Wacol, in the outer suburbs of Brisbane, is in a region of Australia that enjoys more than 260 days of full or partial sunshine a year. It is also home to Bridgestone’s sole manufacturing facility in the country, the retreading plant operated by Bridgestone Australia subsidiary Bandag Manufacturing Pty Ltd. Bridgestone reports it is now utilising the sunshine in Wacol at the facility following the installation of two 100 kilowatt solar power systems.
Vipal Rubber’s New Zealand partner, Power Retreads, has opened a new manufacturing unit in Hastings on the country’s North Island. During the opening, which took place last month, guests were able tour the premises and learn more about the products and procedure.
Vipal has worked in partnership with Power Retreads since 2007. That is why on this occasion Vipal’s representatives gave the firm an acknowledgement plate for the work it has performed in the last 7 years.
Starting January 2015, Dutch retreader Obo Tyres has entered the new tyre business and is distributing certain Techking tyre lines. This new venture draws upon the company’s half-century of expertise in the retreading segment, and provides customers with a package that covers the full tyre casing life.
Kraiburg Austria changed its outer envelope range to the new Kraiburg LD series as of January 2015. LD stands for Long Durability, which equates to long life. According to the company, the outer envelopes offer easy vacuum drawing and handling during the process of enveloping and are “decisive in addition to the lifetime for the retreaders”.
Marangoni Retreading Systems Deutschland GmbH has named Gummiservice Produksjon A/S from Rade, Norway as the latest member of the Marangoni Ringtread network.
According to the company, retreads 40,000 tyres a year and is therefore a significant player in the Norwegian and Swedish markets.
The retreading business belonging to insolvent German tyre company the Reifen Ihle Group now has a new owner. The sales contract was signed late last Friday, and follows the divestment of the firm’s 12 Point S tyre retail centres to regional retailer Reifen Müller at the end of October. R-I-G Technische Produkte GmbH has been acquired by Frankfurt am Main-based holding company Prolimity Capital Partners and will now be operated under a new entity, Rigdon GmbH.
Italian retreading products manufacturer M.I.G. Srl is one of the latest companies to become a member of the Retread Tire Association. The company is one of five named in the RTA’s latest membership update; the others are US-based firms Carbon Activated Corp, Great Lakes Tire LLC and Smith Bros. Tire Service, along with Canada’s Jay Tomlinson Tires. Several other companies have also recently joined, however their identities have not been disclosed.
Vacu-Lug Traction Tyres has launched the first in its new flagship range of commercial vehicle drive axle tyres, inspired by the latest production techniques and technologies used in aircraft and high-performance tyres. According to the company, the Vacu-Lug Logistik range is designed to offer operators the “very, very lowest costs per kilometre”.
Grantham-based commercial tyre remoulding specialist Vacu-Lug has already launched its Logistik 295/80R22.5 drive tyre, in its new Logistik drive pattern. The 315/70R22.5 tyre is poised to launch early in the New Year.
Spain-based retreader Insa Turbo has named Salvador Pérez Lucena its commercial director. In his new position, Pérez Lucena will be involved with the Insa Turbo brand and other Grupo Soledad companies, including retreader and rubber compound manufacturer MCE Mezclas Caucho and rubber automotive components manufacturer Cauchos Verdú. Insa Turbo says the appointment was made “in order to revitalise the company and achieve new goals of positioning and expansion in the sector, both nationally and internationally.”

A little more than a year after the inauguration of its new plant in Rosario (Santa Fe province), Marangoni Argentina has further expanded its operations with the installation of a fifth 4-metre press for Unitread and Precauch flat pre-cure retread strips, plus two other presses for the production of Ringtreads. The presses will commence operation shortly.
Weak demand and aggressive competition has led to seven-figure losses at the Laurent Reifen retreading plant in Germany, and in response the Michelin-owned company has decided to close its pre-cure retreading operations and lay off almost a quarter of its workforce. But it is questionable whether this measure will suffice to halt the flow of red ink required to write the firm’s balance sheet in recent years; apparently the complete closure of the Laurent Reifen site near Berlin has already been internally discussed.

Just over six months since the last time Tyres & Accessories met Michel Rzonzef at the Geneva Motor Show, the Goodyear executive has switched segments. When we met before he was vice president of the Consumer Tire Business at Goodyear EMEA. Now he is vice president of Commercial Tires EMEA. So, with the move from consumer to commercial still relatively fresh, T&A took the opportunity to discuss the development and direction of the truck and fleet tyre business with Rzonzef during the course of the recent Goodyear Fleet Symposium in Brussels on 14 October. Henk van Tuyl, Goodyear’s director of regional technology – Heavy Tires EMEA, also joined in with the conversation.
