New passenger car registrations rose 4.5 per cent in June compared to the previous year, totalling 1,545,879 units, according to ACEA figures.
With regard to national situations, four out of the five main markets posted growth. Italy reported the largest increase (+18 per cent), followed by Germany (+8.2 per cent), France (+2.7 per cent) and Spain (1.8 per cent).
Newly released registration figures show that total European passenger car registrations in May dropped 1.7 per cent to 1,290,933, across the continent, with UK numbers falling 3.4 per cent to 187,900 units. The figure also show that in the UK diesels cars now occupy 36.8 per cent of the market, the highest point so far in 2005. Convertibles have also increased in popularity, with the sector now accounting for a record six per cent of May registrations.
The European car market rose 1.5 per cent in April according to POLK. Among the different OEMs BMW registrations were up 22 per cent and Porsche 26 per cent.
Figures were down 1.1 per cent for VW and 0.1 per cent for Renault. Mercedes brand sales were up 2.5 per cent. On the weak side: Peugeot was down 4.7 per cent and Fiat again very weak, was down 15 per cent. Overall, April was a good month for the premium brands, volume brands remained sluggish.

179,457 new cars left showrooms last month, down 4.0 per cent on April 2004, according to figures released today by the SMMT. The diesel market rose 6.6 per cent in April, up 4.5 per cent over the year-to-date.
“On five of the last six occasions, new car registrations have received a boost immediately after a general election”, commented Christopher Macgowan, SMMT chief executive. “However, March figures showed that the market had already started to pick up after a disappointing start to the year. April’s dip has largely been dominated by MG Rover but it seems that the crisis has not had a significant effect on consumer confidence across the wider industry. The market remains healthy with registrations expected to hit 2.45 million units by the end of the year.”
European passenger car registrations amounted to 1,709,616 units in March this year. The figure represents a decrease of 4.7 per cent compared to March 2004. According to the ACEA the statistics were affected by the Easter break falling in March this year, adding that there had been a, “sluggish economic environment in the first quarter of 2005.”
The UK felt a decrease of 5.1 per cent, along with Germany (-0.4%), Spain (-3.6%) and Italy (-8.6 %). France was the only country that posted a national increase, of 2.5 per cent.
The UK recorded 442,940 passenger car registrations in March compared with 466,954 last year.
Western European car registrations for February could be down by as much as 2.7 per cent, according to a Deutsche Bank report. Preliminary figures from Polk Marketing Systems suggest a decline of 3.7 per cent year-on-year (-1.3 per cent year-to-date). The report singles out Renault (-12 per cent) and Fiat (-13 per cent) as having particularly bad months, while VW brand (-8 per cent) stayed inline with the average and Mercedes (-15 per cent) failed to improve from a weak January. On a brighter note, the analysts point new model releases for the from BMW brand (+36 per cent) and Porsche (+15 per cent) as examples of European names that are doing well.
The UK’s February new car registrations are down 14,368 units or 15.7 per cent to 77,092. However the decrease was expected due to the twice-yearly plate change, reports the SMMT with February accounting for a mere 3.5 per cent of the annual market.
Commenting on the figures, SMMT chief executive, Christopher Macgowan, said, ‘February is traditionally a slow month as new car buyers and the motor industry prepare for the surge that accompanies the March plate change. After last year’s significant growth in the first quarter, we expect March registrations to fall by around six per cent. While this is lower than last year’s record total, it still represents a new car market in good shape.’
Total European passenger car registrations remained virtually flat, falling 0.8 per cent year-on-year. According to the ACEA, the association that processes the figures, “the relatively slow start to the year has been mainly driven by the drop posted by new EU member states (-12.7 per cent). Among the five main markets the UK (-8.2 per cent), Germany and Italy (-3.7 per cent) all reported losses. Meanwhile France and Spain both recorded increases of more than 6 per cent.
As far as manufacturers are concerned, Fiat Group registrations continued to drop (16.9 per cent year-on-year) as did DaimlerChrysler’s (-4.9 per cent) and Hyundai’s (8.9 per cent). VW and PSA group registrations both remained flat at 193,000 and 172,000 units respectively.
January’s UK commercial vehicle rolling year total was the highest ever, according to the latest figures released by the SMMT. The numbers show that the rolling total stands at 391,070, up 7.6 per cent. The year-on-year figure also shows improvement, having grown 4.6 per cent compared with 2004.
Commercial vehicle output in the UK rose 10.8 per cent in 2004 according to provisional data released by the Office for National Statistics. However CVs produced for the home market fell 17.2 per cent for the three months to December because of a focus on meeting European demand.
“The 2004 figures show UK commercial production figures over 10 per cent up on the previous year,” said Christopher Macgowan, SMMT chief executive. “Last year was a record breaker for CV registrations in the UK and it is encouraging to see production climbing too. European demand has helped export figures increase by 25 per cent and new UK product developments will help keep those figures up. It’s great to have so much good news from the CV sector.”
Western European passenger car registrations totalled 14,516,879 units in 2004 representing a growth of 2.1 per cent. ACEA figures show that 1,043,669 units were recorded in December, a 7.7 per cent increase compared to 2003 figures.
Four of the five main markets posted increases for December, however the UK showed a decrease of (-0.5) per cent with 2,567,269 units registered in ’04 compared to 2,579,050 in ’03. Germany led those countries posting an increase, with a 21.5 per cent rise ahead of France, Italy and Spain.
Belgium, Finland, Greece, Ireland and Portugal also posted decreases.
In 2004 new car registrations in the UK totalled 2,567,269 units, 0.5 per cent down compared with 2003’s figures. During the same period the number of units manufactured with diesel engines increased 18.5 per cent totalling 835,334 units. Diesel cars now occupy a record 32.5 per cent of the market. Registrations for the month December dipped 7.1 per cent to 144,353 units from 155,452.
Commercial vehicle registrations hit an all time high last year with a record level of 389, 923 units, a figure that was up some 9.5 per cent. The SMMT also recorded the highest ever December CV registrations at 28,470.
According to the society growth remained concentrated in LCVs, particularly medium vans. 24,021 light commercial vehicles were registered in December, with a total of 329,599 units recorded for the year.
According to figures released by the SMMT, car registrations went up 172,094 units (1.8 per cent) in November, leading to confidence that by the end of the year 2004 will be a growth year. This is exemplified in the fact that year-to-date figures are only 682 units behind the 2003 level. In order for 2004 to be a record year only 156,135 cars need to be registered. Commenting on the announcement, SMMT chief executive, Christopher Macgowan said: “November’s new car market was the second largest on record, boosting registrations towards a fourth consecutive record annual total. While the December market is difficult to predict, 156,135 new cars would see another record total. With Christmas coming, it remains to be seen if enough people have a new car on their gift list.”
