NTDA Supports Drive Smarter Campaign

The NTDA has pledged its support to the government’s most recent effort to reduce CO2 emissions. The Drive Smarter campaign will encourage motorists to check their tyre pressures, amongst other things.

Commenting on the Drive Smarter Campaign NTDA Chairman John Tarbox said today: “We are fully supportive of any initiative to reduce CO2 emissions and especially drawing motorists attention to their tyres – all our research shows that motorists do not check their tyres as often as they should.

Safety Groups Team Up to Target Motorists

TyreSafe has become the latest organisation to work in conjunction with RoadSafe, a road safety partnership of companies and road safety professionals. This is not the first time the two groups have worked together – the Tyre Industry Council, as TyreSafe was then known, has conducted various initiatives with RoadSafe, and in 2001 the TIC gained a Prince Michael International Road Safety Award for its practical work promoting the dangers of driving on defective or badly worn tyres, a contributory factor in many accidents.

Love and Lottery Tickets

The British, it seems, have two passions: romance and gambling. A survey commissioned by the German tyremaker Fulda shows that 66 per cent of British people claim that they would take their partner out for a romantic dinner if they were given an extra £50 to spend a year, while 11 per cent said they would spend the extra money on lottery tickets.

Analysts: Cooper Stock Worth ‘A Second Look’

Shares of Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. hit a 52-week high on 2 March, despite reporting a more losses in its fourth quarter results. Cooper shares rose $1.18, or 7 per cent, to $18.24 in midday trading on the New York Stock Exchange. They had peaked at $18.45 earlier in the session.

Michelin Canada produces First X One

Just over a year after Michelin North America announced it would invest $92 million setting up production facilities for its X One wide single tyre in Canada, employees at the Waterville, Nova Scotia plant have produced the factory’s first X One tyre ahead of schedule.

Research Reveals UK Motorists Unprepared For New Driving Rules

Research by headset manufacturer Plantronics reveals that UK motorists are unprepared for the recent change to UK driving regulations. Effective from the end of February, drivers will receive a £60 fine and three penalty points on their licence, for using a hand-held mobile phone when driving.

Safety Group Warns of Used Tyre Danger

A prominent motoring safety group in the US has voiced concerns about the number of used tyres sold throughout the country each year and the unregulated nature of used tyre sales.

The group, Safety Research & Strategies, say that used tyres are often repaired, repainted or patched before sale, making it difficult for purchasers to get an accurate idea of their safety, and such tyres are the cause of countless accidents every year. “Without self-policing and a more transparent business model, used tyres sellers are courting disaster,” said Sean Kane, the organisation’s president. “Regulators should examine how to ensure consumers are getting safe tyres.”

Titan Names New Sales and Marketing Head

(Akron/Tire Review) Cara Junkins was promoted to director of sales and marketing for Titan International. Junkins was previously tyre technology manager for Titan, and came to the company from Continental Tire North America where she held a number of research and engineering posts. Junkins will be based in Quincy, Ill., at the Titan Wheel Corp. facility and will focus oin OE accounts.

Michelin Reports 16.4 billion euros Sales, 35.5% Drop in Net Result

Michelin’s full-year net sales totalled 16.4 billion euros in 2006, up 5.1 per cent following a 3.6 per cent increase in 2005. According to the company, Michelin’s price mix effect remained favourable (+4.7 per cent of sales). This, together with internal cost reductions enabled the group to offset most of the 800 million euros burden caused by increased raw material prices in 2005. However, the manufacturer’s net result was down 35.5 per cent to 573 million euros, reflecting large non-recurring restructuring and industrial plant closure charges. Operating income totalled 1.118 billion euros, down 29 per cent.

Chinese Tyre Production Reaches 283 million units

Data from Chinese National Bureau of Statistics reveals 2005 witnessed a sustainable and steady growth in the tyre industry. The data, quoted in a paper recently published by research and markets, reports that output reached 283 million units, up 18.7 per cent over 2004. Sales revenue totalled more than 80 billion yuan (£5.2 billion).

Scottish Company Set to Receive Funding for Tyre Recycling Process

A young Scottish company that has developed an environmentally friendly process for recycling used tyres is close to securing a million pound funding deal. RecyclaTech, established last year after being spun out from Edinburgh’s Napier University, is in line to receive this cash injection so it can establish a pilot processing plant, hire additional staff and look at ways to get production going.

Michelin Releases Longer Lasting Tyre

Michelin has launched a tyre that the company claims to be the most notable technological breakthrough since the radial technology was first applied to truck tyres in 1952. The tyre – Michelin’s X One MaxiTrailer – reportedly provides up to 50 per cent more mileage than a comparable standard 385/65 R 22.5 tyre.
