Almost 5,000 enter Valeo Innovation Challenge

The Valeo Innovation Challenge’s fourth year has set a new record for participation. Nearly 5,000 students from around the world have signed up. In all, 1,628 teams (21 per cent more than the previous edition) from 80 countries and 748 universities have submitted their application in one of the two available categories. Some of the world’s most prestigious universities are represented, including MIT, Berkeley, HEC, Supelec Tokyo University, British Columbia.

ExxonMobil begins Shanghai centre construction

ExxonMobil has started construction on a multi-million dollar expansion of its Shanghai technology centre in China. The expansion is expected to be complete in early 2018 and will include a new R&D facility.

Michelin focusing on human-machine collaboration with university partners

FactoLab is the name given to a new public-private laboratory that Michelin has jointly set up with three research laboratories from Université Clermont Auvergne in France. The tyre maker officially inaugurated FactoLab together with representatives from the Institut Pascal, Lapsco and Limos on 10 February.

Design and architecture award for Apollo R&D centre

A second design-related acknowledgement has been bestowed upon Apollo Tyres’ Global R&D Centre, Asia. The facility, which opened last November and is located just outside the Indian city of Chennai, has gained an NDTV Design & Architecture Award 2016 in the ‘Architecture Award, Office’ category.

Toyo Tire expanding R&D capabilities at US plant site

Throughout the course of this year, Toyo Tire & Rubber’s manufacturing operation in North America will expand its research and development capabilities in order to expedite the development of both original equipment and replacement market tyres. The company has not disclosed the level of investment being made in the Toyo Tire North America Manufacturing facility, however it will result in a 50 per cent increase in the size of the research and development team.

Arlanxeo bringing testing capabilities together into China centre

The Arlanxeo synthetic rubber joint venture opened a new facility in China last month. Called the Rubber Technology Centre, the premises within the Changzhou National Hi-Tech District contains five labs and brings together its testing, mixing and production capabilities under one roof. With the new facility, Arlanxeo aims to position itself as an end-to-end technology platform leading the industry.

SRI: USA Technical Center fully operational in January, European facility in September

Since gaining a much greater degree of freedom to conduct business in North America and Europe with the dissolution of its global alliance with Goodyear in October 2015, the Sumitomo Rubber Group has striven to enhance its R&D, production and sales infrastructure to better serve these markets. As part of these efforts, the tyre maker has built a new, 3,500 square metre USA Technical Center on the grounds of its Tonawanda factory in New York State. Sumitomo Rubber Industries reports that this facility will become fully operational in January 2017. The company is also moving forward with the preparations for a Europe Technical Center, which it expects to be fully operational as of September 2017.

Goodyear investing €41 million in collaborative eco-tyre project

An agreement signed between Goodyear and the Luxembourg Institute of Science & Technology (LIST) yesterday at the tyre maker’s Goodyear Innovation Center in Colmar-berg, Luxembourg will see the two parties focus upon investments in sustainable mobility and next-generation materials. Specifically, Goodyear engineers will collaborate with LIST in order to make tyres more environmentally friendly in regards to materials as well as their production and performance.

Yokohama Rubber aeroacoustic simulation technology wins research project award

Yokohama’s research on ‘Highly accurate fluid analysis and data mining for next-generation silent tyre development’ has received an Excellent achievement research project award for general-use research themes undertaken using the High Performance Computing Infrastructure (HPCI). Yokohama’s research was conducted in cooperation with the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS), a research arm of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), HPCI is promoted by Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). The award was announced at the third project report meeting of the HPCI System Including K computer, held at the Kokuyo Hall in Tokyo’s Minato Ward on 21 October.

Smithers holds tyre symposium in China

Rubber, plastics and composites testing company Smithers Rapra recently held its first Tire Technology Symposium in China. According to the research and testing firm, the event brought together about 70 members of the Chinese tyre industry to share technical knowledge, regulatory expertise and business insight. The symposium covered the industry supply chain, including automotive OEMs, tyre manufacturers and retailers.

Bridgestone researchers claim to have reduced tyre wear by 60%

Bridgestone recently gave a presentation to the Japanese Cabinet Office on the subject of its “ImPACT” resource saving, strength increasing tyre polymer research project conduction in association with Tokyo University. The project, which seeks to bring government, industry and academia together are to: developing high-strength materials, making each component thinner and lighter; and to improve fuel economy and save resources through weight saving and increased durability as well as reduced fuel consumption. Initial results suggest the scientists “succeeded in the development of materials that [offer]…a 60 per cent reduction in wear rate.”

Klarius explains exhaust system back pressure: video

UK exhaust manufacturer Klarius has posted a series of web training videos to YouTube, explaining the nuances of exhaust design, and such necessities to engines as back pressure. Since back pressure is controlled by the design of the entire exhaust system – including diameter, shape and length of the exhaust and any baffles present in the muffler – Klarius states that detailed design and testing is a necessity. The company manufactures more than two million exhaust systems every year in the UK.

Kal Tire partners with University Of British Columbia

Kal Tire’s Mining Tire Group and the University of British Columbia have formed a research partnership that will allow the two organizations to collaborate in developing technology and solutions for the mining tyre industry.

In the recently-signed memorandum of understanding (MOU), both parties agree to pursue research and innovation as part of a partnership that matches expertise from UBC Okanagan’s School of Engineering with the innovation goals of Kal Tire’s Mining Tire Group.

‘Sustainable’ car goes on show

The ecological car firm Riversimple Movement employs 23 at an R&D centre in Llandrindod Wells, mid Wales and is currently crowd funding for their Rasa (Latin for clean slate) to match a €2m EU grant. The striking, gull-wing vehicle is capable of travelling 300 miles on a single tank of hydrogen, with 20 prototypes taking to the UK roads on a 12 month public trial in 2017 before the full production vehicle arrives late 2018. The Rasa is capable of 0-60mph in 10 seconds with a top speed of 60mph, and refuels in only three minutes.

JK Tyre to consolidate, boost R&D activities

India’s JK Tyre reportedly intends to bring its research and development teams together into a new RS 1 billion (£11.4 million) centre at its Mysuru (Mysore) site. According to IANS, company chairman Dr Raghupathi Singhania disclosed yesterday that facilities “currently spread over different locations” will be “brought under one roof” in a “world-class” centre.
