Stoke-on-Trent Tyre Firm Stung by Credit Card Fraudsters

Kevin Ecclestone’s For Tyres shop in Bucknall, Stoke-on-Trent has lost nearly £600 after Streamline – his credit card handler – reclaimed the money paid by people using cloned cards, reports The Sentinel. “They are all people who have seen us trading on the internet,” Ecclestone told the local paper. “They ring up and pay over the phone with a credit card before the tyres are picked up. When you say they can pay when they collect they make up an excuse, like they need to send someone else to get the tyres.”

Avon Announces Competition Winner of TVR Sportscar

Avon Tyres has named Ipswich resident Stacey Biltcliffe as the winner of its competition, with the first prize a TVR Tamora, a powerful British sportscar considered a modern day classic among enthusiasts. The British tyre brand, which originally supplied OE fitment tyres for the TVR Tamora, gave away the 330bhp, 3.6-litre car in its competition open to any customer purchasing a set of four Avon tyres. The brand supported the promotion in dealers with point of sale materials including posters and leaflets, and via a promotional website.

How do Mobile Apps fit into Tyre Sales and Marketing?

Buying tyres was originally an exclusively face-to-face experience. But it didn’t take long for the role of the telephone to become an integral part of consumer tyre buying research. The latest technological step forward saw the Internet become a sales channel in and of itself, not to mention a vital tool for wholesalers with the right business-to-business e-commerce systems. Now with some sources putting online tyre market share just shy of double figures, could the fast-growing mobile Internet market driven by the latest generations such as the Apple iPhone represent another new sales and marketing territory for tyre companies?

With mobile phone technology accelerating at a rate of knots, and following the recent high profile launch of Apple’s iPhone 4, Tyres & Accessories took the opportunity to survey the two leading online application markets for a glimpse into the future of online tyre selling. Apple’s App Store and its only real competitor, Google’s Android Marketplace boasts tens of thousands a quarter of a million applications between them. These small pieces of software offer users handy utilities, games and – crucially for this market – shortcuts to news, information and shopping services. Well-known online auction site, a system that has been used to market significant numbers of tyres and wheels for years now, has been offering both iPhone and Android versions of shopping platform for sometime now, allowing uses to bid on the move, however so far there have not been too many moves in this market from tyre companies. That said, some of the biggest players in the tyre industry have got in on the act with their own mobile phone applications and here is a brief look at some of the best available today.

TIA Names Six to Tire Industry Hall of Fame

(Tire Review) The Tire Industry Association (TIA) announced the recipients of the 2010 Tire Industry Hall of Fame: Gus Hawkinson, owner of Hawkinson Tire Consulting; Nick Hodel, former CEO of Portland Tire Factory; Russell MacCleery, a retired tyre industry veteran; Gary Nash, director of OTR Sales for Yokohama Tire Corp.; Jerry White, chairman of White Tire Supply; and Don Blythe, former executive director of the Western Canada Tire Dealers Association. The Hall of Fame inductions will take place as part of TIA’s Tire Industry Honors event, from 18-19:30 on 1 November at Paris Hotel in Las Vegas.

E-Commerce Growth Drives Delticom Revenues in H1, 2010

In reporting its financial results for the first half of the 2010 financial year, Germany’s Delticom AG – the company behind mytyres.co.uk – observed a marked difference between the performance of its main e-commerce business and its comparatively small-scale wholesale operation. Delticom notes the continuation of the global economic recovery during the first and an improvement in conditions in most European countries, yet has also seen that within the “strong rebound” in its home market Germany domestic demand has lagged behind the improving consumer sentiment. Therefore, while the internet is “steadily gaining significance as a sales channel”, Delticom states that the late-cycle retail sector as a whole “has not yet been able to benefit from the upturn to the same extent as other sectors of the economy.”

RMI Call For Participation in Online EU MOT Survey

Retail Motor Industry (RMI) MOT chairman John Ball, is urging members, industry colleagues and consumers, to take the opportunity to make their voice heard by participating in an EU MOT survey, which runs from 30 July to 24 September: “This survey is a chance to make clear your view on the importance of the MOT and highlight the potential issues with and reduction in the regularity of testing”.

Analysts: Nokian Tyre 2Q Net Income 80% Ahead of Expectations

Following Nokian Tyres’s reporting of second quarter revenues of 260 million euros (13 per cent higher than consensus, up 36 per cent year-on-year), financial analysts have praised the Finnish tyremaker for beating net income predictions by up to 80 per cent and an overall “good quarter.” Searching the detail of the company’s second quarter presentation also reveals that, due to raw material price increases, the market can expect tyre price increases of 2 – 6 per cent during the summer and autumn of 2010. Other key company targets for the second half of the year include: to increase sales in all areas especially Russia, increase market share in core markets, and to “utilize the most feasible capacities.”

