New figures from the DFT showed that over 100 cyclists are injured in accidents caused by crumbling roads, because councils are failing to fix potholes as they are not deep enough.
GT Radial and Poulton-Le-Fylde tyre retailer Carleton Tyres and Exhaust Centre have teamed up to host a women only tyre safety event. The companies hosted 24 female customers at Carleton’s Bipsham Road premises, presenting a general tyre safety overview, including advice on checking tyres, measuring tread depths, legal limits and stopping distances.
Vehicle management group LeasePlan UK is to introduce a new Driver Pack including a dashboard camera (dash cam) in its vehicles as standard. LeasePlan says it is the only vehicle leasing company in the UK to offer this pack to all drivers.
The Daily Telegraph Motoring column, Honest John, has recently produced an article detailing the cars with the greatest MOT failure rates in the UK, along with the regions with vehicles most likely to fail the test. Analysis of more than 400m MOT records from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) by consumer website HonestJohn.co.uk shows that one in six cars fails its first test, with brakes, lighting and tyres among the most-common reasons.
In the three months since the Tyred Campaign for a ban of all tyres older than ten years on all commercial vehicles launched, support has been forthcoming from a broad base of sources. TyreSafe has started the 2017 Tyre Safety Month with a question: Are you having a Good or Bad Air Day? The organisation is taking on the rampant underinflation of tyres in the UK; its figures show that more than half the tyres on Britain’s cars and vans are being driven at lower pressure than required.
According to LeasePlan UK, there are an estimated 3 million company cars on the roads and roughly 1 in 3 will be involved in an accident each year. Over 17 per cent of these incidents will take place on a Tuesday, with damages from fault and non-fault incidents costing companies upwards of £6.4 million over the past three years, just for the one day.
The latest figures from the Department for Transport in its annual Reported Road Casualties Great Britain report show the number of people killed or seriously injured in tyre-related incidents fell to 158 from 162. Slight injuries were also down meaning the total number of casualties was 876, its lowest level recorded. Following the welcome but slight decrease in casualties caused by tyre-related incidents in 2016, TyreSafe is urging drivers and stakeholders to continue their efforts, not become complacent. Indeed, Scottish figures were significantly worse than 12 months ago.

The tyre industry has been involved in numerous awareness-raising campaigns over the years. The quality and creativity of these has increased significantly, especially in the decade since TyreSafe came into existence. However, when Frances Molloy re-launched the “Tyred” campaign on 30 June 2017, you couldn’t help but feel that you were witnessing something quite unique. As most of us in the industry already know, Frances’ son Michael Molloy died in a coach crash in the summer of 2012 that was caused by poor condition, 19 and a half year-old tyres. In fact no tyres on the coach were less than 10 years old. So when she says that Tyred is all about taking old tyres off the road, people listen.
According to a recent survey, over 15 per cent of Britons who take their cars abroad have admitted to driving on the wrong side of the road and only 1 in 5 bother to learn foreign laws in advance of getting behind the wheel. Alongside brushing up on the rules and regulations of driving overseas, motorists are now required to display a Crit’ Air sticker on their windscreen when driving through the French capital. Without it, drivers could face fines of up to £117.
The Tyred Campaign – which seeks to address the issue of tyre aging is being launched on Friday 30 June, between 8:30 and 10:00 at Mercure Liverpool Atlantic Tower Hotel (Kilmore Suite), Chapel St, L3 9RE. Leaders from the tyre and transport industry as well as politicians and influencers from across the UK will be present.

The most immediately obvious sign of this is the company’s new corporate identity – arriving at its headquarters in Sharston, South Manchester, past visitors to the company will notice the new MWheels logo.
MWheels has continued to educate commercial vehicle fleet operators on the importance of wheel safety with the launch of a white paper entitled, ‘Evaluating commercial vehicle wheel safety – how to keep safe and stay compliant’.
