The stated goal of OBO Tyres is to supply customers with tread that meets their needs. The Dutch retreader specialises in the off-road segment and offers tyre repair, pre-cure retreading and, increasingly, mould cure retreading. General manager Ursula Abels told Tyres & Accessories during Reifen 2014 that the mould cure retreading operation has become OBO’s most significant business.
Following a two-year planning and construction phase, Continental reports the successful implementation of the first operational phase at its ContiLifeCycle facility in Hannover, Germany. “Following the official plant opening last December, the series production of retreaded tyres began in the plant at the start of the year,” reported the tyre maker on 13 June. “With this, important goals in regards to product characteristics have already been achieved. Furthermore, additional process-related enhancements are expected due to ongoing process improvements.”
Alongside a number of new commercial segment products, including its new R:01 II truck tyres and H:01 coach range, Pirelli displayed a significant addition to its retread portfolio at Reifen 2014. The Italian manufacturer’s brand-new mould cure Novatread retread line complements the existing range of Pirelli Novateck pre-cure treads and is produced exclusively on Pirelli casings using original Pirelli moulds. Pirelli says the casings used in the Novatread retread range are solely sourced from its latest generation of casings and the retreaded tyres feature tread patterns from the Series :01 new tyre range, which was first introduced in 2009.
Vipal Rubber will launch a second new product at Reifen 2014, joining its VL140 on Hall 10 Stand 10C32. The Brazilian retread components manufacturer will prepare for its country’s hosting of the World Cup by launching the VT190 tyre tread for highway cargo transportation. The tread has small and medium truck, minibus, pickup and light commercial vehicle applications.
In late February, Germany’s largest retreader – the Günzburg, Bavaria-based Ihle Group – filed for insolvency. At the beginning of May, the local regional court (Neu-Ulm) commenced insolvency proceedings against the company after determining an inability to pay and over-indebtedness. The court has appointed lawyer Prof. Dr. Martin Hörmann liquidator for Reifen-Ihle GmbH while lawyer Alexander Reus is responsible for Reifen Ihle Service GmbH. The court has also appointed a creditors’ committee. Creditors will meet together on 25 June and, based on the liquidators’ report, decide how to go forward with the process.
In the two years since B&J Rocket introduced its ‘Airbot’ buffing tool range, the company says it has become the most frequently used working tools within the industry and in repair shops. The manufacturer comments that Airbot tools not only look aggressive, they also work that way, and claims greater efficiency, shorter buffing times, better cooling and longer service life courtesy of the tool’s open design and angled setup.
Vipal will exhibit its latest VL140 heavy duty pre-cure trailer and super single tread from Hall 10 Stand C32. The Brazilian retreading material supplier has taken its products to numerous trade shows already this year, including its home show, Pneushow-Recaufair , at the Expo Center Norte in São Paulo.
After almost half a century with Vacu-Lug, Alan Setchfield is retiring. Having begun his career as a yard boy in Grantham’s already long established tyre remoulding plant on 2 May 1966, aged 17, Setchfield can look back on a 48-year career, rising through the company. “I’ve enjoyed the journey and made many friends along the way,” he said, “But don’t worry, there’s plenty of tread left on this tyre for many miles to come!”

Marangoni Commercial & Industrial Tyres, which manages the group’s direct retreading business often through the Marix brand backs geolocation as an innovative tool for improving efficiency in sales and service.
For an organisation like Marangoni Commercial & Industrial Tyres – which covers the whole of Italy and comprises agents specialising in the sale of tyres for industrial applications (specifically truck and earthmover tyres), as well as in the selection and collection of casings – efficiency and response to customer needs are critical success factors.
Business within the European retreading market is being subjected to centrifugal forces. While the tyre majors who supplement their new tyre portfolios with mould cure retreaded lines increasingly monopolise the growing premium segment, the budget segment is also enjoying growing attention. Competition is stiff in both segments and mid-range suppliers find themselves under increasing pressure, and as a consequence are striving to reposition and – particularly on the flanks of their markets – more broadly position themselves. The latest company to introduce a clear multi-brand strategy is Bridgestone Bandag. Its “premium Bandag retreading brand” will retain its strong position at the upper end of the market, and has been joined by a new product line for the budget market: “Protread by Bandag”. Speaking with Tyres & Accessories, the company outlines its plans and motivations.
Pirelli has heavily invested in the commercial vehicle tyre segment for a number of years now. This investment has covered the development of technologically-advanced tyres and the company’s outstanding fleet segment service portfolio. The overall aim is to minimise vehicle operating costs, which today represents the central criterion for companies needing to mimimise cost per mile in order to remain competitive within their respective markets. Following this logic, retreading naturally plays an increasingly strategic role.
