Yokohama to Enter Rubber Processing Industry?

Press sources say that Yokohama Rubber is considering getting into the rubber processing sector in an effort to secure supply of natural rubber and to reduce rising raw material costs. General Manager of Corporate Purchasing and Strategic Sourcing, Keiichi Sekiya, said the Yokohama “wants to get closer to the rubber plantation people,” adding: “it doesn’t mean we want to get into the plantation business.” Should the company buy some land for growing rubber trees, this would only be for research and development purposes, he said, with the results shared with rubber growers.

PCL Takes the Pressure Off Hampshire Police

Tyre inflation specialist Pneumatic Components Ltd (PCL) is helping to keep Britain’s roads safe by supplying its equipment to Hampshire Police. PCL’s D10 digital wall-mounted unit is used to inflate tyres on the force’s fleet, which must be kept in peak condition at all times, with safety of paramount importance. With 900 police vehicles covering some 15 million miles per year, Hampshire Police must source only the highest quality products to maintain its vehicles under guidelines outlined in the government’s Driving at Work document.

Amtel-Vredestein CEO Calls for Government Backing for Businesses

Michelin Executive Receives Award for RFID Contributions

(Akron/Tire Review) Dr. Patrick King, global electronics strategist at Michelin Americas Research and Development Corp. (MARC), has been awarded the 2006 Don Percival Award by AIM Global, an association for automatic identification and mobility and SCAN: the Data Capture Report, a newsletter targeting the automatic data capture market.

The Don Percival Award “acknowledges outstanding contributions to the advancement of automatic identification and mobility solutions,” according to AIM Global, and was presented to King in recognition of his work in developing and standardizing radio frequency identification (RFID) tags for tyres.

King Wheels Enters its Second Year

(Australian Tyre Dealer) After a little over 14 months, King Wheels Australia Pty. Ltd. reports that its results keep getting better and better. Steel wheel sales are said to have “surpassed all expectations,” necessitating relocation to a much larger warehouse facility. Still based in Seven Hills, Brisbane the company’s new address is 6 Prince William Drive.

Visiting the “King of Moulds”

Zhang Sheng is the “King of Moulds,” he and business partner Wang Ying lead the Foshan Nanhai Superband Mould Co., Ltd., based at an industrial estate in Foshan town centre (Nanhai district, Guangdong province). And what’s more it is probably the largest manufacturer of moulds for aluminium wheel casting in the world. The factory produces six moulds a day or 2000 per year says managing director Zhang Sheng – that’s not the capacity, but the actual output. In addition the company produces moulds for well-known international companies such as General Electric, Toshiba, Sharp and Sanyo in order to service their non-wheel casting needs.

Smithers Group Buys Rapra Technology

The Smithers Group, an independent testing, consulting and contract research organization based in the US, has announced that it had closed a deal to purchase UK company Rapra Technology. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. The announcement ends weeks of speculation of the fate of Rapra Technology, which was forced into Administration on 8 March.

Report Says “Give Motorists Data on Tyres’ Fuel Efficiency”

The Fuel Efficiency Study by the Transportation Research Board in the USA has called on Congress to allow the National Highways Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to collect data on the fuel efficiency of different tyres and to make this available to the public. The Board believes that, were they given all the facts, motorists would opt for the most fuel-efficient brands. If this were to happen, no doubt low rolling resistance and fuel efficiency would assume paramount importance in new tyre design.

Avon Tyres British GT Championship Begins

“A dream collection of exotica” is one description of the line-up of cars that will be racing at Oulton Park over the Easter weekend, as part of the Brookson DWF F3/GT Festival. Supercars from 12 manufacturers, including Aston Martin, Ferrari, Lotus and Porsche will contest the first round of the prestigious Avon Tyres British GT Championship. The front running cars in the championship are capable of reaching 60 mph in 3 seconds and have the potential to reach almost 200 mph.

Ford to Ask NHTSA For Tyre Age Advisory

(Akron/Tire Review) Ford Motor Co plans to ask NHTSA to tell US car owners to change their tyres after six years of service – regardless of their condition. Ford and DaimlerChrysler already advise owners of their vehicles to discard tyres after six years through their respective vehicle owner’s manuals. Ford claims its testing and research shows that the effects of aging on tyre reliability increases significantly after six years.

Higher Prices Could Affect More Than Wheel Makers: MEMA

(Akron/Tire Review) According to the Motor and Equipment Manufacturers Association (MEMA), aluminium prices are increasing dramatically and will be nearly double those of 2002 by the end of this year if 2005 price growth repeats. Based on annual averages, mean daily price volatility has increased from 2.31 per cent in 2002 to 6.93 per cent in 2005.

Max Power Returns to the NEC

Max Power Live, the UK’s biggest modified motor show, will be returning to Birmingham for its eighth consecutive year from Friday 30 June through to Sunday 2 July 2006. The number one custom car event, a collaboration between Haymarket Exhibitions and Emap Automotive, will fill 500,000 square feet of the National Exhibition Centre this summer.

The organisers of this year’s Max Power Live are expecting to entertain more than 50,000 car enthusiasts as they descend upon the NEC to catch a glimpse of the latest in tuning, styling, drifting performances and ‘In Car Entertainment’ (ICE).

Economic Influence Subject of MEMA ‘Landmark’ Study

(Akron/Tire Review) Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association (MEMA) has undertaken what it calls “a landmark study” to document the economic influence of automotive and heavy-duty suppliers.

The study, which is scheduled to be completed in November, will analyze the economic contribution of suppliers to the nation’s economy and will provide data on both a national level and state-by-state breakdown, MEMA said.
