Michelin’s microchip RFID/TPMS tyre first of its kind

In something of a coup for the UK, Michelin chose London as the venue for the global launch of its latest RFID/TPMS truck tyre technology on 19 June. The UK truck tyre business, which has previously been referred to as something of a model for other mature European markets, was selected because it is an area where the French tyre manufacturer is dominant in the truck and especially bus segments. This fact also provided Michelin with a clear opportunity to implement its technology on a large fleet and thereby also demonstrate the performance of its technology to fleets and the market as a whole. Tyres & Accessories visited West Ham Bus Garage in East London to attend the launch of technology and see it in action.

Olympic debut for Michelin “communicating” tyre

For the 30th Olympic Games, to be held in London from 27 July to 12 August, Michelin is unveiling its latest innovation – the “communicating" tyre. By combining a tyre pressure monitoring system and radio frequency identification chips, the tyre maker is enabling public transport operators in London to enhance the safety of the tyres fitted on their buses, thereby immediately improving the mobility of both vehicles and transport users.

Fleets to benefit from Pirelli’s Cyber Tyre technology

Pirelli has extended its Cyber Tyre technology to the commercial vehicle sector through the introduction of Cyber Fleet, an ‘intelligent’ tyre that uses an electronic sensor and computer system to provide drivers and fleet managers with up-to-the-minute data regarding the tyre’s condition and the vehicle’s geographical position. The new product was unveiled at the manufacturer’s recent Truck Safety Day in Italy.

Cyber Tyres are Coming, says Schrader

Tyres capable of monitoring themselves, road conditions and ‘talking’ with a vehicle’s electronic systems are only three years away, declares Schrader Electronics. The automotive sensor developer has developed a sensor that is mounted on the inside of a tyre instead of on the valve or wheel rim, as is the case with currently available direct TPMS set ups. This sensor then transmits information wirelessly to receivers mounted in the vehicle’s wheel housing and via the car’s ECU to the driver.

Translogik Signs Exclusive Tyre RFID Deal With Qingdao Mesnac

Transense has announced that its sensor sales division, Translogik RFID Limited, has signed an exclusive global distribution agreement (excluding China) with Qingdao Mesnac Co. Ltd. for its range of RFID products. The tag has been developed to be embedded within the tyre during the manufacturing process, where it will last the lifetime of the tyre, or alternatively in a patch which attaches to the tyre wall, as an aftermarket solution.

Transense Signs MOU With Mesnac

Transense has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Qingdao Mesnac Co. Ltd, the parent company of the Sailun brand’s tyre manufacturing division. According to an official statement, Transense and Mesnac have entered into an agreement to combine their individual areas of expertise, for the purpose of developing Transense's patented tyre pressure monitoring sensor technology for the attachment or embedding of these sensors into tyres. Under the terms of the agreement Mesnac have agreed to an initial upfront payment and will pay additional sums for technology transfer/engineering support on an as required basis. Transense shares rose 17 per cent following the news.

Transense Forms Translogik RFID Subsidiary

At the beginning of June, Transense Technologies plc formed a new wholly owned subsidiary to supply direct to Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM’s), Value Added Resellers (VAR’s), System Integrators (SI’s), and in certain instances, directly to the end user. The product line will include the Pneu Logic Ltd range of commercial tyre inspection equipment, which includes the OTR Tread Depth Probe, jointly developed with Transense, incorporating a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) reader and the Transense SAW (Surface Acoustic Wave) sensor reader electronics. The company will also offer a tyre patch, which incorporates a Temperature and Pressure sensor, together with an RFID tag for “Cradle to Grave” tyre inventory purposes. Stand-alone RFID tags will be available for other asset management purposes.

Advanced ID Restructuring to Affect UK Operations

A letter to shareholders in Advanced ID Corporation, sent by company chairman Seymour Kazimirski on February 9, indicates that changes to the firm’s UK operations are afoot. Specific details of these changes and what they mean to the company’s Derbyshire based Pneu-Logic subsidiary, however, were not set out.

“As we enter the New Year, I would like to take this opportunity to summarise the goals we have established for 2009,” began Kazimirski. “You are all well aware of the challenges we faced in 2008 with the systemic breakdown of the capital markets worldwide. More specific to Advanced ID, we experienced the meltdown of the auto industry, which has greatly impacted the tyre industry. Estimates of decreased global tyre production are upwards of 40 per cent. We are working to meet these challenges.”

