Growing domestic, exports sales drive positive 2010 for Brisa

Last year saw an upturn in global tyre markets following the slump of 2008 and 2009, and in presenting the 2010 annual report for Turkish tyre maker Brisa Bridgestone Sabanci Tire Manufacturing and Trading, chairperson Güler Sabanci said “Brisa reacted to this positive turn as efficiently as it reacted to the sudden deterioration that was previously caused by the harsh effects of the global financial turmoil; and managed the increase of demand in a brilliant fashion.”

New warehouse to keep Delticom ‘agile’

In reporting its performance during the first quarter of 2011, Delticom AG notes that the past year demonstrated the importance of having ample stocks on hand to ensure the company can “remain agile” in peak periods. To meet this end, the company is scheduled to open new warehouse within the next couple of weeks. This warehouse is Delticom’s largest to date and the online retailer says it will “enjoy major investments into information, conveyor and packaging technology.”

Improved core business gives Nokian a ‘flying start’ to 2011

The quarter one results released by Nokian Tyres plc on May 6 show the group’s net sales to have increased 57.3 per cent to 289.2 million euros in the three months to March 31, 2011 and profit up 211.1 per cent year-on-year to 62.4 million euros. For the rest of 2011, the Finnish tyre maker anticipates operating profit, which during the first quarter jumped 241.8 per cent year-on-year to 183.8 million euros, will “improve clearly” compared with 2010; this may be helped by a 30 per cent increase production capacity during the year, largely in its Russian plant. The challenge posed by raw material costs remains, however, and Nokian anticipates these will this year be 30 per cent higher than in 2010. To counter this, Nokian is preparing for “further tyre price increases during 2011.”

Richard Lyons new GITI Tire Europe head, plus new European structure

GITI Tire has appointed Richard Lyons as general manager as part of a series of moves that sees the firm implement a new organisational structure for its European operations. The new structure, which took effect 1 May 2011, has been established following the departure of Michael Andre in March. Andre previously held the role of marketing director for passenger car tyres Europe and was managing director of the company’s Giti Tire Germany GmbH German subsidiary.

Hervé Richert, GITI’s executive director, international sales and marketing described the new-look team a “direct consequence of GITI Tire Europe’s growth of business over recent years.” Writing in a statement detailing the reshuffle, he explained that it also follows the company’s “clearly defined strategy of building on strong relationships with its partners and customers with a focus on key markets in Europe and emerging markets” such as CIS and Russia:

Bridgestone Bikers Club riding for Japan

Motorcyclists looking to combine a day out with helping a good cause may be interested in an event organised by the Bridgestone Biker’s Club. Scheduled for Sunday June 5, the biker meet will start from Wheelhouse Tyres in Birmingham; money raised will used to help victims of Japan’s recent earthquake and tsunami.

Point S – a ‘massive opportunity’ for independents

Last year a new name appeared in the UK tyre retail scene. At the start of June 2010 point S Development, together with UK Tyre Group, announced the establishment of a local point S network. At the time the UK based point S operation was the 19th national network to be set up in Europe (this number has since grown to 20), with the 50 or so outlets operated by the independent members of UK Tyre Group forming the new network’s initial core. At the time, UK Tyre Group directors shared with Tyres & Accessories that the plan was to increase this network to 100 outlets within two years. This has been achieved in half the anticipated time; after almost a year in the local market, Point S UK reports its plans are progressing very well.

Point S plans for North American growth now concrete

Management at Point S Development – the France-based operation responsible for developing the international Point S network – have spoken of significant growth plans since late 2009. Many of their goals have already been realised and today Point S is represented by networks in 20 European countries, making it one of the region’s largest retail tyre organisations. With Point S now represented throughout much of Europe, Point S Development is casting an eye across the Atlantic. Plans for expanding into North America on the drawing board since 2009 are now being implemented in more concrete terms.

