Super Singles Included in Latest Generation Goodyear Mixed Service Range

The new generation of mixed service tyres from Goodyear Dunlop Europe has been launched, and these products – the Omitrac MSS II steer tyre and MSD II drive tyre – enter the market along with the manufacturer’s claim that they will help operators save money in several ways. Amongst other qualities, Goodyear states the MSD II offers a 17 per cent greater mileage potential while both tyres offer good rolling resistance levels.

Continental Clarifies Tyre Labelling Report

Continental Tyre Group, the UK arm of tyre and automotive supplier Continental AG, has sought to clarify comments made on motoring website motortorque.com which criticised forthcoming tyre labelling laws. In an interview published on 4 May 2010 the website said UK managing director David Smith described the planned labelling system as “not worth the paper it’s printed on.”

However, Continental representatives said this was a misunderstanding of what was said: “In a response to a recent direct question regarding the upcoming EU label, the intention was to highlight the benefit to the consumer of the more encompassing tests carried out and published by a number of European motoring magazines and motoring organisations. It was also intended to highlight the consistent leading performance of the major tyre brands in these tests, regardless of which part of the world in which they are produced.”

Marangoni Promotes Marix Retreaded Tyres’ Zero Oil Compounds

Marangoni is promoting the green benefits of its Marix ecology range of retreaded clean oil 4×4 tyres, with the launch of the new Panther four-season studdable tyre, bringing the total number of lines in the range to nine.

According to company representatives, “mobility off the road and protection of the environment are aspects that are seemingly – yet only seemingly – incompatible.” As a result the Marix Panther features the combination of a studrable tread, zero (aromatic) oil compound, non-directional tread pattern with “very low noise and good driving comfort” and Q, S and T speed ratings (approved for up to 160, 180 and 190 km/h respectively).

Goodyear Launches ‘New Generation’ Mixed Service Tyres

At the Bauma show in Munich, Goodyear unveiled the first products in what it describes as being a “brand new generation of mixed service tyres.” The Omnitrac MSS II and Omnitrac MSD II form the foundation products in a range designed specifically to meet the needs of the construction industry and operators who encounter both on and off road conditions. Goodyear comments that the tyres have been developed to deliver users enhanced mileage and traction, along with greater damage protection.

TRA: 2010 Forum Day Bigger and Better

The Tyre Recovery Association (TRA) has announced that its 2010 Forum Day will take place on Friday 9 July at the St John’s Hotel, Solihull. According to the association, this year’s event adds a morning workshop dedicated to introducing tyre retailers to the opportunities offered by the industry’s Responsible Recycler Scheme. The workshop precedes the established programme which will follow in the afternoon and the TRA will this year organise its own Tyre Industry Dinner and cabaret for the evening.

Forged Wheels Move Into the Volume Market

When it comes to alloy wheels, there is no doubt that forged products are top of the tree in terms of strength, technological benefits but also price. However, while they will never be the cheapest products on offer, there are signs that their fitment is becoming increasingly prevalent in the marketplace, with some of the best known volume models now sporting forged aluminium wheels as an option. Tyres & Accessories interviewed David Yates, marketing manager for Alcoa Forged Specialty Wheels, Europe to find out more.

You might think that the recession would have put the kibosh on sales of what is to all extents and purposes the premium of wheel upgrade options. However, while the environment has been tough for everyone, things have not been as bad as could have been expected for Alcoa forged wheel. In fact, according to David Yates, when you consider the US-based company’s relatively short history of selling forged wheels in the European market, there is a lot to be pleased about: “The credit crunch has had an affect on us. Car wheel volumes have been reduced significantly overall, however these are growing “rapidly” in Europe. Although we [Alcoa] invented forged wheels 60 years ago, we have only been pushing passenger car forged wheels in Europe for less than 3.5 years, following the US model [of introduction].”

Klarius Launches Diesel Particulate Filter Range

Klarius has launched a new range of Diesel Particulate Filters (DPFs) for the aftermarket. Marketed by Klarius through the largest of its European manufacturing plants in Stoke, the new range of DPFs is said to match OE quality and is fully recyclable part. Klarius DPFs are also Bio-Diesel compatible, providing the vehicle was originally manufactured to run on Bio-Diesel.