Arab RFID 2008 Conference Features Michelin Expert

Michelin Tyres’ Dr. Patrick King will speak at the forthcoming Arab RFID 2008 Conference. The event, scheduled for 12-15 October 2008 will take palce at the Moevenpick Hotel, Dubai. Other Arab RFID 2008 Conference speakers include: Ken Porad (The Boeing Company), Dr. Dan Engels (MIT) and Sybren Tuinstra (TNT Express). Master Classes will be held on 12 and 15 of October, while the main conference will take place from 13-14 October 2008.

Pneu-Logic Supplies RFID to ‘Leading European Aircraft Tyre Manufacturer’

Pneu-Logic, a UK subsidiary of Advanced ID Corporation has signed a new agreement with a leading European based aircraft tyre manufacturer. Under the terms of the deal, Pneu-Logic will supply and integrate its RFID technology and FastCheck Software with the tyre manufacturer’s business practices. Initially valued in excess of US$750,000, additional terms of the agreement are expected in a joint press release in the next two weeks.

Earlier this week Pneu-Logic entered an agreement to provide its FastCheck tyre products to Entyrety Ltd of Erdington, Birmingham, a leading provider of training and support services for the automotive and related industries. Using the FastCheck software, the new paperless system was developed by Pneu-Logic, working in collaboration with Entyrety engineers. The new paperless solution automated the old, manually compiled, paper based report, taking days and significant costs out of the fleet audit process. A major step forward for the European tyre and automotive industries, both companies anticipate the sale of over 50 of the new auditing systems within the next year.

First Stage in Pirelli ‘Cyber Tyre’ Technology Coming 2010

Pirelli is close to releasing its latest tyre technology – an ‘intelligent’ tyre fitted with a microchip within its carcass. Courtesy of the tyre’s hi-tech addition, vital information about the tyre and road conditions can be communicated to a vehicle’s on-board computer, thereby improving the car’s electronic control and warning the driver of any potential problems.

Tyre RFID Quality Guidelines Released

AIM Global, a trade association recognised as an authority on automatic identification and mobility, has announced the public release of new guidelines for the verification and qualification of design and manufacture for RFID chips and transponders in tyres. The guidelines were produced by the RFID Experts Group for use by the tyre and related industries in the development of RFID technology in new products.

The guidelines target item level tagging where the RFID tag may be present in various formats, including a label, incorporated into a patch that is permanently affixed to the inner or outer surface of a tyre, or incorporated during manufacture into the structure of the tyre as an integral component.

Pneu-Logic to Supply 2 million RFID Chips to Mesnac in China

Advanced ID, a leading supplier of RFID systems to the tyre industry, is to supply millions of RFID chips to Mesnac through its Pneu-Logic division. Mesnac, a leading Chinese tyre production equipment and software maker yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding to buy a minimum of 2 million chips. The agreement also includes a quantity of RFID readers. Tyres & Accessories understands that Qingdao-based Mesnac is already working through a stock of 100,000 chips bought for use in a “range of testing purposes.” No details of the financial terms have been disclosed.

The deal is something of a coup for the Swadlincote, UK-based Pneu-Logic for two reasons: Firstly the scale of the deal ensures that there is a bright future for RFID use in tyre production, with signs that take-up could increase rapidly and substantially; and secondly because Mesnac is already applying the technology in both truck/bus tyres and passenger car products.

European Tyre Manufacturer to Trial Pneu-Logic Technology

Advanced ID subsidiary Pneu-Logic is reported to have sold a number of tyre maintenance systems to a European tyre manufacturer for evaluation purposes. The identity of the purchaser has not been disclosed, but the company apparently intends to hold a three-month long commercial vehicle tyre trial in Germany, Italy and the UK.

Pneu-Logic anticipates a major order from the manufacturer following the trial’s successful conclusion. “This is of vital importance to tyre owners and fleet managers as theft of bus, truck and off-the-road/earth mover tyres is common in many markets around the world,” commented Pneu-Logic managing director Laren Yeomans. “Tracking of tyres also enables us to document the entire life of the tyre – from point of origin through service repairs.

Advanced ID Gain 3rd Annual Nascar RFID Contract

Advanced ID Corporation, a leading developer of RFID for supply chain applications focusing on the tyre management industry, has sealed its third annual supply contract with Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company to provide the RFID tags embedded in all the racing tyres used in the 2008 Nascar season.

Advanced ID has worked with Goodyear for more than two years to develop an RFID tag that meets the challenging requirements of Nascar racing and the Goodyear Racing Eagle and Wrangler tyres used throughout the 2006 and 2007 Nascar seasons which have had embedded Advanced ID tyre tags.

According to the companies, Nascar is the number one spectator sport, holds 17 of the top 20 attended sporting events in the US, is the number two rated regular-season sport on television with broadcasts in over 150 countries, and boasts 75 million fans.