Maxxis Confirms Two More Performance/Tuning Show Appearances

Maxxis says it will promote its products to “around 75,000 performance car enthusiasts” expected to attend seven shows at which the brand will be present this summer. In addition to this weekend’s Ultimate Street Car show and the British Superbike Championship, Maxxis has today confirmed it will attend Total Vauxhall Live on 7 August and Ford Fair on 8 August). Maxxis is the exclusive tyre partner of Future, the special-interest media company behind some of the UK’s most successful performance events, magazines and websites. The deal guarantees Maxxis a prominent position within the Platinum Retail Village at both Ford Fair – billed as ‘Europe’s biggest and best Ford festival’ – and Total Vauxhall Live, a new Vauxhall circuit event.

Footfall Up Alongside Gross Profit at HiQ

HiQ has reported year-on-year increases in turnover and gross profit in its half-year report. Turnover has risen by more than 7 per cent, while gross profit increased by “a double digit figure”, the network reported. In addition, HiQ’s 145 centres welcomed more than 8 per cent additional customers. The fast fit network said its partnership-led franchise structure is a major factor behind the increases. The number of HiQ sites has increased by six since the end of April, suggesting this has had a strong role in the continued upward trend.

Hankook on Track to Achieve Planned European Market Growth

During the second quarter of 2010 Hankook Tire’s sales in Europe put the tyre maker in a good position to achieve its growth goals within the region. Year-on-year growth in the three months to June 30 was 17.8 per cent, with sales of products from its Dunaújváros plant in Hungary increasing 20.3 per cent year-on-year following a 17 per cent year-on-year growth in the first quarter.

MOT Rule Change Could Risk Lives

Following the recent news that Gloucestershire coroner Alan Crickmore called on the Department for Transport (DfT) to pay more attention to tyre age during MOT inspections, the NTDA has reported that it has also written to DfT on the subject of statutory testing. While not on the subject of tyre ageing, the NTDA’s letter referred to the fact that some quarters are suggesting that the currently annual mandatory roadworthiness test be made a bi-annual requirement. The DfT’s mailbag is set to get fatter still when Tyre Industry Federation (TIF) are reportedly due to put pen to paper on the subject as well. According to the latest NTDA e-zine email newsletter, the NTDA raised the matter at last month's TIF board meeting. A template is reportedly available for members who wish to make their own views felt on this very safety critical subject.

Stamford Tyres Probing Markets for Increased Penetration following “Foundational” FY2010

Stamford Tyres is a business of two major halves. Firstly it runs a distribution business in nine countries including its home nation of Singapore; secondly it is the manufacturer of its SSW brand of wheels and the owner of its outsourced manufactured Sumo Firenza proprietary brand tyres, which it displayed in Europe recently at Essen 2010. “We help the plants with technical assistance, with our own designs for products, and we own our own tooling,” explained the company’s CEO and president, Wee Kok Wah when Tyres & Accessories interviewed him on his recent visit to London following Reifen 2010. “That way we can gear our capacity quite quickly and easily. We have a large team of engineers in China to deliver product quality assurance. The product meets the highest standard that you want.”

Micheldever Tyre and Auto Services Commits to Motor Codes

Micheldever Tyre and Auto Services has signed-up to the Motor Industry Code of Practice for Service and Repair. The company, which sells about six million tyres a year, has subscribed its 50 ‘Protyre’-branded outlets to the Code aiming to enhance the company’s profile and reach while reinforcing its high customer service standards.

“The decision to subscribe to the Service and Repair Code was taken after extensive research into both our customers’ requirements and the need for the whole industry to raise its standards,” said Simon Hiorns, retail director at Micheldever. “We recognise that in many cases the motor industry needs to build trust with its customers, as over the years, this has been eroded by ‘cowboy traders’. Protyre has built a reputation for providing exceptional service, something that Motor Codes allows us to promote to our customers.

Kwik-Fit Appoints New Fleet Sales Director

Kwik-Fit has named Peter Lambert as its new sales director for Kwik Fit Fleet. Effective 2 August, Lambert replace Mike Wise who has decided to “explore other opportunities.” Reporting directly to Kwik-Fit Group Chief Executive Ian Fraser, the focus of the role will reportedly be to build on Kwik-Fit Fleet’s traditional tyre business through further expanding its Service, MOT and repair sales, reflecting the strategy that has been successfully rolled out within its retail operation.

Peter Lambert has 25 years experience in the UK motor industry and during this time he has held a variety of roles with Ford, Toyota and DaimlerChrysler. At DaimlerChrysler he was sales and marketing director for Mercedes-Benz Vans and managing director of Chrysler UK. More recently he was managing director for Rossetts Commercials, the Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicle dealer for Sussex and Surrey.

Pirelli Sells CPK Tyre Wholesale Business to Stapleton’s

Stapleton’s Tyre Service has agreed terms to buy Pirelli’s CPK tyre wholesale business for an undisclosed sum. A TUPE consultation process commenced with elected representatives of CPK on Monday 26 July. The sale is said to fall within Pirelli UK's strategy to focus on its core business, which does not include tyre retail or wholesale operations.
