UK Heavy Vehicle Sales Plummet During February

Monthly figures released by the ACEA show dismal UK sales of heavy commercial vehicles for February 2007 compared with data recorded a year earlier. These results contrasted with Europe-wide figures that revealed mild growth in most market segments.

New UK registrations of commercial vehicles weighing 16 tonnes and over were down by 28.4 per cent on February 2006, with only 1,372 vehicle registrations. This was the largest percentage decrease measured anywhere in Europe, and the ACEA attribute these figures to the decline in orders experienced after the Euro 4 emission regulation came into effect last October. Throughout the EU an average 11.2 per cent increase in registrations was recorded.

Passenger Car Registrations Show Mixed Results

Passenger car registrations across the 15 established European Union states are showing signs of a slight decrease compared with 12 months ago, according to figures released by the ACEA on March 15. Throughout this entire region a total of 975,666 new passenger cars were registered in February 2007, a 3.5 per cent dip compared with February 2006 registrations. The scenario in the UK market was in line with this trend, with February 2007’s new car registrations – 73,586 new passenger cars – 3.2 per cent lower than the number recorded a year before. However new car registrations are traditionally low in the UK during February due to the March number plate changeover, and it must be pointed out that combined January/February 2007 new car registrations totalled 239,189, a 2.5 per cent increase on 2006 and bucking EU15 trends, where a 1.5 per cent decrease was recorded.

2006 a Slower Year for Commercial Vehicle Registrations

The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association, the ACEA, has released their figures for the number of commercial vehicles first registered within the European Union and within the UK during 2006. The figures showed a general trend towards slow or negative growth in the UK market with a solitary exception.

Dunlop Seat Leon to Run in Sport Maxx Cup

The grid for the inaugural 2007 BARC/Dunlop Sport Maxx Cup has been boosted with the announcement that Dunlop is to run a SEAT Leon FR as a VIP/guest car in the series. he 200hp Leon FR will compete in Class C of the Cup, against cars such as the Renault Clio 172, Citroen C4VTS, Mini Cooper S and MG ZS180. The car is being built by multiple Fiat Challenge Champions, AMR Racing, and team owner Adrian Miller is also talking to two other drivers about running sister cars to the Dunlop entry.

Hungary Attracts International Tyre Companies

Hungary is one of the few Eastern European countries in which there is no traditional automobile industry. Among the few well-known companies the bus manufacturer Ikarus (one of Eastern European market leaders) is the most commonly known. Nevertheless since the early 1990s some Western manufacturers have installed production or assembly plants there, namely General Motors, Suzuki and Audi. (Audi Hungary Kft is actually the second biggest company in the Hugarian economy). These foreign investments were partly induced by tax exemptions and other incentives like tax-free import of parts, etc. Last year 136,130 cars were produced in Hungary and new car registrations almost reached 200,000 units. This is when Hungary becomes of interest to Western tyre manufacturers.

Goodyear Says Plants Pass Quality Audits

(Akron/Tire Review) Trying to counter striking worker questions about the quality of tyres being made by temporary workers at Goodyear tyre plants, the tyremaker said that independent quality audits of three of its tyre plants found the company was in 100 per cent compliance with its quality standards. Goodyear said that NSF Industrial Strategic Registrations audits at its Buffalo, Danville, Va., and Fayetteville, N.C. plants – all being struck by the United Steelworkers – found Goodyear’s systems in complete compliance to international quality systems standards.

European New Car Market Grows 2.7 per cent to May 2006

Jato Dynamics’ analysis of new car registrations in the EU and EFTA region for the first five months of 2006 shows that the overall European market for new cars rose by 2.7 per cent compared with the same period in 2005, to a total volume of 6,918,355 units.

Year-to-date (YTD) growth was significantly higher than in April, due to an overall rise of 10.6 per cent in the European market for new cars in May 2006 (a total volume for the month of 1,455,421 units).

Analysts Point to Boom in Brazilian Vehicle Production

Brazilian motor vehicle production is on a roll, with both output and export figures reportedly at all time highs in May 2006, according to the Brazilian Motor Vehicle Manufacturing Association, Antavea. The exact figures have not yet been published but they must be higher than April’s 182,481 passenger car registrations to break the record production figures. In 2005 the Brazilian vehicle manufacturing industry produced 2,009,494 cars, 365,648 light commercial vehicles 153,158 commercial trucks and buses.

Truck Registrations up 10 per cent

Figures published last week by the SMMT show truck registrations grew 9.6 per cent for the rolling year, despite the massive distortion caused by the introduction of digital tachographs. If vans and other light commercial vehicles are included in the picture, the rolling year total drops, down 1.4 per cent to 390,202 units, but the total for the month of May is up 1.4 per cent to 31,293.

Best-ever Month for UK Mini Sales

BMW achieved strong vehicle sales in the UK during the month of March. With 21,605 vehicles registered during the month, BMW has recorded an increase of 24 per cent on this time last year and an overall rise in volume of 16 per cent year to date. One of the key influencing factors in BMW’s success has been the introduction of the new 3 Series Saloon and Touring models. Overall 3 Series has shown an increase of 63 per cent when compared to this time last year. Other strong performers in the BMW range are the 7 Series, 5 Series and 1 Series models, all of which have shown a sharp increase in registrations when compared year on year.

Good Start to Year for European Vehicle Manufacturers

Figures for European vehicle production rose 8.6 per cent in January. Western Europe posted growth of 1.9 per cent, but production in Central Europe rose by a remarkable 42.4 per cent. There were contrasting performances during the month, with Fiat production up 31 per cent (from a low base) due mainly to the launch of the new Punto. VW production rose 8.6 per cent on the back of Audi, Passat and Golf Plus models. Mercedes output was flat, but Smart production fell 34 per cent. PSA production rose nearly five per cent, but Renault fell 6.4 per cent, despite strong sales of the new Clio.

2005 UK Car Registrations Down 5 per cent

2005 saw the UK car market record the sharpest decline amongst the EU15 countries. While registrations were strong in December (158.866 units against 144,353 in December 2004), the 8.7 per cent increase disguised what was an undoubtedly tough year.

Germany, Europe’s largest car market, showed the opposite trend, recording an 8.8 per cent dip in December but 1.6 per cent growth over the year. 3,319, 825 new cars were registered in Germany in 2005. France showed the strongest growth in Europe with annual registrations increasing 2.7 per cent to 2,067,818 in 2005, despite slowing 1.4 per cent in December.

Truck Sales on Target

Commercial vehicle registrations are “on track,” according to SMMT statistics that have recorded 394,738 registrations for the rolling year to September. Last month’s figures were slightly down at 0.6 per cent, but the year to date is up by 1.6 per cent.

Successful Start For Goodyear TyreOnlineService

Goodyear Dunlop has reported that a recent direct marketing campaign is succeeded in increasing tyre purchases through the company’s TyreOnlineService system.

TyreOnlineService was launched as a pilot scheme in the UK in May 2004, but became available of wider scale this year. The service provides customers with an online solution to purchasing their Goodyear, Dunlop, Fulda and Sava tyres. Since the launch its popularity has risen with many customers now reliant on the system to place their orders on a day-to-day basis, says Goodyear Dunlop.
