Well known tyre wholesale stalwart Dick Anderson died suddenly on Saturday 16 July. The news was confirmed by RH Claydon group business development manager, John Parker who wrote to Tyres Accessories: “It is with great sorrow that I must inform you of some sad news in that Dick Anderson unfortunately passed away.” Anderson, who retired just over a year ago, was apparently working alone in the garden at his old home in Welnetham when he suffered a massive heart attack.
One of the UK’s most prominent tyre suppliers for specialist application tyres, Speke’s Kirkby Tyres continues to supply Alliance, Double Coin and BKT ranges to the UK. The distributor’s product managers for the Indian Alliance and BKT brands – Ilan Goldstone and Dave Richardson respectively – told Tyres & Accessories that the brands’ continued growth in range coverage is being matched by the manufacturer’s focus on quality. Goldstone commented: “Alliance’s portfolio of tyres continues to grow not only in the industrial sector but across the whole of its product range. As a company they have identified and focused their efforts in producing some of the best performing tyres within their market sectors which has been aided by the construction of their new Indian manufacturing and R&D facility.” Richardson added that the BKT range is also expanding, with research and development “always at the forefront… On a recent trip to their factories in India it was clear to see as every batch of materials gets tested for quality every step of the way.”
While the 2011 CV Show was well-attended by tyre majors and equipment suppliers alike, there was also a surprising number of tyre wholesale and distribution companies present. These included Kirkby Tyres & Wheels Ltd and RH Claydon Ltd as well as Tyreline OE Ltd and TD Tyres. What the two well-known wholesalers (Kirkby and RH Claydon) had in common was the fact that both firms were showing the latest Chinese-produced additions to their respective tyre product portfolios.
India’s Balkrishna Tyre (BKT) is setting some ambitious targets for its continued growth. In 2009 BKT held a 3 per cent market share in the off-highway tyres segment (comprising Agricultural, Industrial, Construction, Earth Moving Equipment, ATV and Lawn & Garden), with an expected share for the end of 2010 reaching 4.5 per cent, according to BKT. By 2015, the company hopes to reach a 10 per cent share. BKT has grown its turnover from $82 million in 2004, to $220 million in 2007 and $310 million at the end of 2009. The production value for the end of 2010 is estimated to be $450 million.
Recognising R H Claydon as “the leading UK truck tyre distributor,” Infinity Tyres has appointed the well-known wholesaler as the exclusive distributor for Infinity Truck (TBR) tyres in the UK. The news follows “a couple of months of discussion and negotiation,” which resulted in the new agreement being concluded. Infinity truck tyres will now be available from all of Claydon’s UK branches – Bury St Edmunds, Falkirk, Scunthorpe, Stockport and Swindon.
After some 46 years in the industry, well known tyre industry veteran Dick Anderson retired from wholesaler RH Claydon on 30 June. Having started as a youngster in the industry with North British Tyre & Rubber (latter to become Uniroyal Tyres) in Edinburgh in 1964, Anderson says that he has enjoyed his time “in a fascinating and now complex industry” and seen the many changes over the years.
Balkrishna Tyre (BKT) launched its latest range of OTR radials, which are sub-branded Earthmax at the Intermat show in April. At present they are available in SR 30 pattern E3/L3 tyres in 25-inch rim diameter and are the first Indian produced all steel casing radial tyre for earthmover application. According to the company, the first phase BKT is to extend the product line up to 35-inch diameter tyres in various patterns with multiple compound options. BKT has also increased its existing industrial and construction tyre range, with expansion of its radial industrial tractor tyre segment and launch of AT 621 pattern tyres for Backhoe loaders with special cut resistance compound & lug geometry.
BKT boasts a comprehensive range of industrial, construction, material handling and earthmoving tyres from 8’ to 51-inch rim diameters covering wide applications including underground mining tyres and specialized port application tyres. Now having ventured into the Radial OTR BKT representatives believe the company is “all geared up to make in-roads and widening its penetration in servicing this market.”
RH Claydon is promoting a new marketing programme to participating Lassa passenger, 4×4 and van tyre retail dealers and service providers. Lassa tyres are produced by Brisa, a joint venture between Bridgestone and the Turkish Sabanci Corporation. According to a press release issued by RH Claydon, the company’s “collection for all seasons” includes Lassa Impetus Revo, Impetus Sport, Impetus 2, Atracta and Miratta tyres in passenger car, not to mention van units, transway and LC/R and more. For the past few years RH Claydon, in addition to being one of the UK’s best-known specialist tyre wholesalers, has been a name associated with quad bike racing in the UK. Through its 2006 and 2007 sponsorship affiliation with Paul Winrow, top rider in his competition class, the company successfully raised the profile of the BKT brand ATV tyres used during races. This year RH Claydon has become involved to a greater extent, strengthening its commitment to the sport through support of an entire race team.
R H Claydon marketing manager Dick Anderson has been in the business for a good many a year, and although semi-retried these days he has seen a lot of changes in the tyre industry, including the growth of the ATV market from next to nothing into the important and still growing sector it is today. Recently he spoke to Tyres & Accessories about the current UK ATV market in 2007 and R H Claydon’s role in it.
“I see the ATV market as being divided into three sectors,” he stated. The first of these, and by far the largest, is the utility/working market. This covers everything from farm and forestry applications right through to police. Near our head office in Suffolk some of the police are equipped with ATVs, complete with blue light on top!” The thin blue line reportedly find these vehicles invaluable for accessing remote places such as national parks and beaches.
As a major UK Tyre Wholesaler, R H Claydon prides itself on its comprehensive range of quality products to meet the requirements of a demanding industry, both user and service provider alike. The company’s truck market offering is no exception, with the prime offering being Matador, manufactured in the Slovak Republic, and which has been recognised for over 100 years as a major producer of quality products.
Bury St Edmunds based R H Claydon distributes tyres from its headquarters and a further four branches across the UK using a fleet of over 30 vehicles, the majority of which are Renault Master vans. The fleet has grown in recent years as R H Claydon has supplied customers in new areas.
British quad racing champion, Paul Winrow, will drive on BKT X-Driv quad tyres supplied by RH Claydon throughout the 2006 season. Winrow has been British No1 in Quad Racing for the past two years and has decided to ride BKT X-Driv in all his competitive races in Europe and the US.
RH Claydon Ltd has appointed John Parker as business development manager. The decision is effective from 1 January 2006. In this role Parker will be responsible for the companies equity and wholesale major accounts throughout the UK and Ireland.
