwheel OTR Sdn Bhd and World Rubber Trading signed an agreement on 13 September, which will see the Greek company supply OTR tyre casings to Bigwheel for the production of retreaded tyres at its manufacturing plant in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan.

US Tariffs – Are They Paying Off?

The Alliance for American Manufacturing (AAM) represents a number of manufacturers and the United Steelworks union and holds the aim of strengthening manufacturing in the US, so it is no surprise the organisation views the Obama administration’s tariffs on consumer tyres from China as nothing less than a glowing success. On September 1 the AAM released a document, titled “Obama’s Bold Economic Move on Chinese Tire Imports is Paying Off”, in which it outlines the market’s reactions to the tariffs. The organisation puts forward a strong argument for their continuation – but are the tariffs really achieving their desired effect, or are they taking credit for other factors influencing the market?

Apollo Reports African Operations Halted by Strike

Apollo Tyres has notified the Bombay Stock Exchange that employees at its factories in Africa have joined a nationwide industry strike organised by National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA). Apollo states that “consequent upon declaration of a general strike in tyre industry in South Africa, the workers of both the plants at Durban and Ladysmith of ATSA (Apollo Tyres South Africa) have also gone on strike.”

Toyo Breaks Ground on China Plant

Toyo has held a groundbreaking ceremony for its new Chinese passenger car tyre manufacturing facility in Zhangjiagang City, Jiangsu Province. The subsidiary – Toyo Tires Zhangjiagang Co, Ltd will be chaired by Toyo senior corporate officer Mitsuru Hitotsuyanagi. Production is scheduled to begin in December 2011 with an annual capacity of 2 million units and a workforce approximately 500 in number.

Softer Option Tyre Consistency Key to Pedrosa Fastest Lap at Misano

Dani Pedrosa continued to chip away at the lead built earlier in the season by Jorge Lorenzo with his second win in two weeks at the Misano Circuit in Japan, though the Grand Prix was overshadowed by the tragic death of Moto2 rider Shoya Tomizawa following an accident. Pedrosa dominated proceedings all weekend and led from the green light, setting a new lap record. Valentino Rossi kept Andrea Dovizioso at bay to finish third. Whilst rain was forecast for Sunday’s race, it failed to materialise and conditions were dry and warm all weekend, allowing all riders to used the softer compound rear tyre and the harder compound front, apart from Alvaro Bautista who used the softer front to good effect, finishing eighth with the sixth fastest lap time.

JK Tyre to Bump Prices by 4%

India’s JK Tyre has told the country’s Economic Times that it will likely increase the price of its product range by a figure of up to 4 per cent. The rise would be put down to higher costs, especially natural rubber. The online report also said that JK Tyres’s prices have risen by more than 10 per cent since May.

Pirelli ‘Slightly Ahead’ With F1 Tyre Testing

Testing of Pirelli’s Formula One tyres continues, and the Italian tyre maker says test driver Nick Heidfeld was busy at the Le Castellet circuit in the south of France during the first week of September. The Toyota TF109 test car fitted with F1 PZero tyres was on the track for two days in order to further evaluate tyre construction and compounds.

Goodyear Calls for Redemption of $973 Million in Senior Notes

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company has called all of its outstanding senior notes due in 2011 and 2015 for redemption on 29 September, 2010. Goodyear intends to use net proceeds from its recent $1 billion issuance of 8.25 per cent senior notes due 2020 to fund these redemptions. The notes called for redemption are $388 million in principal amount of 7.857 per cent senior notes due on 15 August, 2011, $325 million in principal amount of 8.625 per cent senior notes due on 1 December, 2011, and $260 million in principal amount of 9 per cent senior notes due on 1 July, 2015.

Maxxis To Build Further Tyre Plant in Xiamen, China

Maxxis International, which is owned by Cheng Shin Rubber has announced that it is to build a new production facility in Xiamen on China’s south east coast, where it already operates two successful factories. The announcement follows the news that the company will build a new plant in Chong Qing, south west China within a similar timeframe.

Michelin X One MaxiTrailer Tyres Trialled by Frank Roberts & Sons

Cheshire-based bakery Frank Roberts & Sons has added two new Cartwright Multi-deck trailers fitted with Michelin X One MaxiTrailer tyres to its 70-strong fleet. Having gone to bespoke manufacturer Cartwright looking specifically for a high trailer with extra load capacity, the baker took the decision to trial the X One MaxiTrailer tyres for the improved stability they would provide the 4.5-metre-high trailers.

Hercules Aims to Gain Traction With WebFOCUS

Hercules Tire & Rubber Company has reportedly installed Information Builders WebFOCUS business intelligence (BI) platform to develop web-based dashboards and self-service reporting applications for managers throughout the organization. Hercules will use WebFOCUS to analyze sales data, manage inventory levels, synchronize warehouse operations and improve fill rates.
