Micheldever Appointments Signal Reorganised Wholesale Structure

Micheldever’s Wholesale division has appointed Jason Burgess and Mike Hawes as general sales manager (North) and general sales manager (South) respectively in a new wholesale structure recently announced by MTS wholesale director Alan Baldwin. The new appointees will directly report to the wholesale director.

Alan Baldwin explained: “In order to further enhance our sales effectiveness and customer support levels across the UK, we have simplified reporting channels and responsibilities into two new geographical business units, with all Northern field sales teams and sales offices reporting to Jason Burgess, and the Southern operations to Mike Hawes.

Yokohama Releases English Version of its CSR Report 2010

The English language version of Yokohama Rubber’s “CSR Report 2010” is now available. This translation of the 32-page Japanese report released in September is downloadable in PDF form from the company’s “Environment & Social Activities” website at http://www.yrc-pressroom.jp/env_en/index.shtml. The report covers the period between April 2009 and March 2010 and details various aspects of Yokohama Rubber’s approach to corporate social responsibility.

Bridgestone Americas Announces Promotions

Bridgestone Americas, Inc. (BSAM) has announced two senior personnel changes: Stephen Brooks, formerly president, US, Canada and Monterrey Manufacturing Group (BAMG), has been appointed to the newly created position of chief information officer, BSAM. Barrett “Barry” Owens, formerly executive director, Process Engineering Development, will assume Brooks’ responsibilities and has been promoted to the position of vice president, Manufacturing, BAMG.

Sumitomo And Ruia Group In JV – Report

According to the Calcutta Telegraph, the Calcutta-based Ruia Group and Japanese tyre manufacturer Sumitomo are engaged in talks concerning the construction of a radial tyre factory in India. It is reported that the joint venture would cost around 500 crore rupees (US$113 million) and would either be a 50/50 project or with Sumitomo taking a majority holding.

Gajah Tunggal Boosts Profits with Increased Sales, Reduced Expenses

Indonesian tyre manufacturer Gajah Tunggal has increased its nine-month operating income (981.3 billion Indonesian rupiahs; £68.6 million) and net income (664.2 billion IDR; £46.4 million) by 29.4 and 10.7 per cent respectively on the back of rising sales in domestic and export sales during 2010’s first three quarters. A report by Bisnis Indonesia said the country’s largest tyre producer scored particularly high sales in the USA, which have risen 42.5 per cent to total 840.7 billion IDR.

Indian Tyre Production Increases 29%

The period between April and August this year yielded a 29 per cent increase in domestic tyre production in India on the back of a sharp rise in automobile sales, according to a report published by Business Standard. This rise is made even more impressive when one considers the spiralling natural rubber prices in the same time-frame. The report states that the major tyre manufacturers produced 47.1 million tyres in April-August 2010, as opposed to 36.7 million in the same period of 2009.

Goodyear to Announce 3Q 2010 Results

Goodyear states it will report its third quarter 2010 financial results before markets open on Thursday, 28 October. An investor conference call will follow the announcement at 10:00 (15:00 local time in the UK). Richard J Kramer, chairman and chief executive officer, and Darren R Wells, executive vice president and chief financial officer will participate in the call.

Pirelli Appoints New UK Truck Business Director

An important personnel change took place at Pirelli Tyres Ltd on October 1, namely Chris Evans’ appointment to the position of director of Truck Business, UK. In his new role, Evans will report directly to national managing director Dominic Sandivasci and functionally to the company’s headquarters in Milan.

Kingpin Agrees New Safety Measures After Fires

Kingpin Tyres has reportedly agreed “tough new safety measures” in the wake of three major fires on the site in the last 17 months at its Wem Industrial Estate premises. According to the Shropshire Star staff at Kingpin Tyres have agreed to develop “a safer set of standards for storing the rubber stacks and make the piles smaller to allow firefighters easier access if another fire does break out.”

Maxxis Again One of Taiwan’s Top Brands

For the eighth straight year, Maxxis has been listed on Interbrand’s ranking of Taiwan’s top 20 global brands, reports Tire Review. The company placed seventh for 2010, and was again the only tyre-maker on the list. Maxxis’ brand value was assessed at $391 million, an increase of 13 per cent from the previous year.

Mercedes Truck UK Subject to Cartel Investigation

The Office for Fair Trading raided Mercedes-Benz’s UK headquarters this week as part of an investigation in alleged price fixing and cartel behaviour in the commercial vehicle industry. According to a Telegraph report the OFT has also requested information from Sweden’s Scania and Germany’s MAN.

Robin Hood is arguably Britain’s best loved criminal figure, his dealings with the rich abundantly forgiven by his generosity to the poor. Gajah Tunggal Revenues Tipped to Grow 20% in 2011

Revenues at Indonesian tyre maker PT Gajah Tunggal Tbk are expected to grow by 20 per cent next year. An article recently printed by Bisnis Indonesia reports Gajah Tunggal director Catharina Widjaja as saying capacity will be expanded to meet growing demand; four-wheeler radial capacity will grow 5,000 units a day to 45,000, while motorcycle tyre capacity will be increased from 75,000 units a day to 90,000.

General Tire Debuts New Grabber Street Tyre in US

The success of the Grabber brand has been highlighted in Continental Tire the Americas’ decision to apply this name to products in General Tire’s truck range. Yet as the name suggests, the original Grabber was a dedicated off-road tyre with an emphasis on traction – and in August 2010 a new street version that combines off and on-road use was released in the US. Parent company Continental describes the latest Grabber as an “extreme traction tyre for the street and off-road,” a product that brings General Tire’s race technology to everyday use.

Goodyear Hiring Staff as Luxembourg Production Increases

On Monday August 9 Goodyear officially ended the reduced working hours introduced at Goodyear’s tyre making facility in Colmar-Berg, Luxembourg during the recession. Following an extended freeze on new recruitment the company is now seeking new employees, report local media sources. Approximately 170 workers will be taken on in the near future, and the production of truck, OTR and agricultural tyres has now returned to 70 per cent capacity; in 2008 this figure fell to 40 per cent. Management anticipates the plant will reach full capacity again in two to three years’ time.
