Toyo Introduces Versado CUV for Crossovers

Toyo Tires has launched its latest addition to the Versado range in the US. The Versado CUV, designed for crossover vehicles, is promoted as being Toyo Tires’ “most efficient tyre yet” thanks to the low rolling resistance compound utilised. The tyre features an asymmetrical, non-directional tread, and Toyo reports the Versado’s four circumferential tread grooves contain the company’s trademarked ‘Silent Wall’ technology, which it explains as thousands of vertical serrations along the grooves’ walls that help to significantly reduce “pipe resonance”, a whistling noise audible to the human ear.

Michelin Reported to be in F1 Talks

Michelin is said to be engaged in talks that may pave the way for its return to Formula One. According to Bloomberg, Michelin managing partner Jean-Dominique Senard said the French manufacturer is holding “formal discussions” with the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile, or FIA.

Huws Gray a Michelin Convert Following Forklift Trial

Following a year-long trial using Michelin’s XZM tyres, Huws Gray Building Supplies has taken the decision to switch to Michelin product on its 60-vehicle forklift fleet. Michelin states that the 12-month trial with XZM tyres fitted to a Daewoo 30S forklift showed the Michelin tyre to offer reduced downtime and maintenance costs. The forklift was in operation for an average of six hours per day during the evaluation period, on a variety of surfaces ranging from concrete to asphalt and grit, and tyre inspections for wear and damage were conducted every six weeks.

Vredestein’s states that its recently introduced Flotation Trac implement radial is well suited to work on arable land, grassland and for transportation. This all-round range has now expanded through the addition of a fifth size.

Sumitomo Opens Tyre Technical Centre

Kobe, Japan based Sumitomo Rubber Industries celebrates its 100th anniversary during 2009, and this red-letter year for the company has seen the inauguration of its new Tyre Technical Centre. A ceremony to celebrate the opening of the new centre – which Sumitomo says will “play a major role in heritage and creation of technologies to enable the company to continue to grow in the next hundred years – was held on September 17.

New GTRadial and Primewell Tyres

As part of GITI Tire’s ongoing programme of product developments (see June Tyres & Accessories for further details), the company has added four patterns to its Primewell and GTRadial branded truck ranges. Three of the four new patterns (PTL711, PDM331 and PAM532) are being added to the Primewell range.

Cellulose a Potential Silica Replacement – Study

Researchers at Oregon State University (OSU) in the US have come across a potential replacement for silica as a reinforcing filler in tyres. Microcrystalline cellulose, which can be produced from almost any type of plant fibre, is a micrometer-sized type of crystalline cellulose that can be produced through the low-cost process of acid hydrolysis using cellulose, the component that comprises about 40 to 50 per cent of wood.

Continental Tire North America has the US market release of its Continental HTR2, an all-position wide base radial for construction vehicle applications. Toyo’s Proxes Chosen for 3rd Gen Prius

Toyota’s Prius, seen by some as the de rigueur environmental motoring statement, was released onto the Japanese market in its third generation incarnation on May 18. According to Toyo, its eco-friendly Proxes R30A tyre has been selected as an original equipment fitment for the new hybrid.

“Proxes　R30A is a tyre with improved lower rolling resistance and super silence,” a Toyo press statement comments. “This tyre was developed for the new Prius, which aims for both overwhelming performance in eco-friendliness and fun for driving.”

The new summer tyre is supplied to the Japanese market Prius in size 215/45R17 87W.

Pirelli Introduces Snowcontrol Series II

Pirelli has launched the Winter Snowcontrol Series II, which the tyre manufacturer describes as an “environmentally-friendly high performance winter tyre developed for small to mid-sized vehicles.” According to the company the new Snowcontrol Series II, like Pirelli’s UHP-orientated Sottozero Series II, aims to broaden the company’s winter tyre range in order to meet every market’s requirements.

Pirelli P Zero Tyre of the Year 2009

Auto Express has named the Pirelli P Zero ‘Tyre of the Year, ahead of three other competing brands. According to the magazine, Pirelli won the award for design a tyre with the best balance of braking and handling in the wet and dry, aquaplaning, rolling resistance and price.

Auto Express commented: “Designing tyres is all about trading off performance in one area for a gain in another However, Pirelli has certainly hit on a winning compromise here, as the P ZeroTM starred not only in the wet, but also in the dry. It topped the times on both handling tracks, plus got the honours in curved aquaplaning. No wonder it inspires confidence when the heavens open. A great all-rounder that thoroughly deserves a place on your car.”

Pirelli Researching the Use of Rice Husk Ash in Tyre Compounds

From an ecological point of view, the new Pirelli Cinturato P7 offers three headline benefits – a CO2 emission reduction of up to 4 grams per kilometre driven, 30 per cent lower noise emissions and a 4 per cent fuel saving. Pirelli’s clincher (particularly aimed at current and potential OE customers) is that it is already in position to meet the targets set by the new EU regulations that are due to take effect from 2011 and that it does this without compromising on wet or dry performance. However, none of this explains how the company is able to achieve these goals.

In mid-February, Pirelli gave details of how its 2009 – 2011 industrial plan means the company will have an increasingly “green” focus. In particular Pirelli committed to developing a series of new materials that for use in tyre compounds. One particular silica rich material is rice husk ash (RHA). Pirelli is already (as far as the technological requirements are concerned) in a position to use this material in tyre production this year. However, the material is currently the subject of a large scale viability study focusing on the availability of the kind of tonnages needed for tyre industral scale tyre manufacturing. Tyres & Accessories understands that Pirelli already has research and development teams in place in Brazil and the areas surround Milan, which just happen to be some of the best rice production areas in the world.

Lanxess to Continue “Green Tyre” Development

Plastics & Rubber Weekly has reported that Lanxess is to press on with its development of reduced rolling resistance tyres including the rubber additive nanoprene, which is said to reduce wear without a similar reduction in grip. The plastics news source reports from Dusseldorf that Lanxess chairman Axel Heitmann told journalists at the company’s annual press conference on Tuesday 18 March that the company was well placed to deal with financial problems such as the 32 per cent decline in volume experienced by Lanxess’ performance polymers business.

New Touring Tyre from Giti

Giti Tire USA has introduced the Champiro 228, a “performance touring” line of 15 H- and V-rated sizes. The new tyre features Giti’s “Nanotek” silica tread compound for wet/dry grip and lower rolling resistance, four circumferential grooves for water dispersion, shoulder grooves to resist hydroplaning, and a low noise tread design. The Champiro 228 is now available to dealers in 16- and 17-inch wheel diameters. (Tire Review/Akron)

Dunlop Launches New Tyre Testing Web Site

Dunlop have been testing tyres at the Fort Dunlop testing facility in Birmingham since 1923, but this department recently joined the information superhighway with a web site of its own – dunloptyretesting.co.uk. Tyre testing in Birmingham has come a long way since the first tyres were observed on simulator roads at 10 miles per hour. Today the company boasts speed tests of up to 400 km/h. “At Dunlop, we test not only for durability but also for performance. We have recently acquired ISOIE/17025:05 accreditation meaning we are classified as a laboratory standard facility,” web site literature explained.

Currently the facility is equipped to carry out the following tests: ECE 30, ECE 54, ECE 75, ECE 108, ECE 109, FMVSS 109, FMVSS 119, Gulf standards, Saudi Arabian, Australian, FMVSS 139 (when required), rolling resistance to ISO18164, high and low speed uniformity, accelerated ageing, long term endurance testing, high speed camber testing, high speed variable slip angle, pulse braking, burst testing, laser tyre profile measurements, tyre dissection, load deflection, dislodgement.
