Conti receives test license for ‘driverless’ car

If we need technology to warn us about the obvious, then maybe it’s better to eliminate us from the equation completely – in the same week it announced plans to introduce technology that warns drivers they’re travelling the wrong way on motorways, Continental reports it has received an Autonomous Vehicle Testing License’ from the US state of Nevada. If all goes to plan, Continental technology could be present in driverless cars, which never mistake the motorway exit for the on-ramp, within as little as eight years.

Yokohama unveils drag-reducing ‘tyre fin’ technology

Achieving maximum aerodynamic efficiency is always good, right? Not necessarily so. Sometimes being a drag isn’t such a bad thing, as Yokohama Rubber has discovered. The Japanese manufacturer shares that it has developed a tyre that increases a car’s aerodynamic qualities – by making those of the tyres worse.

Extra languages, markets added to Bridgestone moto website

Bridgestone has expanded its new motorcycle tyre website across Europe with the addition of six new country versions and eight new languages. The site was launched in June 2012 in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish, with content adapted to Europe’s five largest markets. As of 1 December the site has been available in a total of 13 languages, with Czech, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, Hungarian, Polish, Portuguese and Swedish added to the initial five languages. At the same time, specific product-related country versions have been added for Austria, Belgium, Switzerland and Ireland.

Use the driving test to boost winter tyre knowledge, says Kwik Fit

Demand for winter tyres at Kwik Fit has quadrupled over the last four years, and the company anticipates a continued rise in orders. However the fast-fit network concedes that only a small number of UK motorists are purchasing season specific tyres and it says research shows that 68 per cent of drivers are uninformed about the differences between cold and warm weather tyres, while 23 per cent haven’t even heard of winter tyres.

Award acknowledges Bridgestone’s energy efficiency efforts

Bridgestone’s Rome-based Technical Center Europe (TCE) has won the Italian “E.ON Energia Award” for distinguishing itself in energy efficiency during 2012. The award, first given by the power and gas company last year, was received by Gianni Lampazzi, director of Tyre Development Operations on 29 November 2012 at the “Sette Green Awards” event held at the Triennale Design Museum in Milan.

Goodyear Dunlop implementing US moto division changes

Changes to Goodyear Dunlop Tires North America’s motorcycle division are scheduled to take effect on 1 January 2013. The company has announced that certain of its administrative functions will relocate from Buffalo, New York to Goodyear’s headquarters in Akron, Ohio. These include non-field sales positions, marketing, customer service, supply chain and non-factory related human resources. Goodyear Dunlop says the move will allow the business to enhance its customer service while also adding resources to the motorcycle division. Dunlop’s Research and Development department will remain in Buffalo.

Tyre centre will enable ‘a transformational leap in tyre technology’

As of January 2013, US-based vehicle manufacturer General Motors will partner with the National Tire Research Center on projects to improve fuel economy, including through optimising rolling resistance. The new facility, to which GM contributed US$5 million, uses state-of-the-art tyre performance machinery that will enable automotive and tyre manufacturers to replicate real-world emergency events and improve vehicle highway safety.

Added sound effects for EVs

One of the advantages of electric and hybrid vehicles is their quietness. Alternatively, one of the disadvantages of electric and hybrid vehicles is their quietness. According to an article in the Daily Mail, under EU rules these cars will have to be fitted with 'sound effects' (possibly replicating the sound of a petrol engine) to ensure that they are audible to pedestrians, blind people and other road users.

"Growing support for breathalyser tests in UK"

Online motoring resource Motortrades.co.uk have revealed increasing support for the UK to replicate France by introducing compulsory self-breathalyser tests, a new survey has revealed.
Earlier this year, our mainland neighbours made it compulsory for every driver to carry a minimum of two personal breathalyser kits in their cars – even if they never consume alcohol. The theory behind the move is that if a driver has consumed alcohol, they can make sure they are not over the legal limit before starting the engine. Those who are discovered not carrying the kits with them while driving face a small fine. French officials hope that the 4,000 road deaths of last year will be reduced to below 3,000 this.

TYM International opts for Cameo

TYM International is signing up to Cameo from CAM Systems to go live at the beginning of January 2013. The purchase of the Cameo suite is intended to enable the Norfolk-based tyre wholesaler to meet customer requirements by delivering transactional efficiencies through real-time reporting and management views as well as streamlining its processes to reduce its reliance on paper, thereby saving costs.

CARS 2020 – the main aims

Following the tabling of the European Commission’s CARS 2020 Action Plan to aid the European automobile manufacturing industry, there are a number of concrete proposals that are likely to affect the industry. According to the details, which we summarise here, the commission and member states must now implement the policies announced. In order to monitor this process, and continue the dialogue with the stakeholders a dedicated process will be established called "CARS 2020".
