NTDA: Increased Costs Cause Chinese Tyre Price Increases

Significantly higher transportation costs for tyres from China will increase the cost of brands from this market by up to 5 per cent over the coming months, according to the NTDA. Commenting on recent increases in container rates from the Far East NTDA Director Richard Edy said: “Container rates have increased by up to $300 in recent weeks and the Chinese Governments decision to reduce export subsidies by 8 per cent in July will put added pressure on transportation costs which could have a marked effect on the price of Brands from China.

60% of UK Retailers Support Cold Weather Tyres Initiative

A survey of NTDA retail members has found that 60 per cent are calling on the industry to develop the market. The survey revealed that only 41 per cent of retailers actually stocked cold weather tyres (CWTs) and over 85 per cent thought that motorists still saw CWTs as snow tyres.

Commenting on the survey NTDA Director Richard Edy said: “Cold Weather Tyres have always been regarded as a niche market in the UK, unlike other Northern European Countries where the market is firmly established — even in those countries where the weather conditions are very similar to the UK.

Test Warns Against Retro-Fitting Run-Flats

The results of a recent Auto Express test show that motorists with cars set up for and fitted with run-flat tyres must not replace them with standard tyres. The test, carried out in summer 2006, demonstrated that fitting a standard tyre to a car which was designed and set-up for run-flat tyres can cause a loss of performance and ultimately a reduction in the safety of a vehicle. The results published 11 October show that using a standard tyre with the same tread pattern can severely increase braking distances and reduce overall wet and dry handling.

Brityrex International – Welcome to G-MEX

Next year’s Brityrex International exhibition (1-3 May 2007) will be breaking new ground, as the show will be taking place for the first time at the G-MEX Convention Centre in Manchester. The show is being supported by the NTDA, who have arranged their AGM and Annual Dinner for 2 May, to be held at the Palace Hotel. In mid-July, the NTDA held an Executive Council Meeting at the hotel and got together with ECI International, the organisers of Brityrex, and members of the press to arrange a familiarisation day.

Some Freedom for Shredded Tyres in Landfill Engineering

Defra has allowed some shredded tyres to be used for “certain landfill engineering purposes” after the landfilling of tyres is officially banned in July. The news follows research conducted by the National Industrial Symbiosis Programme (NISP).

Initial interpretation of the Landfill Directive declared that from July this year only whole tyres would be permitted for this purpose and the use of shredded tyres was therefore precluded. However, according to the NISP this move would have had serious environmental consequences; because NISP had already identified replacement aggregate as a re-use option for up to a quarter of this year’s UK tyre waste.

‘Many Tyre Dealers Still Fitting Lead Weights’

Many tyre retailers are still fitting lead weights and have not made plans to go over to lead free balance weights, according to the Vehicle Certification Agency in Bristol. The enforcement manager of the VCA, Alan Bowker recently met with NTDA director Richard Edy and reported that he was deeply concerned about the continued supply of lead into the market place and the slow changeover to no lead alternatives.

‘Without Us Britain Stops Moving’

As part of the NTDA’s series of 75th anniversary celebrations, association chairman, Martin Rowlands, and director, Richard Edy invited NTDA members to ‘walk the halls of power.’

On a sweltering midsummer’s evening the Houses of Parliament provided the backdrop for NTDA members to rub shoulders with parliamentarians. The evening reception was held at the invitation of David Lidington, Member of Parliament for the NTDA’s home constituency, Alylesbury.

In their welcoming speeches Mr Lidington and Mr Rowlands encouraged dialogue between the industry and government. “We value our relationship with both government MPs and the civil service and will continue to represent our members interests on government working groups covering scrap tyre disposal and road safety. As one of the guest MPs said: ‘it is important that a trade association has a voice and that we parliamentarians have an organisation with whom we can talk’,” said Martin Rowlands.

Throughout the evening guests had the opportunity to network with influential members of the tyre business and, in chairman Martin Rowlands’ words, “bend the ear of politicians, with a particular interest in our industry.”

The NTDA Approves the Aftermarket Show 2005

The National Tyre Distributors Association (NTDA) has confirmed its support of the 2005 Aftermarket show.

Director Richard Edy commented: “We are constantly searching for high profile opportunities to meet with members, as well as those businesses and organisations that play a major part in our industry. Our first experience of the Aftermarket Show proved it was an event that was capable of meeting our needs. With the show planning an even greater focus on the issues and opportunities that matter to the tyre industry, we’ll return next January confident of building on that success.”

Next year’s show will concentrate on core business issues, such as mobile fitting and service, tyres and the environment, developments in tyre technology and the delivery stream of wholesale supply to the UK market.

The Aftermarket show will be held at the NEC from 13-16 January, 2005, and will once again be staged alongside the Autosport International show.

TyreCheck Joins Forces With BRAKE Road Safety Week

The National Tyre Distributors Association has announced that, following the success of last year’s inaugural TyreCheck Safety campaign, the association has joined forces with road safety lobby group BRAKE for this year’s event. TyreCheck 2001 will run alongside the BRAKE Road Safety Week (31st March to 6th April) and is open to all UK tyre retailers. The 2000 TyreCheck found that 10 per cent of tyres examined were below the 1.6mm legal minimum tread depth.
