Goodyear has released its latest all-season performance tyre in North America. Initial sizes of the Eagle Sport All-Season are now available, and the tyre maker says the full line-up of 47 sizes will be on offer by the end of 2013. Goodyear says the Eagle Sport All-Season is suited for a wide range of vehicles, from the Honda Accord to the Audi A4 and Ford Mustang.
While it sounds too dramatic to talk about seismic activity in the tyre market, the ongoing long-term effects of the various financial crises are continuing to be felt. Goodyear Tire & Rubber’s New Zealand unit, Goodyear & Dunlop Tyres, intends to sell its retail tyre and automotive service centre chain. The company is selling its 52 Beaurepaires outlets in New Zealand to local company Beau Ideal Ltd for an undisclosed amount. The deal is expected to close by the end of the month, the company said.

Automotive industry charity BEN has announced the appointment of Nigel Rothband to the newly created role of Chief Operating Officer.
The addition of this post to BEN's senior management structure is a cornerstone of the charity's plan for strategic development. Increased affluence and the rise of car ownership is creating demand for passenger car tyres in Malaysia’s booming central region. The latest GfK retail audit report shows that sales of passenger car tyres in the high traffic states of Kuala Lumpur and Selangor have been rising consecutively in the last two years, with the first quarter of this year reporting a surge of 14.6 per cent over the same period in 2012.
A new initiative to help garages and tyre retailers across the country has been launched by the Tyre Recovery Association today. The Responsible Retailer Certificate of Compliance will be awarded to retailers meeting best practice standards by a member of the Tyre Industry Federation Responsible Recycler Scheme. The TRA says that the new scheme is designed to help garages and retailers not only to manage their used tyre disposal in line with industry standards; the Responsible Retailer Scheme also aims to help compliant businesses communicate their environmentally responsible credentials to customers. Also launched was a new website, which will contain a searchable database of all certified garages for motorists and of local collectors for retailers.
The Al Dobowi Group has appointed Tom Edwards to the position of European marketing manager. Previously export sales manager at Cooper Tire, managing customer relationships across Scandinavia, Benelux and the Mediterranean, Edwards has ten years of sales and marketing experience.
With half of all tyres sold through tyre specialists, this is clearly the most influential route to market for tyre suppliers. Within this segment the balance of power is divided between a relatively small number of nationally influential retail chains and large numbers of smaller operators. In fact, according to the Tyre Industry Federation Factbook 85 per cent of tyre specialists operate from a single outlet. At the same time we have all been dealing with the financial effects of general economic upheaval. All this makes insights into the ebb and flow of the tyre retail sector all the more valuable.
Whether the occasion is a corporate presentation or a theatre production, the moment immediately before you set foot on stage is probably the most nerve wracking. With a triple dip recession narrowly avoided and some first quarter results suggesting that the worst of the downturn is behind us, this is probably a good analogy for where the tyre market at large finds itself as the first half of 2013 draws to a close. One the one hand manufacturer supplied unit volumes, such as the first quarter figures supplied by the ETRMA, don’t exactly make easy reading and there is talk of restructuring. But on the other hand the worst could be over.