Neta Tyre to offer Federal brand SUV tyre in Australia

Taiwan’s Federal Tyre has announced that its latest Couragia F/X asymmetrical tyre for high performance LSUV vehicles will officially be offered at Neta Tyre Service & Sales at the beginning of May 2011. Neta has been a family-owned and operated business in Queensland for over 40 years. Henry Lin, director of Federal’s Global Sales Division said, “We are proud to have the Couragia F/X sold in Neta stores… Federal strives to develop new tyres within the top-end of the touring category by continuing to drive quality and product improvements through the manufacturing and administrative processes.”

HiQ launches in-branch promotional magazine

HiQ has announced the replacement of its two year-old newsletter with a glossy magazine designed to enhance the retail experience of its customers throughout the network’s 160 centres. HiQ’s marketing manager Geraldine McGovern said that the magazine – called ‘Hi’ – will be more contemporary and customer-focused. The publication will have “a more premium look and feel, featuring more customer friendly news, while detailing the latest offers and promotions across the network,” according to a HiQ statement.

Wholesale changes in UK tyre distribution

Like London buses, acquisitions come along in threes – or so the string of recent purchases in the UK tyre distribution sector would make it seem. Between the tail-end of February and the very first days of March, it emerged that Stapleton’s Japanese owner Itochu had bought Britain’s largest tyre retailer Kwik-Fit, Stapleton’s had itself bought North Eastern Tyres & Exhausts, while fellow Grouptyre member King David Tyres had been sold to Malvern Tyres. And what’s more, this movement doesn’t look like it has quite finished yet. In February Harris Brothers sold its four branches to Micheldever Tyres Services, bringing the company’s retail depot count to 53 and counting. True, this overview is lumping changes in the wholesale business together with developments in the retail sector, but as history and recent events tell us the two parts of the trade are inextricably linked.

South Korea’s growing replacement tyre market valued at US$800 million

With South Korean replacement car tyre sales of over 8.6 million units worth US$800.9 billion last year, the replacement tyre business joins the rest of the automotive industry in being a major part of the entire local economy. According to GfK’s automotive retail audit sales in second half of the year climbed 15 per cent over first half and nearly 30 per cent compared to the same period in 2009.

Michelin and Double Coin sign Chinese production Memorandum

On 18 April Michelin announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Double Coin Holdings Ltd. and Shanghai Huayi (Group) Company to create a joint venture to produce and market Warrior-brand passenger car and light truck tyres for the Chinese market. The transaction is still subject to signature of the final agreements and approval by Chinese authorities. The new company would be 40 per cent owned by Michelin and 60 per cent by the Chinese partners. It will operate a plant now being built in Wuwei County, Anhui province, around 400 kilometres west of Shanghai.

Goodyear breaks ground on GHQ project

Goodyear has announced that it officially broke ground on its new global headquarters complex in Akron, Ohio today. Goodyear chairman, CEO and president Richard J. Kramer, Ohio governor John Kasich, Akron mayor Don Plusquellic, and Summit County executive Russ Pry made brief remarks, then were joined by a number of federal, state and local officials – all of whom helped negotiate the deal – to shovel the first earth. The project was announced several years ago, but the credit crisis and its effect on the manufacturer forced delays. The new facility is located next to the company’s Innovation Center; Goodyear will lease the office space until 2038 as part of the agreement and have potential options until 2093. The project is scheduled to be completed in early 2013.

Transport secretary hinting at MOT changes, associations hit back

There are signs that the government is moving closer to changing MOT frequency, despite the protests of industry experts and associations. Announcing a consultation on the proposed meaures, Philip Hammond, the Transport Secretary, said: “Car technology has come a long way since the 1960s, that’s why we think its right to look again to check whether we still have the right balance of MOT testing for modern vehicles. We want to work with the industry and motorists to get the decision absolutely right.”

Point S reaches 90 branch mark in the UK

European tyre retail franchise point S, which only entered the UK market last year, already has 90 branch members. This development will enable the European management achieve better forecasting and make the target of 100 service centres in the UK the firm announced at Reifen Essen and Brityrex last year a reality. "Our partner network in the UK is on its way to becoming the third largest national organization in the point S to develop Europe," said Jürgen Benz, director of European point S and point S Germany.