Bridgestone Announces Tyre Allocations for F1 Opening Trio

Bridgestone has announced its Potenza tyre compound allocations for the first three rounds of the 2010 FIA Formula One World Championship. The supplier will provide super soft and medium compounds for the Bahrain Grand Prix at Sakhir, with soft and hard compounds set for Melbourne and Sepang at the Australian and Malaysian legs. The first three races see the return of Bridgestone’s challenge to teams in including two non-consecutive compounds, exploiting the FIA’s regulation that teams must use both compounds during races. This season will be the second with slick tyres, which made a return to Formula One last year after an eleven years absence from the sport. All four dry compounds have also been modified from those used last year.

Tyre Labelling: Safety Should be the Top Priority, says Kwik-Fit Fleet

The EU has agreed that all new tyres sold in Europe from November 1, 2012 onwards must be classified and labelled according to their fuel efficiency, wet grip and noise performance. Kwik-Fit Fleet comments that this regulation is intended to make fleet operators, company car and van drivers and private drivers aware of the individual performance characteristics of every single new tyre on sale – and the fast-fitter admonishes fleet managers not to skimp on safety or cost when the labelling initiative gets underway.

Renault Driver Kubica Expects Cautious Driving on Narrower F1 Tyres

With testing now well underway in preparation for the start of the Formula One season, new Renault driver Robert Kubica has suggested that the introduction of narrower front tyres in 2010 will mean that drivers “will have to be careful not to wear them out too quickly”, while teams “will need to adapt the set-up and weight distribution to cope with this.” Kubica gave a lengthy Q&A session at the launch of the team’s new R30 chassis in Valencia.

UK Government to Enforce Tyre Noise Legislation

The Secretary of State for Transport, Lord Adonis, has confirmed in Parliament that the EU tyre noise regulation (Regulation EC No 661/2009) has direct legal force and consequently does not require transposition into UK law. In response to a question from Liberal Democrat peer Lord Dykes as to what steps the Government plans in order to reduce vehicle tyre noise following the recent EU decision, Lord Adonis stated that it would implement enforcement powers and penalty provisions to ensure the regulation’s requirements can be adequately enforced in the UK.

Trelleborg Limits PAH Use Ahead of REACH Deadline

Trelleborg Wheel Systems has opted to use extender oils that comply with limits on Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) ahead of the January 2010 deadline. According to the company, the new extender oils will maintain “the excellent overall performance of Trelleborg tyres” while respecting the environment. European Directive EC/2005/69 and REACH Regulation EC/1907/2006 impose restrictions in the use of polyaromatic hydrocarbons in extender oils and tyres. Ahead of these regulations coming into force, Trelleborg says its entire range of agricultural, forestry and industrial tyres will now comply.

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH) are traditionally ingredients of extender oils that are used as plasticizers and compound viscosity reducers in the manufacturing of tyres. EU Directive 76/769/EEC places restrictions on the marketing and use of certain dangerous substances and preparations and has been amended on several occasions since it was first approved in 1976. The 27th amendment makes reference to PAH and was published as a separate directive, EU Directive 2005/69/EC, to highlight the restriction in the use of PAH in extender oils and tyres.

EU Parliament Approves Tyre Labelling Regulation

On November 25 the European Parliament approved the draft regulation on tyre labelling without a vote. This means that, come November 1, 2012, light and heavy duty vehicle tyres (C1, C2 and C3 tyres) will have to be supplied with information that informs consumers about fuel efficiency, wet grip and noise classes in any technical promotional material, including websites. Retreaded tyres, off-road professional tyres and racing tyres will be exempt from this requirement.

Unanimous Committee Backing of Tyre Labelling Draft Ahead of Vote

On November 23 the European Parliament’s Industry Committee unanimously backed a compromise draft of the tyre labelling regulation agreed by Members of the European Parliament and Council Presidency negotiators in early October. The committee vote is the last step before the plenary vote, scheduled for November 25.

UK Tyre Derived Rubber Materials Protocol Released

The final version of the Environmental Agency and the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) quality protocol has been released after approval by the European Commission. The 'Quality Protocol for Tyre-derived Rubber Materials', made public on November 3, finally provides a separate classification for rubber materials manufactured from waste tyres; classification as a product as opposed to a waste, as was previously the case, removes such items from waste regulation.
