European CV demand up for 5th consecutive month

Demand for new commercial vehicles within the European Union increased in January for the fifth consecutive month. Total commercial vehicle registrations grew by 4.7 per cent and totalled 132,503 units. Growth was sustained across the van, truck and heavy truck segments, while the market for new buses and coaches contracted. Out of the most significant markets, Spain recorded the highest upturn, with registrations rising 44.9 per cent year-on-year. Italy posted 12.2 per cent growth while demand in the UK rose 5.3 per cent despite a sharp year-on-year decline in truck and heavy truck registrations. Registrations in Germany rose 3.0 per cent. France was the only major market recording a decline, with registrations down 5.1 per cent year-on-year.

Age of new car buyers is increasing

A report in the Financial Times, which focussed on the expectations of German car producer companies, showed that younger people are shunning buying new vehicles. According to the report, the average age of a new car buyer in Germany rose to a record 52.2 years in 2013, three years older than the average a decade ago, reflecting a trend observed in other industrialised countries.

European car registrations up 5.5% in January; UK up 7.6%

European registration figures for passenger cars started the year on a positive note, with demand rising for a fifth consecutive month. Across the EU28 region, registrations rose 5.5 per cent year-on-year in January 2014 to 935,640 units. Yet it is too early to celebrate a return to more robust markets – the ACEA (European Automobile Manufacturers Association) points out that in absolute figures, January’s registrations were the second lowest January result since it began measuring registrations for the enlarged European Union in 2003.

Car registrations up 7.6% in January

According to statistics published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), new car registrations in the UK rose 7.6 per cent year-on-year. Last year’s best-seller the Ford Fiesta retained the top ranking in January 2014, with 9,072 units registered during the month. Ford also occupied the number two position, with Focus registrations reaching 5,333 units, while the Vauxhall Corsa was the third best-selling car in the UK, with 4,470 units registered.

Report: Automotive growth pumping up tyre market

The apparent UK tyre market is estimated to have grown by 3 per cent in 2013 at the behest of growing automotive market, according to Tyre Industry, a new market Report from market intelligence provider Key Note. Read a little further and there are suggestions that the 2014 – 2018 period could be some of the UK tyre market’s best years yet.

EU car markets all show growth in December

Figures released by the ACEA show that, with a 13.3 per cent increase in new car registrations in December 2013, the EU recorded the largest monthly year-on-year growth since December 2009 (+16.6 per cent). However, in absolute figures, the results were the third lowest to date for a month of December with a total of 906,294 units.

2013 motorcycle market down

“The motorcycle market fell 1.9 per cent in 2013 with 1,757 fewer units being sold than in 2012”, said Sue Robinson, Director of the National Motorcycle Dealers Association (NMDA) which represents motorcycle retailers across the UK.

“Overall, we anticipated the 125cc market to revive the sales, but after a positive start to the year, sales declined by 3.5 per cent. Other sectors including the 50cc and 651-1000cc machines also saw a fall in sales in 2013.”

Light commercial registrations up 14.7 per cent

The latest light commercial vehicle figures released show 2013 total registrations to 327,291 units, up 14.7 per cent. Vans rose 13.1 per cent over the year registering 271,073 units, boosted by 32.5 per cent growth in December. Truck registrations totalled 56,218 units in the year, up 23 per cent with the move to Euro 6 fuelling growth as predicted.

Year-to-date car registrations overtake 2012 full-year total

SMMT figures reveal that new car registrations rose seven per cent in November to 159,581 units, the month’s best performance since 2004. 2,111,819 cars have been registered for the year-to-date, up 9.9 per cent and already ahead of the 2012 full-year figure of 2,044,609. This means that the car market is on target to hit the SMMT forecast of 2.25 million registrations for 2013.

November van and truck registrations headed for best year since 2008

Total commercial vehicle registrations were up strongly in November, rising by 22.7 per cent to 28,057 units in the month says the SMMT. The year-to-date CV market is up 10.9 per cent at 294,991 units and on track to top 300,000 units for first time in five years.

New car registrations touching double digits across the UK countries

With 26 days till the end of the year, the latest year-to-date new car registration figures collated by the SMMT show that that registrations have been strong across the UK, but especially in Wales. Every country in the union registered near double-digit growth, with the slowest growth (9.48 per cent) taking place in bar far the largest part of the market – England. Here registrations in the period totalled 1.781 million from 1.627 million last year.

EU car registrations up in October, down for YTD

In October, the EU car market recorded a 4.7 per cent increase, totalling 1,004,935 units. It was the first time since September 2011 that demand for new cars had risen in two consecutive months.

From January to October, new car registrations amounted to 10,006,807 units, or 3.1 per cent less than in the same period last year.

Pirelli to lift tempo in Russia

At today’s presentation of its 2013-2017 Industrial Plan in London, Pirelli & C. SpA chairman and chief executive officer Marco Tronchetti Provera spoke of the need for a “change of pace” in its activities in Russia, noting that “we’re running late with our start-up plan.” The Russian market situation, and what Pirelli intends to do there, was then explained in greater detail by Gregorio Borgo, Pirelli’s general manager operations.

September car registrations – painting a true picture?

Motor Trader magazine, which focuses on dealer activities, has reported that last minute self-registration activity distorted the record breaking September plate change, with over a quarter of the month’s volumes being registered on the closing day of the month. But could the heady days of growing registration figures be over? Some analysts believe strengthening markets elsewhere could knock the UK market back.
