A Third of Motorists Drive Off With Snowed Up Windscreens

One in three motorists admits they will drive this winter without being able to see out of their windscreen properly, according to research by Continental Tyres. This will mean 6 million close calls on our roads this winter, as nearly two million drivers were close to crashing at least three times in the last year because their windscreen wasn’t clear before setting off. Researchers found most motorists think they are 'in too much of a rush' to fully defrost their windows and mirrors before heading off to work. It also emerged men are far worse than women at pulling off the driveway while peering through a tiny spot of clear glass at the road ahead.

Pirelli Negotiates Financing to Increase Slatina Plant Capacity

In late December Pirelli signed a 50 million euro financing agreement with the European Investment Bank (EIB) that will provide the funds to increase tyre and light commercial vehicle tyre production capacity and Pirelli’s facility in Slatina, Romania. This sum will be used within the context of the 250 million euro investment the Pirelli Group previously earmarked for its operations in Romania in the three-year period between 2009 and 2011.

Forth US Conti Tyre Verified for SmartWay List

A fourth commercial vehicle tyre from Continental Tire North America, the HTL1 super single trailer tyre, has been added to the US Environmental Protection Agency SmartWay Transport Partnership list of verified technologies for tyres. The HTL1, which, replaces dual tyres on highway or regional trailer axle fitments, joins Conti’s HSL2, HDL Eco Plus and HTL Eco Plus in this group of low rolling resistance tyres – this means that Continental now has a SmartWay verified tyre for all three truck axle positions.

Conti Extends Asia Region Components JV

Continental has entered into an agreement to increase its stake in Continental Automotive Corporation (CAC), the Japanese joint venture it operates with Nisshinbo Holdings Inc., from 51 to 60 per cent in 2010. This increase in shareholding will allow Continental's Chassis & Safety Division to integrate its airbag systems and sensorics business.

Sumitomo Entering Into Two Natural Rubber JVs

Sumitomo Rubber Industries has announced its intention to establish two joint venture companies in Thailand, together with Thai Eastern Group. One of these joint venture companies will centre on a natural rubber plantation, while the other on the setting up of a natural rubber processing plant.

Michelin Helps Farmers to Stop Throwing Their Weight Around

Michelin made a worthy contribution to agricultural vehicle safety during the summer through a group of experts in the field. The Michelin Agricultural Contractor Panel, made up of five agricultural contractors – all of whom are past winners of the Farmer’s Weekly Contactor of the Year Competition and benchmark industry specialists – met on a regular basis and used the Michelin brand to help communicate technical issues facing the industry. The five members, Jonathan Cole, Troy Stuart, Roger Dickinson, Mike Simpson and Daniel James, made their first panel appearance at Stoneleigh’s Agricultural Showground.

New Zealand Survey: Unroadworthy Tyres on 16% of Vehicles

According to a survey conducted by Goodyear Dunlop in New Zealand, some 16 per cent of all vehicles in the country’s major centres have at least one unroadworthy tyre. The 1,600 vehicles surveyed in the cities of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch showed a 40 per cent increase in tyre-related defects over a similar survey conducted in 1999.

EPA Study Shows No Harm from Crumb Rubber in Fields

A limited field study by the US Environmental Protection Agency found no cause for human health or environmental concerns with the use of tyre rubber in athletic fields and playgrounds, reports Tire Review. The EPA said it will use the information to determine possible next steps to address questions regarding the safety of tyre crumb fill in the fields. The limited field study was conducted between August and October 2008.

Eco-mineral recycling technology specialist RockTron says that, along with presenting details of its technological breakthrough at the Tire Technology Expo in Cologne, Germany on Tuesday 9th February 2010, company advanced products director Godfrey Short will announce “impressive results” from results of new research carried out for RockTron.

The high visibility vest, once the preserve of rail workers and those engaged in emergency services, has become ubiquitous. In his book ‘Pies and Prejudice’, Stuart Maconie refers to the reflective tabard, along with Greggs' pasties, as a new emblem of the North. And he has a point – people from all walks of life can be found wearing the high visibility tabard for workplace duties, changing a tyre or simply walking their similarly attired dog. And this army of fluorescent vest wearers are united by one common bond – they all look equally unfashionable.

Millions of Cars Lacking a Winter COAT, says Kwik-Fit

According to recent research by Kwik-Fit, millions of cars are heading out onto Britain’s winter roads without a “COAT.” This collection of letters stands for Check Oil and Tyres, and despite the onset of winter conditions, the fast-fit specialist reports that more than eight million motorists haven’t checked their vehicle’s oil and tyres in the last six months. Furthermore, some 13.6 million motorists haven’t checked their batteries, surprising really considering the high prevalence of battery failure in the colder months – Kwik-Fit predicts that as many as one in six drivers will break down this winter with a flat battery. A further 25 per cent of motorists, Kwik-Fit continues, have left their brakes unchecked.

CGS Tyres Names New Marketing Manager

As of December 1, 2009 Nenad Tutunovic has taken over as marketing manager at CGS Tyres. In his new role, in which he reports directly to marketing and sales director Andrew Mabin, Prague based Tutunovic heads up the company’s international marketing team. He is also responsible for the further development of an international marketing strategy and communications plan for CGS Tyres.

Conti Talks Fuel Savings With Fleet Managers

Continental Tire North America recently offered truck fleet customers the chance to go inside the complexities of fuel efficiency during the tyremaker’s “Beat the Best” fuel savings workshop at its proving grounds in Uvalde, Texas. Fleet executives from both potential and existing customers learned about all the factors that impact truck tyre fuel efficiency, said Clif Armstrong, CTNA’s director of truck tyre marketing, including tyre-, vehicle- and driver-related aspects.

Conti Opens New Romania R&D Centre

On December 3, a year and a week after its foundation stone was laid, Continental inaugurated a new office building for its Automotive Group R&D centre employees in the Romanian city of Iasi. The 9,000 square metre premises was erected at a cost of around 20 million euros, and will host the research and engineering brains behind all three of the Automotive Group’s divisions: Chassis & Safety, Powertrain, and Interior. Development activities at the new site will range from electronic brake systems and chassis components to hybrid electric drives and body and security as well as infotainment. In total, approximately 450 people are currently employed at the site.

Global Recession Costs UK Tyre Manufacturers and Distributors £299 million

The recession has cost the UK tyre manufacturers and distributors £299 million in lost profit during the last year, according to new research by Plimsoll Publishing. David Pattison, senior analyst and author of the Plimsoll Analysis – Tyre Manufacturers & Distributors, commented: “The recession has hit the sector hard with more than half of the companies analysed in our new report making less profit than they were a year before. The bill in lost profits stands at £299 million”.

When pressed for a reason for this collapse in the bottom line of companies throughout the market, Pattison suggested: “With demand so subdued and the resultant competition, many companies are unable to charge the price they need to make healthy profit margins. In the absence of pricing power many companies will have to make painful but necessary cutbacks in the next 12 month”.
