Marangoni to Increase Prices in Second Quarter 2010

Marangoni SpA has signalled its intention to raise its selling prices in the second quarter of 2010. According to the company, the increase will affect all tyre retreading materials, marketed through the Retreading Systems division and all the retreads marketed by the Commercial & Industrial Tyres division. Further increases in the list prices of tyres for fork lift trucks are also possible. The latest news, which follows a similar announcement at the beginning of February, is attributed to the “continuous rise in the costs of raw materials.”

Retreads Gaining Ground in Germany

Statistics released by Germany’s Federal Tyre Trade and the Vulcanisers' Skilled Trade Association (BRV) show that while year-on-year fewer retreaded truck tyres were sold in this market during 2009, they gained market share at the expense of new tyres.

Goodyear Dunlop Regaining Lost UK Truck Tyre Market Share

2009 was a difficult year for the whole tyre business, but those selling commercial vehicle tyres had a particularly rough ride. With operators running fewer vehicles less often, and with the credit crunch biting at the heels of haulage companies already under pressure from sky-high fuel prices, there was considerable price pressure on premium tyre companies. As a result, last year saw the total UK truck tyre market shrink and some key changes take place in terms of market share. One key decline in unit share saw Goodyear Dunlop slip from 20 per cent in 2007 (third place) to estimated 9 per cent in 2009 (fifth place). With this in mind and in the context of the appointment of a new managing director at Tyre Fort, Tyres & Accessories visited Goodyear Dunlop’s UK headquarters for an exclusive interview with Nigel Sowerby, director commercial vehicle and off-the-road tyres.

Environment Agencies to Launch REACH Campaign at Brityrex

The Environment Agency (EA), Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) and Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) have chosen October’s Brityrex exhibition as the platform for a new campaign to raise awareness of legislation covering the chemical make-up of tyres and retread rubber. The campaign follows the introduction of European REACH legislation which states that extender oils shall not be placed on the market, or used for the production of tyres or parts of tyres if they contain more than the threshold limits of PAH (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon). The restrictions also apply to the marketing of tyres and treads for retreading.

Both European manufacturers and importers need to comply with the new ruling; distributors found to be selling tyres containing excessive levels of PAH could be faced with enforcement proceedings. One of the problems for retailers and wholesalers will be that there is no visual test to determine the presence of PAH, which means they will need to be absolutely confident that their tyre suppliers are aware of and meeting the tighter standard.

Michelin: Winning Customers Over to Four Lives

If a retreading themed interview began with the sentence “we operate no retreading business”, than the interviewer has either turned up at the wrong appointment entirely – or is speaking with those in charge at Michelin. The focus of the French company’s commitment thus does not centre upon a marketable product or item, but on a concept – specifically, the concept that a Michelin commercial vehicle tyre has “Four Lives”. “Our concept is the most economic and most environmental on the market,” Jean-Marc Lechêne told Tyres & Accessories. The executive vice-president and chief operating officer (COO) for truck tyres in Europe is convinced that the ongoing professionalisation of truck fleets in Europe will further increase the establishment of professional (service) arrangements.

Malatesta Pneumatici – A Belief in Retreads

Although the Malatesta name may not be as widely-known as the brands owned and promoted by the major new tyre manufacturers, the company behind this Italian produced range of retreads, Malatesta Pneumatici, boasts a long and solid history. The firm was founded in Rome shortly after the end of the Second World War, at a time when new tyres were in short supply and any means of keeping existing tyres on the road was highly valued. Company founder Alberto Malatesta built Malatesta Pneumatici into a strong player in the Italian retreading scene before handing control of the business over to eldest son Massimiliano. Today a third generation of the family is also contributing to the future of Malatesta Pneumatici.

Marangoni Becoming a “Global Player“ in Brazil

Although Italian firm Marangoni celebrated its 50th anniversary in the new Millennium, the year 2000 primarily represented a significant milestone on its path towards becoming a global operator. Today, ten years later, the Marangoni Group is, aside from Bandag and the new tyre manufacturers’ retreading activities, the industry’s sole genuine “global player”. The company has not only successfully established itself in Europe and North America, it is now slowly gaining a foothold in China. However in the last decade it is the operation in Brazil that has, above all, become the backbone of its global industrial presence.

Bandvulc Reports 50% Increase in BIG Tyre Sales

Bandvulc has reported that its BIG range (retreaded tyres for quarry and heavy application) expanded sharply in 2009, despite difficult recessionary times. According to Bandvulc, the company saw sales in this market increase by over 50 per cent. Bandvulc representatives commented that this because “customers are still looking for value for money and tangible longevity, not short term benefits.”

European Metal Recycling Chooses Bandvulc and Fulda

European Metal Recycling Ltd (EMR), a global leader in recycled metal products and environmental services, has selected Bandvulc and Fulda tyres as policy fitment for its southern UK based fleet operations. Adam Wilkes, Transport Manager for EMR‘s Southern Region commented: “We have run extensive tests and trials with a variety of tyre brands at a selection of our operating centres and found the Bandvulc package to be the most cost effective solution for our business both in regards to up front costs and final PPK rates. We believe in simplicity so chose not to run casing banks or value management of assets. The Bandvulc offer was straightforward and uncomplicated and hence, more attractive”.

Rösler: Kazakhstan Retreading Plant Now Fully Operational

In 2008 Dortmund, Germany-based Rösler Group finalized a deal with one of the world’s largest copper mining companies, Kazakhmys to install a turnkey retreading facility for Kazakhmys’ underground and open pit operations in Kazakhstan. 18 months later Rösler and Kazakhmys have announced that that they have completed construction of the new retreading facility in Zhezkazgan, near Kazakhmys’ operations. The plant has reportedly been in full production since December last year, retreading tyres in 25 inch to 33.00R51 sizes, with the option for 57-inch products. In order to secure quality, Rösler keeps a team of three retreading specialists based in Kazakhstan on a continuous basis to supervise production.Tyres retreaded in the Zhezkazgan facility are now in operation in copper mines.

B&J Rocket Appointment

Erhart Maegerlein has been appointed as General Manager of B&J Rocket Sales AG based in Baar/Switzerland, effective March 1st. Maegerlein looks back on many years of trade experience; he successfully represented the company in Hong Kong for 28 years. As of now he will be strengthening the Switzerland based management in all concerns of the sales regions in Europe and Asia. In his new function Erhart Maegerlein reports directly to Andreas Müller, Managing Director of the B&J Rocket Group.

Lanxess Examining Options for Brazil Retreading Chemical Production

Some 18 million truck and bus tyres are said to be retreaded in North America each year and a further nine million in South America, and to meet growing demand for the raw materials used in retreading both within the region and worldwide, Lanxess’s Performance Butadiene Rubbers (PBR) business unit is “considering the possibility” of manufacturing ESBR-BMB (emulsion styrene-butadiene rubber black masterbatch) in Brazil in the future. Options for doing so at its Triunfo or Caxias production sites are currently being examined.

Bridgestone Europe’s updated environmental report is a document the company says sets out its “commitment to high environmental standards and the latest steps to achieve them.” This third edition of the ‘Environmental Commitment and Performance’ brochure continues the focus on the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of tyre environmental impact from cradle to grave that has been a feature of the publication since its initial launch in 2006, and this year’s report also includes additional information on Bridgestone’s ‘Ecopia’ tyre range.
